Doherty, Peter C. My childhood was spent on the outskirts of the sub-tropical city of Brisbane. I have a younger brother, Ian, and we grew up as part of a traditional, extended family that was very much influenced by the values of our two grandmothers. The one was a devout Methodist, the other a lapsed Quaker who was born in England and embraced the informal Australian life style with great enthusiasm. My parents (Linda and Eric) were first and second generation Australians, the various elements of the family coming from County Louth (in the 1840's), Lancashire and Essex. Eric Doherty, a clever and entertaining man, trained initially as a telephone mechanic and was an administrator involved in the planning of telephone services. His mother had been left in straitened financial circumstances when my grandfather succumbed to pneumonia during the 1919 influenza epidemic. My father communicated his frustration at not having received an adequate formal education and, with his strong encouragement, the desire to learn and understand became the major focus of my life. Linda Byford was a piano teacher who, with her two brothers, spent much of her youth on the tennis court. After marriage she cared for her family, played Chopin Debussy , and Beethoven and grew roses. She gave me an appreciation, and emotional need for, classical music, but did not pass on the genes for tennis. The Byfords were devastated by the death of the eldest son, who was captured at the fall of Singapore and lost in a Japanese transport torpedoed by an American submarine. I remember my other Byford uncle shivering with recurrent malaria that he contracted during the fighting in New Guinea. I share Alfred Nobel's conviction that war is the greatest of all human disasters. Infectious disease runs a good second.

Dr Peter C. Doherty, AC, FAA, FRS Dr. Peter Doherty is an Australian-born immunologist who has worked for 17 years in the United States. Since 1988 he has been Chairman of the Department of Immunology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, and a Professor in the University of Tennessee Medical School. He and his long term Swiss colleague, Rolf Zinkernagel, won the 1996 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their work on immunity to viruses. This was preceded by the 1995 Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research. He was the 1997 Australian of the Year. He has been on a member of numerous review committees, scientific advisory boards in Australia, Britain and the USA, and has also given long-term service to the International Laboratory for Research on Animal Diseases, Nairobi, Kenya. Having spent some time in Africa and South East Asia, he is very committed to the idea that controlling the major infectious diseases (such as AIDS and malaria) by vaccination would contribute enormously to sustainable development, social stability and world peace.

NOBEL LAUREATE IN IMMUNOLOGY TO KICK OFF VMRCVM'S NEW HORIZONS SPEAKER SERIES OCTOBER 2 BLACKSBURG, Sept. 26, 19971996 Nobel Laureate Dr. Peter C. Doherty will present an address entitled "Cell-Mediated Immunity in Virus Infections" at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine on Thursday, October 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the College Center. Doherty holds the Michael F. Tamer Chair of Biomedical Research and serves as chairman of the Department of Immunology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He is also professor of pediatrics and pathology at the University of Tennessee. His pioneering work in cellular immunology has provided important insights regarding T-Cell initiation of the body's immune response, work that has extraordinary implications for autoimmune diseases, organ transplantation, graft rejection and vaccine design. Doherty's lecture kicks off the VMRCVM's six-week " New Horizons in Veterinary Medicine Speaker Series ," which has been produced in honor of Virginia Tech's 125th Anniversary Celebration "Our institution is nationally recognized for academic programs which prepare veterinarians for work in "non-traditional" areas of veterinary medicine," said Eyre. "Many of these speakers will showcase some of these emerging ways in which this profession is serving society, and we are delighted they have agreed to be a part of the series."

    Peter C. Doherty, Ph.D.
Dr. Peter Doherty trained originally as a veterinarian and has spent the majority of his career as a research immunologist working on the nature of the host response to pathogenic viruses. With Rolf Zinkernagel, Dr. Doherty received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1996 for the discovery of how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells. This work, one of the most important discoveries of the past 30 years, has laid a foundation for an understanding of general mechanisms used by the cellular immune system to recognize both foreign microorganisms and self molecules. This discovery is highly relevant to clinical medicine, relating both to efforts to strengthen the immune response against invading microorganisms and certain forms of cancer, and to efforts to diminish the effects of autoimmune reactions in inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatic conditions, multiple sclerosis and diabetes. In addition to the Nobel Prize, Dr. Doherty has been awarded the Paul Ehrlich Prize, the Gairdner Foundation International Award, and the Albert Lasker Medical Research Award. He is chairman of immunology at St. Jude Children's Hospital and is a professor in the Department of Pathology at the University of Tennessee. He served as Associate Professor/Professor at the Wistar Institute (1975-1982), and was a member of Penn's Department of Pathology and the Immunology Graduate Group. He has authored or collaborated on more than 350 research papers and book chapters and has received honorary degrees from ten institutions.

A warm welcome to my web site which I have designed as a touchstone for past, present and future students, and for like-minded colleagues engaged in transformative development of professionals in Education and other fields. This web site provides multiple perspectives on possibilities for creating transformative learning communities that are experienced as meaningful and inspiring, inclusive and connected, empowering and ethically sound. For me, transformative education enables each learner to flourish, as a creative and autonomous individual and as an interdependent participant of various communities, from family networks to cultural groups to human ity writ large. I share with Parker Palmer a conception of inward transformation in which professional educators expand our traditional concern with the what and how of teaching to embrace the deeper questions of 'Why are we teaching?' and 'Who is the self who teaches?'. Only then can we hope to engage our students in similar transformative journeys. At the heart of this web site: Other important links:
