Specifically, they proved, by examining the decay of K-mesons, that a reaction run in reverse does not merely retrace the path of the original reaction, which showed that the reactions of subatomic particles are not indifferent to time.

the Insurance Law Section of the State Bar of Texas
The institute is aimed at the broad spectrum of practitioners: consumer lawyers, trial lawyers, corporate counsel, and business litigators. Sessions will cover a mix of business and consumer insurance issues, such as current issues in homeowners insurance, the new regulatory scheme for homeowners and auto insurance, CGL coverage issues, business losses, duty to indemnify, declaratory judgments, selection of counsel under Texas law and more.
This conference brings together leading insurance law practitioners in a collegial environment with extensive opportunity for interaction and discussion with faculty. Two Wednesday evening pre-conference primers are offered, along with several other sessions, to provide a foundation for issues covered in the more advanced sessions.

CP Violation, 1980
Just four years after Ting and Richter received their prize, the 1980 physics Nobel went to two researchers whose discovery at Brookaven's Alternating Gradient Synchrotron (AGS) was the opposite of what they had expected to find when they began their experiment in 1963. James W. Cronin and Val L. Fitch, both then of Princeton University, proposed using Brookhaven's AGS to verify a fundamental tenet of physics, known as CP symmetry, by showing that two different particles did not decay into the same products. They picked as their example neutral K mesons, which are routinely produced in collisions between a proton beam and a stationary metal target. The experiment set out to show that in millions of collisions, the short-lived variety of K meson always decayed into two pi mesons, while the long-lived variety never did. But to their surprise, a "suspicious-looking hump" in the data showed an unexpected result that years of subsequent experimentation and theory have been unable to explain: occasionally, the long-lived neutral K meson does decay into two pi mesons. Cronin and Fitch had found an example of CP violation. Schematic of the experimental apparatus used by Cronin and Fitch.

BROOKHAVEN LAB LAUNCHES ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
WITH TALK BY NOBEL LAUREATE, JANUARY 23
Upton, NY -James W. Cronin, winner of the 1980 Nobel Prize in Physics for work he did at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, will launch a year-long celebration of the Laboratory's 50th anniversary, as the first speaker in the BNL 50th Anniversary Distinguished Lecture Series. The lecture series will feature talks on various scientific topics throughout 1997 to celebrate Brookhaven's beginning a half-century ago. The talks will be open to the public free of charge.
Brookhaven National Laboratory was established in January 1947 by the Atomic Energy Commission to perform peacetime research in nuclear science and related fields. Since then, Brookhaven has made major contributions to the advancement of science in areas as varied as biology, medicine, chemistry and physics. In fact, four Nobel Prizes in Physics have been awarded for work done at the Laboratory.
Dr. Cronin's lecture, entitled "The Highest Energy Cosmic Rays," will be held on Thursday, January 23, at 4 p.m. in the Laboratory's Berkner Hall.

Humboldt County sits approximately 200 miles north of San Francisco along the Pacific Coast on Hwy 101. Eureka, the county seat, is 278 miles north of San Francisco and 466 miles south of Portland, Oregon. The county encompasses 2.3 million acres, eighty percent of which is timber land and recreation areas. The county is mostly mountainous, except for the level plain that surrounds Humboldt Bay. Elevations run from sea level to 6,934 feet. Located within the county boundaries are 10 state parks, 16 county parks and beaches, recreational areas and reserves, and portions of the National Park and National Forest.
Humboldt County was incorporated on May 12, 1853. It's County seat, Eureka, was created on that same date. The county derived its name from Humboldt Bay which was entered by a sea otter party in 1806, but was not rediscovered until 1849. In 1850, Douglas Ottinger and Hans Buhne entered the bay, naming it Humboldt in honor of the great naturalist and world explorer,
Baron Alexander von Humboldt.

Numerical Evaluation of the Pion-Nucleon Forward Scattering Amplitude
James W. Cronin
Palmer Physical Laboratory, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey
Received 13 July 1959; revised 7 January 1960 The real part of the forward elastic scattering amplitude for pi -proton scattering has been evaluated from experimental cross sections by means of dispersion relations. Recent measurements indicate two peaks in the pi -proton total cross section at 590 and 870 Mev incident pion kinetic energy. Tables of the real part of the forward scattering amplitude for pi -proton scattering are presented as a function of incident pion kinetic energy in the laboratory. The forward scattering amplitudes obtained from some recent pi scattering experiments are compared with the calculations. Measurement of the forward charge-exchange cross section appears to be the most suitable way of investigating the predictions of the dispersion relation at high energies. The possibility of detecting Coulomb interference at small angles is also discussed. URL: http://link.aps.org/abstract/PR/v118/p824
