Betty Williams 1976 Nobel Peace Laureate Sometimes a Nobel Peace Laureate is created in an instant. Such is the case with Betty Williams, a native of Belfast, Ireland, whose intuitive, immediate response to a senseless act of violence created the Northern Ireland Peace Movement. Herself a mother of two, the 34-year-old Williams was overwhelmed by a passionate desire to take a stand against the violence that precipitated nightmares like the one before her. As soon as she could leave the accident site, she acted on her instincts and began canvassing her neighbors. Within two days she had collected 6,000 signatures on a petition that demanded peace and a stop to the violence. Despite fear of reprisals against her by Ireland’s warring factions, she appealed to Ireland’s women–both Catholic and Protestant–to work with her to rid their community of "this riffraff" in a local television broadcast. Following World War I, pro-independence guerilla groups, such as the IRA, wore down British resolve. In 1922, England established by treaty the Irish Free State, a 26-county area in the south of Ireland whose population is predominately Catholic. Exclu ded from this treaty were six counties in Northern Ireland, which contained a Protestant majority. While the treaty was a step in the direction of Irish independence, it gave England continuing control over a large area of the country indefinitely. The IR A and Sinn Fein, another pro-independence organization, repudiated the treaty.

Anti-War Heroes
Paul Corrigan My son recently chose Mairead Corrigan, a secretary from Belfast, Northern Ireland, and cofounder of the Northern Ireland Peace Movement (Peace People), as the topic for a school paper. He chose her because we share the same last name, but she was an excellent choice anyway. Corrigan won the 1976 Nobel Prize for her courageous stand against political and religious violence. Her story was still fresh on my mind this week when I read the story of Irene Vandas and Jennifer Ziemann on the CBC News website. Vandas and Ziemann, of Vancouver, British Columbia, recently volunteered to be human shields in an effort to stop the Bush administration and its allies from attacking Iraq. The courage and common sense of woman like Corrigan, Vandas, and Ziemann should be a lesson to all of us. We can stop the insanity. We can make a difference. In 1976, the police killed a member of the Irish Republican Army. In doing so, they sent his vehicle out of control, and severely injured Corrigan's sister and killed her three children. Corrigan responded by calling for an end to violence. Along with Betty Williams, Corrigan led 10,000 women, both Roman Catholic and Protestant, on a peace march. The march led to a movement to bridge the divide between Catholics and Protestants. Corrigan urged Protestant-Catholic integration in order to build trust and peace.

Parker Committee
A committee, led by Lord Parker, which in 1972 reported on the methods used by the security forces in interrogating detainees in Northern Ireland. Two members of the committee, Lord Parker and John Boyd-Carpenter, held that the interrogation techniques could be justified in exceptional circumstances, but the third member, Lord Gardiner, say that such methods were not morally justifiable. (see: Report of the Parker Committee) Pat Finucane Centre (PFC) A human rights and political development organisation based in Derry. The group was originally founded in 1989 as the Bloody Sunday Initiative and in 1993 changed its name to the PFC. He was shot dead by Loyalist paramilitaries, the Ulster Defence Association / Ulster Freedom Fighters, on 12 February 1989 amidst allegations of collusion between the security forces and Loyalists. The PFC aims include: the promotion by non-violent means the creation of an independent, pluralistic, democratic and non-sectarian Ireland; the promotion of understanding and respect for human rights; the encouragement of community development, community relations, conflict resolution and non-violent social change. Iona College Welcomes Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire Peace Activist Urges Rejection of Violence; Offers "Pathways to Peace" as Positive Alternative New Rochelle, NY, October 2, 2000 - On Friday, October 13th, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire of Northern Ireland will present " The Pathways of Peace ," a commitment to compassion and justice and the rejection of violence as a problem solving method. The address will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Spellman Lounge on the Iona campus at 715 North Avenue, New Rochelle. The public is welcome. There is no charge, but donations that enable worldwide peace initiatives to continue will gladly be accepted. Ms. Maguire, a 1977 Nobel Peace Prize recipient, is known for her work in founding The Community of Peace People of Northern Ireland with Betty Williams and Ciaran McKeown. The Community was the first interfaith nonviolence and reconciliation movement in Northern Ireland, and was created out of the immense social and personal tragedy of "The Troubles," including the death of three of Ms. Maguire's sister's children on the streets of Belfast. The deaths prompted a series of marches and demonstrations throughout the United Kingdom and Europe, demanding an end to the violence.
