Sprague Lectureship
The Sprague Lectureship was initially established in 1959 by James Sprague with funds from a Merck Board of Directors' Scientific Award (a program which honors especially valued scientific leaders within the Merck Pharmaceutical Company) James M. Sprague James M. Sprague received his AB at Franklin College in 1930 and his PhD at the University of Wisconsin, Madison with Homer Adkins in 1934, studying the hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis of diketones. He then did postdoctoral work at Yale, and started at Sharpe and Dohme in 1937, and then continued at Merck Sharpe and Dohme when the two companies merged in 1953. Sprague worked extensively in the area of heterocyclic compounds. He made important discoveries in the area of sulfa drugs, which initially became important as the first effective antimicrobial drugs, but later found broader uses. Particularly important was the development of a new class of drugs, the thiazide diuretics. One of these, the drug Diuril, dramatically altered the treatment of congestive heart failure and high blood pressure. Other products he helped develop are Elavil, an antidepressant, and Benemid, a treatment for gout. Sprague died in 2000 at the age of 91. The Merck Lectureship in honor of Sprague started in 1959, when the first speaker was George Wittig, who later won the Nobel prize.

Donald J. Cram
Related Links Donald James Cram April 22 June 17 ) was an American chemist who shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for ?synthesizing three-dimensional molecules that could mimic the functioning of natural molecules.? He also won the National Academy of Science Award in the Chemical Sciences.
Education
Cram was educated at Rollins College Florida , and at the University of Nebraska , and he received his doctorate in organic chemistry from Harvard University in . He joined the faculty of the University of California, Los Angeles in and became a full professor there in
Field of Study
Cram expanded upon Charles Pedersen 's ground-breaking synthesis of the crown ethers , basically two-dimensional organic compounds that are able to recognize and selectively combine with the ions of certain metal elements. Cram synthesized molecules that took this chemistry into three dimensions, creating an array of differently shaped molecules that could interact selectively with other chemicals because of their complementary three-dimensional structures. His work represented a large step toward the synthesis of functional laboratory-made mimics of enzymes and other natural molecules whose special chemical behavior is due to their characteristic structure.

Enhancing Separations and Analysis
Scientific Impact: Cram helped to lay the foundation for one of the most active fields of chemical research, known as host-guest or supramolecular chemistry, which is directly applicable to separations. The work on inductively coupled plasma ushered in the era of ultra-trace multi-element analysis, enabling the rapid and accurate determination of up to 70 elements in metals, alloys, and organic compounds (such as oil, serum, blood, and soils). SIMION is used at every national laboratory. Social Impact: Inductively coupled plasma is used in environmental testing and the production of ultrapure materials for the semiconductor and nuclear industries. The research on supercritical fluids contributed to the recent introduction of "green chemistry" for commercial dry cleaning and polymer manufacturing. SIMION is used by instrument suppliers that design mass spectrometers. Reference: DOE-BES Chemical Sciences, Highlights of Progress in Separations Sciences , 1980-1999, Edited by Charles H. Host-Guest Chemistry
Introduction
Most people are familiar with the "lock-and-key" theory of enzyme activity. According to this theory, the catalytic activity of enzymes stems from the fact that the substrate, i.e. the compound undergoing reaction, fits tightly into a "pocket" in the surface of the enzyme much like a key fits into a lock. Once inside this "pocket", the substrate is held in close proximity to a reactant which converts it to product. The activity of enzymes has served as a source of inspiration for the research efforts of many organic chemists. The enzyme c hymotrypsin has played a central role in the research of Nobel laureate Donald J. Cram, who, for over 40 years, has been trying to answer the question "What makes enzymes such good catalysts?" Professor Cram's attempts to answer this question have led to the development of an entire field of chemistry known as host-guest chemistry. This topic provides an overview of that field and serves as our introduction to chemical reaction. We'll start with a brief survey of one class of reactions, nucleophilic substitutions.

But beyond this, my son, be warned: the writing of many books is endless, and excessive devotion to books is wearying to the body. Ecclesiastes 12:12
(Thanks to Tim Bray for the biblical scholarship) Ed Mosher, Ray Lorie, and I invented the first modern markup language in 1969, IBM's "Generalized Markup Language" (GML). It led to SGML, HTML, XML, and countless applications and variations on the theme. But strangely, considering that markup is for documents, for the first two decades in which the markup language concept was gaining its now universal acceptance, hardly any books were published on the subject. Well, the last five years have more than made up for the first two decades! In fact, despite the past two years having the worst sales ever for computer books, the number of XML titles tripled (although there has been a 5% decline in the past six months). This list includes all the books I know of with substantial content devoted to XML and its closely-related standards and technologies. It is shorter than the lists you get from bookstore search engines because it excludes editions earlier than the current one and books that are out of print or unavailable from Web vendors. (There are a few out-of-print books that are still relevant and are readily available.) I've annotated the list in varying detail, depending on how well I know the book and its authors.
