W¤hrend einer Gesch¤ftsreise wurde er im Juni 1859 in der N¤he der italienischen Stadt Solferino Zeuge der erschreckenden Zust¤nde nach einer Schlacht zwischen den verb¼ndeten Truppen Piemont-Sardiniens und Frankreichs sowie der Armee –sterreichs. œber seine Erlebnisse schrieb er ein Buch mit dem Titel „Eine Erinnerung an Solferino“, das er 1862 auf eigene Kosten ver¶ffentlichte und in Europa verteilte. In der Folge kam es ein Jahr sp¤ter in Genf zur Gr¼ndung des Internationalen Komitees der Hilfsgesellschaften f¼r die Verwundetenpflege , das seit 1876 den Namen Internationales Komitee vom Roten Kreuz (IKRK) tr¤gt. Die 1864 beschlossene Genfer Konvention geht wesentlich auf Vorschl¤ge aus Dunants Buch zur¼ck. Dunant, der 1901 zusammen mit Fr©d©ric Passy den ersten Friedensnobelpreis bekam, gilt damit als Begr¼nder der Internationalen Rotkreuz- und Rothalbmond-Bewegung.
