- The qualities of sulpha had been recognized in 1908 by an Austrian student, who had discovered the anti-bacterial qualities in the substance during his medical studies. More reports of the anti-bacterial qualities appeared in USA shortly after the First World War. However the breakthrough with sulpha had to be waited till the year of 1935. - Gerhard Domagk served in the imperial German army during the First World War, but was wounded in December 1914. As Domagk had studied medicine before the war, he was sent to the medical service despite of his injuries. With the medical service, he served in for example in the Russian cholera hospitals and this experience affected strongly to his later interest of working with the anti-bacterial substances. He was strongly touched by the helplessness of the doctors and medics to prevent infectious disease spreading in the hospital. Even when the surgical operations would have been possible to save the patient, the patient usually died after the operation to different bacterial infections. After the war Domagk returned back to the medical Faculty. - Domagk however ceased his studies and went to do research work into the pharmaceutical company Bayer, which at that time was part of the IG Farben Trust. He and his team managed in 1932 to isolate a substance from the sulpha amides, which protected rabbits and mice from staphylococcus infections. Domagk named the substance as Prontosil Rubrum. Despite the fact that the substance was effective with the animals, Domagk remained a very sceptical its use with the humans. This time however the course of pharmaceutical development was changed in accident. Domagk’s daughter got seriously sick from the staphylococcus and in a desperate attempt to save her life, Domagk gave Prontosil to his own daughter and this way saved her life as she recovered completely from the disease.

About the Treatment of Cuts, Injuries, Wounds and Abscesses in Dogs, Cats, and Other Pets
General Introduction and Comments
Wounds and Abscesses

Open wounds are much more obvious, of course, but are listed along with abscesses since they are often related and the treatment is similar.
(Of course, other vets may do things differently)
A good Examination:
Based on what we find on exam, we decide whether the wound or abscess is minor and likely to heal with just cleaning and antibiotics or is major and would be better treated with surgical draining, flushing, debridement, and repair in addition to antibiotics.
Here's What We're Likely to Do:
For minor wounds unlikely to need surgery but bad enough that they probably won't heal on their own:

injection of antibiotics (usually I use gentocin mixed with high dose, long acting Penicillin ) combined with short acting steroid for inflammation and to reduce fever. Be prepared to return for more aggressive treatment and/or more potent antibiotics if not improving quickly. For Wounds and Abscess' bad enough that we should clean out the infected tissue under anesthesia: In cats, the problem of bacterial growth is especially bad because cat skin heals too quickly over a puncture...trapping the bacteria under the skin so that instead of draining out of the body...it reeks local destruction, tissue tunneling (fistulous tracts), endotoxin formation which is absorbed into the blood stream, and impressive abscessation.

ANTIBACTERIAL In its Dec. 28, 1936, issue, Time magazine reported that Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of the president, had missed the family Thanksgiving dinner. Instead of the dinner, she went to Boston, where son, Franklin Jr., was suffering from sinus trouble. Not only did the 22-year-old Roosevelt have sinus trouble, he also had septic sore throat, and there was a possibility of Streptococcus haemolyticus , the magazine reported, which once in the bloodstream might destroy his red cells. When Roosevelt's throat swelled and became raw and he developed a high fever, George Loring Tobey Jr., a Boston ear, nose, and throat specialist, according to the magazine, gave him hypodermic injections of what was then a little-known drug called Prontosil and oral doses of a modification called Protolyn. The story has, of course, a happy ending with Roosevelt rallying quickly. This episode and the resultant publicity in Time and many other magazines and newspapers went far in making the "notable new drug"Prontosiland, subsequently, other sulfonamides, leading antibacterials.

http://www.bioanalytical.com/info/calendar/2000/intro.html
Xenobiotic Metabolism Woven among the origins of drug metabolism research are the threads of some fascinating tales. Imagine what it was like to be the first to conceive of a metabolic pathway and to prove it using your own body as part of the experimental method? Consumption of benzoic acid, cinnamic acid, and phenol by researchers (and their dogs) in the 19th century precipitated more than the interesting crystals they found in their urine. It lead to an entirely new concept: the fact that chemical transformations could actually occur in the body. The mysticism of the early 1800’s, which ascribed bodily processes to a “vital flame” beyond human comprehension, began to crumble in the light of the new sciences such as organic chemistry and early metabolic studies. Much of the early research evolved from a general interest in disease, and potential therapies involving chemical substances. It was the scourge of streptococcus that stimulated the hiring of physician Gerhard Domagk by I.G. Farbenindustrie in 1927. There was no cure for most other bacterial infections at that time. What we shrug off as “strep throat” today, was a child killer then. Domagk had served in hospitals during World War I, while still a young medical student, and was appalled at the lack of options available for the treatment of cholera, typhus and other bacterial diseases. Consider the story of one six year old child in 1935, afflicted with a raging streptococcal infection induced by an innocent pin prick to the finger. The infection spread to the lymph nodes under her arm. Lancing and draining the pus fourteen times did not help and the only remaining alternative was to amputate the arm. Even such a drastic measure would probably not save her life.

These dyes were not successful in curing the human form of the disease, Success It is now known that the mode of action of sulphanilamide and the sulphonamide class lies in interfering with bacterial synthesis of folic acid, by competing with 4-aminobenzoic acid. This is due to the similar size and shape of the molecules. Since humans absorb folic acid from a normal diet, the sulphonamides are not toxic to us.
