Henry Hallett Dale
Sir Henry Hallett Dale June 9 July 23 ) was an English scientist. For his study of acetylcholine as agent in the chemical transmission of nerve impulses he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Otto Loewi
Research
Although Dale and his colleagues first identified acetylcholine in as a possible neurotransmitter , Loewi showed its importance in the nervous system. During the Dale was embroiled in the scientific debate over the nature of signaling at the synapse . Dale and others believed that signaling at the synapse was chemical, while John Carew Eccles and others believed that the synapse was electrical. It was later found that most synaptic signalling is chemical, but there are some synapses that are electrical. Dale also originated the scheme used to differentiate neurons according to what neurotransmitter they release. Thus, neurons releasing norepinephrine (a.k.a. noradrenaline) are called noradrenergic, neurons releaseing GABA are GABAergic, and so on. This scheme is related to Dale's principle (sometimes erroneously referred to as Dale's Law ). This principle states that each neuron releases only one type of neurotransmitter. Dale's principle has been shown to be false; many neurons release neuropeptides in addition to amino acids or amines (Bear, et al. 2001).

Fourth campus burial site found near RUH entrance
The burial site of the ashes of Dr. Robert Henry "Robin" Dale, who died in 1957, is identified by this stone marker, near the hospital's old ambulance entrance. Photo by Colleen MacPherson By Colleen MacPherson It seems John and Olive Diefenbaker and Sir Frederick Haultain are not the only ones to find their final resting place here on the U of S campus. A story in the Oct. 18 issue of On Campus News described the burial sites of the Diefenbakers and Haultain, but it seems there's at least one more. Set in the ground under a towering fir tree near the old ambulance entrance of Royal University Hospital is a discreet stone marker with a brass plaque indicating the burial place of the ashes of Dr. Robert Henry "Robin" Dale who died in 1957. Ruth Horlick, wife of Dr. Louis Horlick, professor emeritus of medicine, and a member of the medical community in Saskatoon since 1954, alerted On Campus News to the site and recalled Dale with fondness. A clinical associate in surgery and one of the city's first plastic surgeons, Dale arrived from England in 1953. A graduate of Cambridge University and the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh, Dale was also a member of a prominent scientific family - his father, Sir Henry Hallett Dale, won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1936 for discoveries relating to the chemical transmission of nerve impulses, and his brother-in-law, Lord Alexander R. Todd, was the Nobel recipient for chemistry in 1957 for work on nucleotides and nucleotide co-enzymes.

Abstract
In the 1950s, Sir Henry Hallett Dale undertook to compile and publish all the scientific papers of Nobel laureate Paul Ehrlich. He was assisted in this venture by Dr. Fred Himmelweit and by Ehrlich's former secretary, Martha Marquardt. A four-volume series was announced, but only three volumes saw the light of day, between 1957 and 1960. This report presents the result of a five-year effort to determine the reason for the failure to complete the undertaking, in which all potential sources were pursued and queried. In the end, the mystery remains unsolved. Search Journals About MUSE Contact Us

Ascorbic Acid Dopamine Pyridoxal Phosphate Benzaldehyde ... Oxytocin The natural source of the organic compound is described, as well as the primary uses for the compound. A brief explanation of its purification from its natural source and/or its laboratory synthesis is included. Resources are listed below the compound's information. The structures were made using the ChemSketch program from ACD Lab Software. Ascorbic Acid - Kevin Cartwright Ascorbic acid or vitamin C (L-3-ketothreohexuronic acid lactone) is essential to our lives. It has the chemical formula C H O and a molecular weight of 176.12g/mol. The hydroxyl groups and the other oxygen atoms give it a melting point of 190-192 C. They also allow it to be acidic and soluble in water and other polar solvents. Vitamin C is used as a coenzyme in the production of collagen. It is also thought to be a helpful tool to the immune system also.
Ascorbic acid was first isolated from citrus fruits in 1932, but it had been known about since James Lind found that citrus fruits prevent scurvy in the 1700s.
