“We must not fear the consequences of truth, only the failure to tell it completely." Charles Dawes Charles Dawes, Calvin Coolidge’s Vice President, developed a life-long interest in banking and finance into a prominent political career. From his beginnings as a lawyer in Nebraska and a successful career in real estate and investment to his political and governmental career, Dawes left his mark on the nation. Dawes’s family also had prominent businessmen among its lineage. His father owned and managed a successful lumber company in Marietta, Ohio. An uncle was a prosperous banker. The experiences and influences of his family members shaped his life. In his autobiography Calvin Coolidge noted the importance of one’s ancestors by recalling the comments of a New England sage "reported to have said that the education of a child should begin several generations before it is born." Given the contributions of the Dawes family heritage to the American experience, these words definitely applied to Dawes’s life.

    About Dawes Middle School
    Charles Gates Dawes
Dawes Middle School was named after Charles Gates Dawes (1865-1951) Charles Dawes came to Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 21. He spent eight years in the Capital city as a practicing attorney. From Lincoln he moved to Evanston, Illinois, where he entered business.
During his tenure in Lincoln he became a close friend of John J. Pershing who was on the ROTC staff at the University of Nebraska. This acquaintanceship was to prove profitable in later years.
Due to his tremendous success in the business world he became influential in the fields of banking and finance. This achievement led to his first major position of public service, Comptroller of Currency under President McKinley in 1897. He held this post until 1902 when he founded the Central Trust Company of Illinois.
In 1917, Mr. Dawes joined the Army and was given a commission as Major in the engineers. He was rapidly promoted to serving as purchasing agent for the American Expeditionary Force in France under the direct command of General John J. Pershing. After the war, General Dawes served as the first Director of the Budget under President Harding in 1921.
And here is the rest of his life in a more summarized form:
1923 Authored the Dawes Plan for Reparations which brought about the economic stability of Europe following World War I.

Class of 1884 Few Americans have served the nation in more numerous and varied important capacities than did Charles Gates Dawes. Born in Marietta in 1865, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Marietta College in 1884. Dawes became Comptroller of Currency (1898) under President McKinley; General of the Corps of Engineers and Chairman of the Purchasing Board of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I; first United States Director of the Budget (1920) under President Harding; author of the Dawes Plan, the basis for Germany’s reparations payments and for which he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize of 1925; Vice President of the United States under President Coolidge (1925-29); Ambassador to Great Britain (1929-32) and first President of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (1932) under President Hoover. An extraordinarily able organizer and administrator, Dawes accumulated a personal fortune in utilities and banking, having founded the Central Trust Company of Illinois in 1902. He was a man of colorful characteristics, famous for his tart language, his underslung pipe, and his contempt for pomp. He authored several books and wrote the musical composition "Melody," which was popularized in the 1950s under the title, "It's All In the Game." Dawes was awarded an honorary Doctor of Civil Laws degree from Marietta College in 1919 and served on the Board of Trustees from 1896 until his death in 1951.

History Soon after World War II, the Chicago Park District began a major initiative to create new parks for the first time in many years. This Ten Year Plan identified 43 sites in neighborhoods with few recreational facilities and in undeveloped areas which were starting to boom. In 1948, the third year of the effort, the park district acquired 22 new park sites, including a 16-acre, L-shaped property in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood. Because of the flurry of new construction, the park district did not begin improving Dawes Park until 1954. By the early 1960s, the new park included a picnic grove, an athletic field, a children's playground, a running track, tennis courts, and a small fieldhouse. In the 1990s, the park district constructed a soft surface playground and undertook a major tree planting program there. The park's name honors Charles Gates Dawes (1865-1951) a lawyer, soldier diplomat, and United States Vice President who had important ties with Chicago. After attending the Cincinnati Law School and living briefly in Nebraska and Ohio, Dawes settled in Evanston, Illinois. He entered politics, assisting in William McKinley's presidential campaign. McKinley rewarded Dawes by appointing him as Comptroller of the Currency. During World War I, Dawes joined the army, working his way up to Brigadier General. He authored the Dawes Plan, a proposal for rebuilding Europe after the war, and was awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize. Between 1925 and 1929, Dawes served as Vice-President under Calvin Coolidge. In that capacity, he was instrumental in Chicago's successful bid to hold a second World's Fair, the Century of Progress, which opened in 1933. Dawes authored eight books on banking and government. His many philanthropic causes included a Chicago homeless shelter built in 1913.
