Synopsis
Delbruck's interest in biology is usually dated to his 1930s sessions in Bohr's Copenhagen lab. Bohr had suggested that his "complementarity" model (related to wave/particle duality) might have biological analogues, and Delbruck thought perhaps new laws of physics might come out of study along these lines. Specifically, in August, 1932 Bohr gave a lecture on "Light and life" at an international congress of light therapists. In his talk Bohr suggested that life processes are complementary to the laws of chemistry and physics. This is said to have sparked Delbruck's interest in biology and led him away from physics. In early 1937 Delbruck wrote to T.H. Morgan

Synopsis The phage group was an informal group of scientists at different universities who worked together and separately on bacterial viruses, or phage. The group's spiritual leader was Max Delbruck , a charismatic and brilliant German physicist-turned-biologist. The phage group's origins lie in the December, 1941 meeting of the American Physical Society, in Philadelphia. Delbruck, then at Vanderbilt University, liked to keep up with theoretical physics, though he no longer practiced. In Philadelphia he met Salvador Luria, an Italian national who was not a physicist, but was interested in physics. The two began talking about phage and went up to Luria's lab at the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. They did a "48 hour bout of experiments" and cemented nearly a decade of collaboration. Delbruck planned to go to Cold Spring Harbor in the summer, to attend the annual Symposium and to stay on to do experiments for the rest of the summer. He invited Luria to come, Luria accepted, and the phage group was born.
The Mutual Exclusion Principle
That first summer Delbruck and Luria demonstrated the "mutual exclusion principle." They plated out bacteria with two different strains of phage, alpha and gamma. Each type of phage has a characteristic and highly regular time course; nearly to the minute, it will cause the bacteria to burst, or lyse, at a fixed time after infection. The alpha phage had a much faster lyse time than the gamma. When allowed to "compete" for the bacteria, however, the slower gamma phage always won. This showed that only one type of phage could infect a given bacterium, to the exclusion of the other. Delbruck and Luria likened this to the fertilization membrane an ovum forms after it is penetrated by a single sperm.

Olby is a graduate of University College London and Oxford. Best known for his work on the history of genetics, especially the Bateson school, and for his study of the early history of molecular biology, Olby is currently a Research Professor in the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh. He is the author of The Origins of Mendelism Charles Darwin The Path to the Double Helix (1994), and the Norton History of Biology . His current research is focused on the conceptual foundations of modern sensory neurophysiology and an intellectual biography of Francis Crick. The Olby Collection contains about 150 photocopies of correspondence and documents collected by Olby during research for The Path to the Double Helix . Among these is a copy of a manuscript by F. C. Crick and James D. Watson, "The Complementary Structure of Deoxyribonucleic Acid," prepared while Watson was at CalTech.
