Presented by President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore at a ceremony on the White House South Lawn, September 30, 1993. Cram, like UCLA, was born in 1919. He joined the UCLA faculty in 1947 and taught chemistry, including introductory courses, literally to generations of students. "I was really shocked in the mid-1980s when a young student told me that her grandmother had taken my course in 1948," Cram wrote in UCLA Magazine in 1994. For many years, he led his classes in five minutes of singing each week.

Cram likes to point out that he and UCLA "grew up together," both having been born in the same year, 1919. He was on the faculty for 25 years before he even thought of himself as a potential Nobel Prize winner, but the possibility occurred to him when an older researcher, whose work he had been building on, became a Nobel laureate. By that time, Cram —and UCLA —had matured to the point where they had mastered the requirements of basic scientific research, including the writing of the grant —and patent —applications so crucial to sustaining such work financially. By the time the Nobel was granted Cram had created an entirely new category of science. "Host-Guest Organic Chemistry" was named by Cram for his discovery of "molecular recognition," which explains, he says, "practically all biological phenomena." Compounds are formed because one object of a given shape "recognizes" and fits with another to form a common surface, "like a right hand shaking a right hand."

His work opened the fields of host-guest chemistry and "carceplex" chemistry. During his first year as an undergraduate at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., a chemistry professor told Cram he did not have the mind for research. Cram viewed the comment as a challenge. After earning a B.S. degree from Rollins in 1941 and a master's in 1942 from the University of Nebraska, Cram earned a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Harvard University in 1947 and began his career at UCLA.

Welcome to my web page! I joined the Sloan faculty in 1997. My primary research interest is to help corporate management accountants, usually known as financial analysts, to support decision-making through statistical analysis of cost and budget system data. I have taught Introduction to Financial and Managerial Accounting for undergraduates and non-MBA students (15.501/.516), the managerial half of Introduction to Financial and Managerial Accounting (15.515) for MBAs, and a follow-up elective course for MBAs, Managerial Accounting and Control , which I am teaching again in Spring 2000. I enjoy both my teaching and research activities. I am especially interested in incorporating information systems applications to better inform study of managerial accounting. I have several research projects and publications in progress, which are listed within this Web site. For a somewhat dated overview of my background and current work, see

Nobel Prize winner's passion for chemistry and life is remembered fondly by colleagues ALLISON L. BYRUM, COURTESY OF UCLA In 1987, in his 69th year, Donald J. Cram received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry from King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. Uncharacteristically dressed in a tuxedo, the usually casual scientist graciously represented the University of California, Los Angeles, and the U.S. on the world's stage. Cram, however, did not view the Nobel Prize as the culmination of his career. The ceremony was simply a temporary distraction, but one that was accompanied by a prize that allowed him to continue his work. J. Fraser Stoddart, Saul Winstein Professor of Chemistry at UCLA, recalls Cram commenting that he felt "privileged to be born into a time when a large number of people, taxpayers, were willing to pay for him to practice his hobby."

Donald Cram: Finally Getting a Stone
Rollins adds yet another stone to the Walk of Fame, in honor of an esteemed alum.
By Natalie Millan Published: Friday, November 7, 2003 Media Credit: Brad Aboff A NEW ADDITION: Rollins celebrates the addition of a new stone to the Walk of Fame.
Attendants to the Walk of Fame ceremony for Cram included the esteemed Dr. Fred Wudl, Dean M. Willard Professor of Chemistry and Materials for the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), and Dr. M.J. Soileau, VP for Research for University of Central Florida.
Donald Cram attended Rollins College on a scholarship and was an active member of the campus community. Cram was involved in theater, was a member of the Chapel Choir and the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, and was additionally in several honor societies.
Upon graduating from Rollins, Cram attended graduate school at the University of Nebraska and went on to work at Merck doing penicillin research. Cram then studied at Harvard, and spent the remainder of his years teaching at UCLA, where Wudl studied and later conducted research with him.
