Diels, Otto Paul Hermann
German chemist. In 1950 he and his former assistant, Kurt Alder , were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for their research into the synthesis of organic chemical compounds.
In 1927 Diels dehydrogenated cholesterol to produce 'Diels hydrocarbon' (C18H16), an aromatic hydrocarbon closely related to the skeletal structure of all steroids, of which cholesterol is one. In 1935 he synthesized it. This work proved to be a turning point in the understanding of the chemistry of cholesterol and other steroids.
Diels was born in Hamburg and studied at Berlin. He was director of the Chemical Institute at the Christian Albrecht University in Kiel 1916-48.
Working with his assistant Alder, Diels developed the diene synthesis, which first achieved success in 1928, when they combined cyclopentadiene with maleic anhydride (cis-butenedioic anhydride) to form a complex derivative of phthalic anhydride. Generally, conjugated dienes (compounds with two double bonds separated by a single bond) react with dienophiles (compounds with one double bond activated by a neighbouring substituent such as a carbonyl or carboxyl group) to form a six-membered ring.

Name: Otto Paul Hermann Diels Birth Date: January 23, 1876 Death Date: March 7, 1954 Place of Birth: Hamburg, Germany Place of Death: Kiel, Germany Nationality: German Gender: Male Occupations: chemist, professor Otto Paul Hermann Diels Main Biography The German organic chemist Otto Paul Hermann Diels (1876-1954) discovered a technique of atomic combination which led to the synthesis of an important group of organic compounds. Hermann Diels was born in Hamburg on Jan. 23, 1876. After studying chemistry at the University of Berlin he was awarded a doctoral degree in 1899. In that year he joined the faculty as assistant professor and became associate professor in 1914. He became professor of chemistry at the University of Kiel in 1916 and held this position until his retirement in 1948. In his early work at Berlin, Diels discovered carbon suboxide (1906) and investigated its properties. The compound was important because of its high degree of reactivity and because its chemical structure provided important information as to the composition of other oxides of the carbon atom. However, Diels's most important work was done at Kiel, where he was assisted by Kurt Alder. Together they were able to work out the technique of a new atomic combination.

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Otto Diels The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1950 Otto Paul Hermann Diels was born in Hamburg, Germany, on January 23, 1876. His earliest research was in the field of inorganic chemistry, where he was the discoverer of an oxide of carbon having some unusual properties-carbon sub oxide. His subsequent work was in the domain of organic chemistry. He was responsible for introducing the use of selenium as a specific reagent for the dehydrogenation of hydro aromatic compounds (1927). This proved to be a very useful tool in elucidating chemical structures in the complicated steroid series, where his name is associated with the hydrocarbon 3'-methyl-1, 2-cyclopentenophenanthrene. Diels obtained this skeletal steroid structure by dehydrogenating cholesterol, and other members of the series, with selenium. His best known work was done in collaboration with Kurt Alder on the chemical reaction which bears their joint names (1928). This, sometimes known also as the diene synthesis, consists in the reaction of a diene with a second component which has carbonyl or carboxyl groups adjoining an ethylenic bond, to give unsaturated cyclic compounds. Diels married, in 1909, Paula Geyer. They had three sons and two daughters.
