April 23, 1951, Evanston, Ill.), U.S. vice president, ambassador, and author of the " Dawes Plan " for managing Germany's reparations payments after World War I. In 1925 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace jointly with Sir Austen Chamberlain Educated at Marietta College and Cincinnati Law School, Dawes practiced law in Lincoln, Neb. (1887-94), and then moved to Evanston, which he made his permanent home. He was U.S. comptroller of the currency from 1897 to 1902, when he returned to private business and organized the Central Trust Company of Illinois. During World War I Dawes was head of supply procurement for the American Expeditionary Force in France. He resigned as brigadier general in 1919. In 1921 he was appointed the first U.S. director of the budget. In 1923, Dawes was appointed by the Allied Reparations Commission to plan a solution for the problem of Germany's inability to pay reparations for their presumed liability for World War I. Dawes presided over a committee of experts that submitted a plan (1924) providing for a reorganization of German finances with the assistance of loans from U.S. investors. This "Dawes Plan" saved Europe from economic collapse for a few years, but it proved to be only a partial solution for the dilemma of world economic disorganization. Dawes was vice president under Pres. Calvin Coolidge (1925-29), and from 1929 to 1932 he was U.S. ambassador to Great Britain. During the Depression he returned to the U.S. (1932) to direct the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. He resigned the same year and reentered the banking business.

Dawes, Charles Gates Charles Gates Dawes (August 27, 1865-April 23, 1951) pursued two careers during his lifetime, one in business and finance, the other in public service. He was at the height of his fame in both in 1926 when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 1925. He was the vice-president of the United States; he had achieved worldwide recognition for his report on German reparations in 1924; he had a secure reputation as a financier. By ancestry he was destined for a life of such duality. His father had distinguished himself in the Civil War, achieving the rank of brevet brigadier general; an uncle had given his life. Four generations earlier, William Dawes had ridden with Paul Revere on April 18, 1775, to warn the Massachusetts colonists of the British advance which signalized the opening of the American Revolution; and seven generations earlier in 1628 the first William Dawes had been among the Puritans who came to America. Financial acumen was just as natural a heritage as active patriotism. Dawes's father owned and managed a lumber company in Marietta, Ohio; an uncle was a prosperous banker.
Since Charles Dawes's mother had graduated from Marietta College and his father was on its Board of Trustees, it was almost inevitable that he would enroll there. He received his bachelor's degree in 1884 at the age of nineteen, studied for two years in the Law School of the University of Cincinnati, and returned to Marietta to earn a master's degree.

Dawes, was a Union general who later went into the lumber business and was elected to one term in Congress. Dawes earned a B.A. in 1884, and an M.A. in 1887 from Marietta College; in 1886, he earned a law degree from Cincinnati Law School. Dawes opened a law practice in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1887. Dawes enjoyed early success dealing in real estate, leading him to other business ventures. He bought manufactured gas plants in La Crosse, Wisconsin, and Evanston, Illinois, where he moved his family. Working with his younger brothers, Dawes was wealthy by the age of 35. Peace Prize Winner Calvin Coolidge chose Dawes as his 1923 vice presidential running mate. In 1929, President Herbert Hoover appointed Dawes ambassador to Great Britain. In addition to his talents as a financier and diplomat, Dawes was a skillful composer of popular music. The Tommy Edwards oldie, "It's All in the Game," was set to music that Dawes composed.

Charles G. Dawes, 30th Vice President (1925-1929) I should hate to think that the Senate was as tired of me at the beginning of my service as I am of the Senate at the end.
It is ironic that "Silent Cal" Coolidge should have a vice president as garrulous as Charles Gates Dawes. A man of action as well as of blunt words, "Hell'n Maria" Dawes (the favorite expression by which he was known) was in so many ways the opposite of President Coolidge that the two men were never able to establish a working relationship. The president probably never forgave his vice president for stealing attention from him at their inaugural ceremonies, nor did he ever forget that Dawes was responsible for one of his most embarrassing defeats in the Senate. As a result, although Dawes was one of the most notable and able men to occupy the vice-presidency, his tenure was not a satisfying or productive one, nor did it stand as a model for others to follow. Banking, Business and Politics Comptroller of the Currency A day after losing the Senate nomination, the thirty-six-year-old Dawes began to organize the Central Trust Company of Illinois. He became its president and devoted his attentions to banking and to family life until the First World War. Dawes had married Caro Blymyer in 1889. They had two children and later adopted two more. In the late summer of 1912, Dawes suffered the greatest tragedy of his life when his only son drowned at Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, while on a brief vacation before returning to Princeton University. Deeply saddened, Dawes and his wife withdrew from most social life and turned to philanthropy. In memory of their son, they founded the Rufus Fearing Dawes Hotel for Destitute Men in Chicago and Boston, and later established the Mary Dawes Hotel for Women in honor of Dawes' mother.

Biography of Charles Dawes
Charles Gates Dawes was born on August 27, 1865 in Marietta, Ohio to General Rufus R. Dawes, and Mary Beman Gates. Charles's father had served with distinction in the Union army during the Civil War and later sat in the U.S. Congress. Charles G. Dawes studied at Marietta College and Cincinnati Law School in Ohio. From 1887 to 1894, Dawes practiced law in Lincoln, Nebraska, relocating permanently to Evanston, Illinois in 1894. Appointed United States comptroller of the currency in 1897, Dawes resigned in a failed effort to secure the Republican Party's nomination for U.S. Senate candidate in 1901. He then shifted his energies toward banking as he organized the Central Trust Company of Illinois. Dawes returned to public service in World War I and served as head of supply procurement for the U.S. Army in France holding the rank of Brigadier General. President Warren G. Harding appointed Dawes as the first director of the U.S. Bureau of the Budget in 1921. Dawes is perhaps best known for the Dawes Plan that temporarily saved Europe from economic collapse after World War I. Appointed by the Allied Reparations Commission to help Germany find a way to pay her enormous reparations to the Allies, Dawes presided over a committee that reorganized Germany's schedule of payments with the help of loans from American investors.
