Jean Henri Dunant's life (May 8, 1828-October 30, 1910) is a study in contrasts. He was born into a wealthy home but died in a hospice; in middle age he juxtaposed great fame with total obscurity, and success in business with bankruptcy; in old age he was virtually exiled from the Genevan society of which he had once been an ornament and died in a lonely room, leaving a bitter testament. His passionate humanitarianism was the one constant in his life, and the Red Cross his living monument.
The Geneva household into which Henri Dunant was born was religious, humanitarian, and civic-minded. In the first part of his life Dunant engaged quite seriously in religious activities and for a while in full-time work as a representative of the Young Men's Christian Association, traveling in France, Belgium, and Holland. When he was twenty-six, Dunant entered the business world as a representative of the Compagnie genevoise des Colonies de Sétif in North Africa and Sicily. In 1858 he published his first book, Notice sur la Régence de Tunis [An Account of the Regency in Tunis], made up for the most part of travel observations but containing a remarkable chapter, a long one, which he published separately in 1863, entitled L'Esclavage chez les musulmans et aux Etats-Unis d'Amérique [Slavery among the Mohammedans and in the United States of America].

Dunant, Jean Henri
Swiss Philanthropist and Pacifist Scion of a bourgeois Geneva family, Jean Henri Dunant was horrified by the carnage of nearly forty thousand casualties he witnessed on the battlefield at Solferino, Italy, in 1859. He organized emergency care for wounded French and Austrian troops, to whom he became known as "the man in white." In a memoir published in 1862, he proposed the organization of relief societies in time of peace to care for the wounded in wartime, which led in 1864 to the foundation of the Red Cross and the drafting of the first international code of rules for war, the Geneva Convention. Neglecting his affairs, this tireless pacifist went bankrupt in 1867 campaigning against slavery, against "new and frightful weapons of destruction," and in favor of disarmament, international arbitration, humane treatment for prisoners of war, and the purchase of land in Palestine for the resettlement of Jews—well before the rise of the Zionist movement. Dunant shared the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901 with Frédéric Passy, another Swiss. The International Red Cross, staffed by Swiss and functioning as a trusted go-between during armed conflicts, nevertheless engenders a certain amount of cynicism in Switzerland, where, in an allusion to one of the nation's principal arms exporters, it is sometimes wryly referred to as "the Oerlikon-Bürhle after-sales service."

An eyewitness of the Battle of Solferino (June 24, 1859), which resulted in nearly 40,000 casualties, Dunant organized emergency aid services for the Austrian and French wounded. In (1862), he proposed the formation in all countries of voluntary relief societies for the prevention and alleviation of suffering in war and peacetime, without distinction of race or creed; he also proposed an international agreement covering the war wounded. In 1864, the year he founded the Red Cross, the first national societies and the first Geneva Convention came into being. Having gone bankrupt because he neglected his business affairs, Dunant left Geneva in 1867 and spent most of the rest of his life in poverty and obscurity. He continued to promote interest in the treatment of prisoners of war, the abolition of slavery, international arbitration, disarmament, and the establishment of a Jewish homeland. After he was "rediscovered" by a journalist at Heiden, Switz., in 1895, Dunant received many honours and annuities, including the first Nobel Prize for Peace.

Jean-Henri Dunant and the Red Cross
The Red Cross is an admirable global organization founded by an admirable individual, Jean-Henri Dunant, whose life John Gehl summarizes here: "Swiss humanitarian Jean-Henri Dunant (1828-1910) founded the Red Cross in 1864, and in 1901 shared the first Nobel Prize for Peace in recognition of his Red Cross work, and for his efforts on behalf of disarmament and international arbitration. At age twenty-six, he entered the business world as a representative of the Compagnie Genevoise des Colonies de Setif in North Africa and Sicily. In 1858 he published his first book, An Account of the Regency in Tunis, which contained his travel observations and a remarkable chapter (later published separately) on slavery among the Mohammedans and in the United States of America. Having personally witnessed the 1859 Battle of Solferino, which resulted in nearly 40,000 casualties, he was so disturbed by the lack of care for the wounded that he acted to organize emergency aid services for the Austrian and French wounded. In 1862 Dunant published "
