One consequence of his theory was the prediction of negative energy states for the electron, implying the existence of an antiparticle to the electron; this antiparticle, the positron, was discovered in 1932 by C. D. Anderson. Dirac's equation for the motion of a particle is a relativistic modification of the SchrOdinger wave equation, the basic equation of quantum mechanics. For their work Dirac and Erwin SchrOdinger shared the 1933 Nobel Prize in Physics. Dirac also received the Copley Medal of the Royal Society in 1952 for this and other contributions to the quantum theory, including his formulation (with Enrico Fermi) of the Fermi-Dirac statistics and his work on the quantum theory of electromagnetic radiation. He wrote The Principles of Quantum Mechanics (1930, 4th ed. 1958).

His father was a Swiss-born teacher of French, his mother a librarian. Dirac's first degree, obtained at the Merchant Venturer's Technical College, was in electrical engineering, but he had no real interest in the subject and after graduating spent two years studying mathematics at the University of Bristol. In 1923 he left Bristol for Cambridge where he remained for most of his working life.

Dirac's achievements in Cambridge were prodigious. In 1925, while working for his doctorate, he became one of the founders of quantum mechanics when he produced an elegant extension of Heisenberg's work. A little over a year later he presented a very general formulation of quantum mechanics that has remained the basis of the subject ever since. During the next year he essentially founded quantum electrodynamics. In 1928 Dirac took an important step towards bringing quantum physics into conformity with Einstein's

Dirac, Paul Adrien Maurice (1902-1984)
A British theoretical physicist who played a major role in the development of quantum mechanics and predicted the existence of antiparticles . He made his first great breakthrough at Cambridge University in 1928, when he found a wave equation for the electron proton , were known, and there was no suspicion that others might be waiting in the wings. The prediction was fulfilled four years later when the positron , as it is now called, was first seen. A central theme of Dirac's work was his belief that mathematical rightness and beauty go hand in hand. When a journalist once asked him to explain the concept of mathematical beauty, Dirac asked the journalist "Do you know mathematics?," and when the journalist replied "No," Dirac said, "Then you can't understand the concept of mathematical beauty." A shy, retiring person, Dirac is not as famous as his achievements warrant.

Biography
Paul Dirac was born in the English city of Bristol . His father, Charles Dirac, was an immigrant from the Valais Canton in Switzerland who taught French for a living. His mother was originally from Cornwall and the daughter of a mariner. Paul had an elder brother and an younger sister. His early family life appears to have been unhappy on account of his father's unusually strict and authoritarian nature, but he never publicly expressed his feelings on the subject. He was educated first at Bishop Primary School and later at Merchant Venturers Technical College. The latter was an institution, attached to the University of Bristol , that emphasized scientific subjects and modern languages (an unusual arrangement at a time when secondary education in Britain was still dedicated largely to the classics , and something for which Dirac would later express gratitude).

Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac Click here for full size picture (b. Aug. 8, 1902, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Eng.d. Oct. 20, 1984, Tallahassee, Fla., U.S.), English theoretical physicist known for his work in quantum mechanics and for his theory of the spinning electron. In 1933 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with the Austrian physicist Dirac's mathematical ability showed itself at an early age. At the school he attended in Bristol he was given rather advanced books on mathematics to study independently. His father, a Swiss by birth who was the French master at the same school, encouraged his son to develop his mathematical ability. He wished him also to become fluent in French, to the extent that, according to the son's report, the elder Dirac refused to speak to him unless he was addressed in the French language. This may have fostered Dirac's pronounced tendency to speak seldom and choose his words with utmost care. He avoided company, preferring to work alone. His chief pastime was solitary walks. Toward the practical end of earning a living, Dirac studied engineering at the University of Bristol. The use of approximations that he learned in this study had a strong influence on his later work; it strengthened his confidence in the intuitive approach to problem solving. He came to believe that a theory expressing fundamental laws of nature could be constructed solely on the basis of approximations, guided by intuition rather than exact knowledge of the actualities. He declared that the actual phenomena were too complex ever to be pinned down in a precise way; a physicist must be satisfied to work only with approximate knowledge of reality.

Paul Dirac
The English physicist Paul Adrien Maurice Dirac, b. Aug. 8, 1902, d. Oct. 22, 1984, made significant contributions to the development of quantum mechanics. In September 1925 he read an account of a lecture on quantum mechanics by the German physicist Werner Heisenberg, and quickly devised a number of new mathematical formulations of quantum mechanics that have since proved to be of great importance. In his first publication, in November 1925, Dirac elaborated a method for deriving the equation of motion from quantum mechanics, and a few months later he clearly defined a number of concepts that were to play a major role in the field. Dirac was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge from 1932 to 1969 and professor of physics at Florida State University, from 1971 until his death. In 1933 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics with Erwin Schrodinger.

Dirac, Paul Adrien Maurice (1902-1984)
English physicist whose calculations predicted that particles should exist with negative energies. This led him to suggest that the Electron had an " Antiparticle ". This Antielectron was discovered subsequently by Carl Anderson in 1932, and came to be called the Positron . Dirac also developed a "spinor" version of the , known as the Dirac Equation , which is relativistically correct. For his work on antiparticles and wave mechanics, he received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1933.
