Italian writer who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1926. Deledda spent her childhood in a small isolated village, where the people spoke Logudorese, a dialect closely related to Latin. She was a member of the 'verismo', a 19th- century Italian literary movement related to naturalism. Her stories are usually set in Sardinia, where the ancient ways conflict with modern, and the characters are forced to work out solutions to their moral issues. Deledda was born in the Sardinian village of Nuoro, where her father served as a mayor. Until the age of ten, Deledda attended the local elementary school, which was her only formal education, before she was privately tutored in French and Italian. Deledda wasted no time in getting down to a career as a writer. At the age of 8 she began to write poems, and published her first short story at the age of seventeen in a women's magazine. These early gentle, emotional works reflected the influence of folklore. Her first novel, FIOR DI SAREGNA, appeared in 1892. In was followed by ANIME ONESTE in 1895.

Andrea Fronteddu, chef and owner, opened this place in 1972 with one burning ambition: satisfy the most refined tastes. He thus is constantly looking for exclusive products to elaborate artfully presenting unforgettable dishes. His menu includes classical Sardinian dishes like grilled goat, wholemeal "Frattau" paper thin bread, and a selection of fish dishes like tuna eggs and "carasau" bread and Alghero lobster. His cheese plateau is also very interesting with many local types: seasoned Pecorino, Sassari goat cheese, and the absolute must is grilled fresh Pecorino with bitter honey. His desserts include the excellent typical Sardinian Virgin cake and "cocciuleddi galluresi". The cellar has a fine selection of French and Italian wines, with particular attention to Sardinian labels.

GRAZIA DELEDDA was born in 1871 in Nuoro, Sardinia. She had a limited formal education, but was an avid reader. She published her first story in 1886 when she was fifteen, in a newspaper in Nuoro. Her stories continued to be published in one of the many fashion magazines of the late nineteenth century, Ultima Moda. Although the dismay of her family and friends distressed her, it also strengthened her resolve to succeed. In 1899 she left Nuoro and went to Cagliari, where she met and married Palmiro Madesani. A year later they moved to Rome, where Deledda lived a quiet life with her husband and two sons until her death in 1936, at sixty-five. Deledda wrote thirty-three novels and many books of short stories, almost all of them set in Sardinia. Among her better-known novels are Elias Portolu, Canne al vento (published by Italica Press in 1998 as Reeds in the Wind), La madre, Annalena Bilsini, and Cosima (Italica Press, 1988), her posthumous autobiographical novel. Grazia Deledda became, in 1926, the first Italian woman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.

    Grazia Deledda’s Eternal Adolescents
Janice M. Kozma About FDU Press New Releases Book Reviews Submission Guidelines BOOK REVIEW
A tiny (five-foot) woman, Grazia Deledda was the only girl in a family that included two brothers. She was a self-trained writer, an avid reader. Her only formal education consisted of three years of elementary school. Her first published work, which appeared when she was sixteen, aroused tremendous criticism of the kind that was to haunt her most of her life. In the closed society of Sardinia, women were not supposed to be writers and certainly were not supposed to write about their own people, showing their weaknesses and their flaws. Even the great Pirandello joined the critics who made fun of Deledda. One of his stories is a thinly-veiled sarcastic assessment of her life and work; and on occasion he was said to have referred to her husband as “Signor Deledda.” Pirandello may also have been somewhat annoyed (to put it mildly) that this uneducated woman should have received the Nobel Prize for Literature – and, to make matters worse, should have received it before Pirandello himself won the same coveted award in 1934.
