happily switches from one subject to another. His significant contributions in many different domains (magnetism, supraconductivity, liquid crystals, polymers, etc.) brought him the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1991. Pierre-Gilles de Gennes pleads in favour of an education system that is more open to scientific practice. Label France: What do you think of the government measures aimed at promoting relations between researchers and industry? Pierre-Gilles de Gennes: Public authorities have become aware of the need to bring these two worlds together. Nowadays, people realise the significance of mixed laboratories that combine research bodies and businesses. These small structures, which are not too expensive for the two partners, play an extraordinary " seminal " role. Academics provide a breath of fresh air for industrial researchers, who are committed to observing professional secrets and are often confined to their laboratories. Academic researchers, for their part, are confronted with new problems that are fascinating at the fundamental level.

'Artificial muscle' is topic for Nobelist Pierre-Gilles de Gennes
By Roger Segelken Nobel Prize-winning physicist Pierre-Gilles de Gennes will speak on "Novel Schemes for Artificial Muscle" when he delivers a Gemant Lecture on Monday, May 5, at 3:30 p.m. in Schwartz Auditorium, Rockefeller Hall, at Cornell. The lecture, which is sponsored by the Department of Physics, is free and open to the public. The director of the College of Industrial Physics and Chemistry in Paris and professor of solid state physics at the University of Paris, de Gennes is best known for his studies of liquid crystals and polymers, an achievement for which he was honored with the 1991 Nobel Prize for physics. The speaker has visited Cornell before as a professor-at-large and as a Bethe Lecturer. Some of his special insights into the fractal nature of matter, as caused by thermal fluctuations, build on the work of Cornell chemists and physicists Benjamin Widom, Michael E. Fisher and Kenneth Wilson. And de Gennes found that much earlier work by Cornell chemist Paul Flory could be combined with new ideas about the fluctuations in the shape of polymers to reveal how polymer solutions unified collective and individual molecular properties. More recently, de Gennes' interest in "soft" condensed matter has extended to interfacial phenomena, such as wetting of surfaces by liquids, the mechanisms by which materials stick to each other and the soft materials of living matter.

Tribulations of inventors
BaZ Artikel vom 10. November 2004

Tribulations of Inventors We don’t know very well how to form inventors. To do that better, it is interesting to retrace the life of some inventors from the past. This shall be tried here. Starting with some very early ones like the Brothers Montgolfier or the creators of the zipper, the talk will also evoke the development of collaboration between industry and research in the 20th century and remind us of the menaces that float about that research in the 21st century. The speaker, P.-G. de Gennes, has worked for Philipps, General Electric, Exxon, and Rhone Poulenc, and also for various smaller start up companies. * Nobel Prize in Physics 1991 "for discovering that methods developed for studying order phenomena in simple systems can be generalized to more complex forms of matter, in particular to liquid crystals and polymers" Links Flyer as PDF-File  Biography  Personal webpage
