    Abstract
Most successful vaccines do not establish sterilizing immunity, but function to prevent the development of disease by limiting the blood-bourne distribution of either the pathogen or a microbial toxin to the site of potential pathology. The fact that infectious agents often replicate to a limited extent in vaccinated individuals constitutes a major challenge for defeating (for example) the human immunodeficiency viruses that have the capacity to subvert the immune response. Much can be done from the public health aspect to limit the impact of many infectious diseases, but poverty, conflict with environmental needs and established cultural practices and beliefs can create major difficulties. Infectious diseases do not recognize national boundaries and must be dealt with as a collective, international responsibility.
    Introduction
By the mid 1960’s some immunologists were confidently stating that the era of infectious disease was effectively over. Vaccines and antibiotics were dealing effectively with many of the pathogenic viruses and bacteria, at least those that were prevalent in the advanced countries. The impact of diseases like malaria could be limited by public health measures such as mosquito control and, with some notable exceptions (The Rockefeller Foundation), comparatively little attention was given to the high childhood mortality rates in the developing world. Much of this was blamed in a generic way on "malnutrition", which was often a contributing factor but tended to obscure other underlying problems.

and Ernest Hemingway simultaneously. I decided to be the man of action rather than the philosopher, and resolved to graduate in veterinary science and pursue a research career. At this stage I was just 17 years old, and would probably have made a very different decision if I had been more mature.
When I graduated, I was contracted (under the terms of a "bonded" scholarship) to work for several years in the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Stock. I expressed enthusiasm for laboratory-based research, so the Department immediately sent me to the country as a rural veterinary officer. I spent some months driving large distances to post-mortem cattle and pigs that had died of unknown causes, and to survey cattle for various venereal diseases. This resulted in the diagnosis of Trichomoniasis in an area where it was thought that complete eradication had been achieved. Realizing that I was a danger to their regulatory effort, the Department quickly brought me back to the state veterinary laboratory, the Animal Research Institute (ARI), Yeerongpilly. My task was to conduct a large-scale, externally-funded experiment on the epidemiology of bovine leptospirosis. This project involved injecting several cows with Leptospira pomona

    (b. Oct. 15, 1940, Australia), Australian immunologist and pathologist who, with Rolf Zinkernagel of Switzerland, received the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1996 for their discovery of how the body's immune system distinguishes virus-infected cells from normal cells. After teaching at the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, Pa. (1975-82), Doherty headed the department of pathology at the Curtin School in Canberra (1982-88) and became chairman of the department of immunology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., in 1988.
