Francis Harry Compton Crick was born on June 8th, 1916, at Northampton, England, being the elder child of Harry Crick and Annie Elizabeth Wilkins. He has one brother, A. F. Crick, who is a doctor in New Zealand.
Crick was educated at Northampton Grammar School and Mill Hill School, London. He studied physics at University College, London, obtained a B.Sc. in 1937, and started research for a Ph.D. under Prof E. N. da C. Andrade, but this was interrupted by the outbreak of war in 1939. During the war he worked as a scientist for the British Admiralty, mainly in connection with magnetic and acoustic mines. He left the Admiralty in 1947 to study biology.
Supported by a studentship from the Medical Research Council and with some financial help from his family, Crick went to Cambridge and worked at the Strangeways Research Laboratory. In 1949 he joined the Medical Research Council Unit headed by M. F. Perutz
During the academic year 1953-1954 Crick was on leave of absence at the Protein Structure Project of the Brooklyn Polytechnic in Brooklyn, New York. He has also lectured at Harvard, as a Visiting Professor, on two occasions, and has visited other laboratories in the States for short periods.
In 1947 Crick knew no biology and practically no organic chemistry or crystallography, so that much of the next few years was spent in learning the elements of these subjects. During this period, together with W. Cochran and V. Vand he worked out the general theory of X-ray diffraction by a helix, and at the same time as

He is the elder child of Harry Crick and Annie Elizabeth Wilkins. Crick has one younger brother, A. F. Crick who is a doctor. He went to school at Northampton Grammar School and then Mill Hill School in London. While Crick attended University College in London, he studied physics and received a B. Sc. in 1937. With the guidance of Prof. E. N. da C. Androde, Crick began research for his Ph. D, but this was disturbed by the break of war in 1939. During the war, Crick worked as a scientist for the British Admiralty but decided to leave in 1947 to study biology. He married Ruth Doreen Dodd in 1940 and had a son named F. C. Crick but later divorced in 1947. He went to Cambridge and worked at the Strangeways Research Laboratory with the financial help of his family and a studentship from the Medical Research Council. In 1949 he joined the Medical Research Council Unit located in Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge which was later moved to Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in 1962. Crick became an accepted research student at Caius College in Cambridge in 1950 and received his Ph. D. in 1954. In the beginning of 1951, Crick met James Watson and decided to work together to determine the DNA structure. They used the x-ray diffraction images of larger molecules, which were made by Maurice Wilkins, as an aid for their experimental trials. After years of hard work and effort they proposed their idea of the double-helical structure for DNA in 1953. Later Crick and Watson also proposed a general theory for the structure of viruses together. In 1962 Crick, Watson and Wilkins shared the Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.

Francis Harry Compton Crick,
(b. 8.6.1916) (English) No one will deny Science's impact on modern life and culture. The products of Science, its discoveries, insights and ideas, have revolutionised our outlook on life and on the Universe, as well as, through Technology, our daily lives. But the logical process of Science, its methodology, the way it goes about choosing, defining and solving problems, has had no less effect on our way of thinking. Many people, of course, wish it were otherwise, and lament the reductionism (the attempt to explain everything in terms of elementary physical processes) and materialism (The belief that everything including human behavior is determined by the "laws" of physics.) Science has "imposed" on the world. Francis Crick is in the heart of this controversy. On the one hand, his 1953 discovery (with James Watson , Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin ) of the structure of DNA, the molecule that carries the genetic information, has had a tremendous impact on Science and has given him a platform from which his voice is widely heard. On the other hand, the process by which Crick and his colleagues arrived at the discovery is one of the best documented and known in the history of Science, recorded and analyzed both by the prime protagonists themselves and by competent historians. So when Crick declares himself a convinced reductionism-materialist, one at least listens:

Biography: Francis Crick
The life and times of Francis Crick Francis Harry Compton Crick was born 8 June 1916 in Northampton, England. Having attended schools in Northampton and North London, in 1934, aged 18, Crick began studying physics at University College London, graduating in 1937.
In 1951, James Watson arrived at the Cavendish and met Crick. The two quickly became friends and embarked on an attempt to uncover the structure of DNA. Crick brought to the project his knowledge of X-ray diffraction, while Watson brought knowledge of phage and bacterial genetics. Combining evidence from biochemistry, X-ray diffraction images created by Rosalind Franklin and Maurice Wilkins, and physical clues from molecular models, they determined the three-dimensional structure of the DNA molecule to be a double helix. This discovery was published in the 25 April 1953 edition of the journal Nature. The order of the names on the paper (Watson and Crick) was decided by the flip of a coin. This paper was quickly followed by another that suggested a mechanism for the replication of DNA.
