Mike's Notes: Charles Dawes happens to have one of the coolest preserved homes of any vice -president that I have found. In Evanston, Illinois, the house is open for tours and is in a beautiful neighborhood along Lake Michigan. His grave is also in a pretty nice cemetery. You forget you're in Chicago after wandering around here for a while. See Charles Dawes' grave at Find A Grave.com

Maternity clothes of the past are showcased in "Expectant Mothers and Tiny Children," a new exhibit at the Evanston Historical Society's Charles Gates Dawes House. During the 19th and the early 20th century, pregnancy was a socially delicate topic. A pregnant woman was "awaiting a visit from the stork." "Women of the upper-middle and wealthy classes stopped going out in public two or three months before the births of their children," said Janet C. Messmer, curator of costumes at the museum. A pregnant women would give birth right in her own bed, with her nervous husband pacing around the parlor downstairs. She did not appear again in public until at least a month after the birth. She stayed around the house in beautifully designed wrappers trimmed with lace and ribbons, recovering her strength. Only close family and friends visited.

Comments on the Dawes Arboretum, by Susan Tomlinson
The Dawes Arboretum was founded in June 1929 by Beman and Bertie Dawes, two individuals who loved land and trees. This nonprofit, private operating foundation now consists of 1,149 acres of plant collections, agriculture, silviculture, and natural areas. By definition, an arboretum is a place where trees, shrubs, and other woody plants are grown, exhibited and labeled for scientific and educational purposes (Dawes Information Pamphlet). After visiting the Dawes Arboretum one will see that it brings a much more inclusive feeling and definition to the word arboretum. Students examining some of the Conifers in the Arboretum's collection Dawes Arboretum was initiated to "Éencourage the planting of forest and ornamental trees and to demonstrate the value ofÉtrees for these purposes; for practical and scientific research in horticulture and agricultureÉin order to give pleasureÉ and educationÉ and to increase the general knowledge and love of trees and shrubsÉ."(Dawes Information Pamphlet). Luke Messinger, an employee of Dawes Arboretum, provided a wonderful synopsis on how the organization functions, its' purpose, its' history, and its' future. The original Dawes Family residence The history of Dawes is amazing. Beman Gates Dawes, husband of Bertie Dawes, formed The Pure Oil company in 1920, and used the assets from The Pure Oil Company to establish an endowment fund for perpetual operation of The Dawes Arboretum. Beman's brother, Brigadier General Charles Gates Dawes, also contributed to the endowment. Charles was Vice President of The United States, 1925 to 1929, and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1925 (Dawes Information Pamphlet). Inclusive in the research of the history department, are the past design, or non-design techniques of the gardens at the arboretum. Past designs include the straight orchard rows, popular in 1950's, and groups of plants from the same families in certain sections of the arboretum. Stepping into the future, the arboretum is constantly building on their world wide collection of plant material.

The History of 14 Princes Gate
The Building The Royal College of General Practitioners is now situated at 14 and 15 Prince’s Gate, facing Hyde Park on Kensington Road, on the end of an elegant Victorian row which also includes the Iranian, Tunisian, Moroccan and Ethiopian embassies. The College moved into No. 14, which had been converted into one house from 13 and 14 in 1905 by the owner of No. 13, JP Morgan (senior), in January 1963 and into 15 in 1976. The rear overlooks Ennismore Gardens, one of the biggest private gardens in London. Prince’s Gate originally constituted two terraces either side of a fine mansion called Kingston House, the West terrace being completed in 1849. The buildings were designed by the 27 year old architect of Liverpool’s St George’s Hall, Harvey Lonsdale Elmes and built by the firm of John Elger and John Kelk, responsible for the building of the Albert Memorial. The name was given to the terraces as they faced the new gate, built a year before, into Hyde Park, known as the Prince of Wales’ Gate after the future King, Edward VII.

I can't find anyone to claim Senator Henry Dawes, of Dawes Act fame (or infamy, according to my Cherokee friend)... would like to hear HIS side of the story some day. Do you know anything about Senator Henry? If you haven't seen it, Arlo Stray Calf Dawes writes a poignant story of how a Cherokee family got the name Dawes at http://www.colorpro.com/wmdawes/native.html
And feel free to contribute to Charles G. Lore/Stories. One of your relatives told me of a connection between Bill Gates family and yours! I might put up a Charles G. His short life spanned much of the Great War and his exile provided him with a unique perspective on the War's earth-changing magnitude
