Hume, Trimble, Corrigan Maguire in Joint Appeal for Vanunu Thirteen Nobel Peace Laureates, including John Hume, David Trimble and Mairead Corrigan Maguire, have signed a joint appeal calling on the Government of Israel to lift the restrictions re-imposed on the nuclear whistle-blower Mordechai Vanunu last April and to allow Vanunu to leave Israel. Recently, an Israeli Court has declared the arrest of December 24th illegal by pronouncing that he should have been free to visit Palestine including the West Bank and Gaza. On July 3rd, 2005, Vanunu also filed an appeal with the High Court in Israel against the renewal of all the restrictions. Contacts:

Founded in 1946, UNICEF is mandated by the United Nations General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights, to help meet their basic needs and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. UNICEF is guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child and strives to establish children's rights enduring ethical principles and international standards of behavior towards children. During the post-WWII period, UNICEF used an "emergency needs approach" to meet the food, clothing, and health needs of children, particularly in Europe. Today, UNICEF, the only organization of the United Nations dedicated exclusively to children, works with other United Nations bodies, governments and non-governmental organizations to lighten children's loads through community-based services in primary health care, basic education, and safe water and sanitation in developing countries. Norman Borlaug
Norman Borlaug is a plant breeder who for most of the past five decades has lived in developing nations, teaching the techniques of high-yield agriculture. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970, primarily for his work in reversing the food shortages that haunted India and Pakistan in the 1960s. Perhaps more than anyone else, Borlaug is responsible for the fact that throughout the postwar era, except in sub-Saharan Africa, global food production has expanded faster than the human population, averting the mass starvations that were widely predicted for example, in the 1967 best seller Famine 1975! The form of agriculture that Borlaug preaches may have prevented a billion deaths.

Maguire Protests War in Iraq
PEACE COUNCIL UPDATE letter (reproduced at the bottom of this page) asking him to meet with her and other peacemakers. On March 26, the first day of her protest, Maguire was arrested and released (see story below). On March 31 she issued the following statement:
PRESS RELEASE: Nobel Peace Laureate Issues an "Apology to the People of Iraq"
Mairead Corrigan Maguire, 1976 Nobel Peace Prize winner, continues daily vigil outside White House; calls for a cease-fire Washington, D.C., March 31, 2003 - From her daily vigil outside The White House, Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire called for an immediate cease-fire in the war against Iraq. Maguire is asking for a dialogue between the Bush Administration and the government of Iraq in order to put a halt to the unnecessary deaths of Iraqi civilians and soldiers from both sides. "It is with deep sorrow that I read the reports from Iraq and the ongoing shameful slaughter and destruction of human lifecivilians and soldiers," Maguire stated. "Two missiles from a single American jet killed more than 20 Iraqi civilians. Those killed included a mother and her 3 small children who were incinerated in their car." Maguire said that these deaths reminded her of the violent deaths of her sister, Anne Maguire, and her three children, Joanne (age 8), John (2) and Andrew (six weeks). Their deaths as a result of the violent conflict in Northern Ireland led Maguire to the work for which she won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976.

Women Who Made a Difference Irish Women Peach Activists:
Three children were killed by a Irish (IRA) gunman's car fleeing British soldiers. This senseless tragedy was a part of the ongoing violence in Northern Ireland between Catholic and Protestant extremists. Two women, Betty Williams, who came upon the scene, and Mairead Corrigan, the aunt of the children, led marches in which Protestants and Catholics walked together to demonstrate against violence. Many people in Northern Ireland recognized that violence would not bring social justice, but Williams and Corrigan had the courage to take the first step. At the presentation of their Nobel Peace Prize in 1976, it was said, "In the name of humanity and love of their neighbor; someone had to start forgiving... [and] shine forth when hatred and revenge threaten to dominate." Betty Williams emigrated to the United States, where she taught and lectured. Mairead Corrigan Maguire continued to carry the message of non-violence to other countries. Making Peace in Northern Ireland is a book about them for ages 9-12. Nobel prize winners The great international success and reputation enjoyed by the Nobel Prize are largely down to the calibre of its recipients. And amongst the elite group of more than 650 men and women are five people from Northern Ireland, whose work "has conferred the greatest benefit on mankind". Betty Williams, Mairead Corrigan, Seamus Heaney, John Hume and David Trimble have all been honoured as Noble Laureates Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan In 1976, Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan received the Noble Prize for Peace after they set up the Northern Ireland Peace Movement in a response to a passionate desire to make a stand against all violence and terror. Betty Williams had witnessed the driver of a getaway car, who had been fatally shot, mount the pavement outside her home and knock down a mother and her three children. The mother, though badly injured, survived, while her three children were killed on the spot. She went door to door along her street to encourage ordinary men and women to rise in protest against senseless violence. One of the first people to join her was the aunt of the three children - Mairead Corrigan.

Nobel Prize Winners Mairead Corrigan and Betty Williams When Egil Aarvik, vice-chairman of the committee presented the postponed 1976 prize to Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan in 1977, he began his speech with a graphic description of the tragic accident that had occurred the previous August on a street in Belfast in Northern Ireland. A car out of control, its driver an Irish Republican Army (IRA) gunman shot dead fleeing from British soldiers, smashed into a family out for a walk. Two of the children were killed outright, the third was mortally injured, and the mother critically injured. This senseless killing of innocent children produced a wave of revulsion against the violence which had been sweeping Northern Ireland. The movement was led by Betty Williams, a housewife who came upon the scene after she heard the shot, and Mairead Corrigan, the young aunt of the dead children. Aarvik told how the two women led marches in which Protestants and Catholics walked together in demonstrations for peace and against violence. That so many people in Northern Ireland had recognized that violence cannot bring social justice, Aarvik declared, gave hope that this could be "the dawn of a new day bringing lasting peace to the sorely tried people of Ulster." Williams and Corrigan "have shown us what ordinary people can do to promote peace." They had the courage to take the first step. "They did so in the name of humanity and love of their neighbour; someone had to start forgiving. ... Love of one's neighbor is one of the foundation stones of the humanism on which our western civilization is built." It is vitally important that it "should shine forth when hatred and revenge threaten to dominate." Theirs was "a courageous unselfish act that proved an inspiration to thousands, that lit a light in the darkness..."

She will be demonstrating that, with courage, any committed person can make a real difference in the world. Special emphasis will be placed on exploring ways youth can reduce the amount of violence in homes, neighborhoods, schools and communities. Prior to the two-day forum, students will study the history of conflict in Northern Ireland and the role Mairead has played in being a peacekeeper. They will also develop a plan for local action. The two-day forum and supporting training and resources is being co-sponsored by PeaceJam ( a non-profit organization based in Colorado), Project Service Leadership and the Vancouver School District.
  • Nobel prize winner Mairead Corrigan Maguire shared her story and supported 140 secondary students, college mentors, and teachers in implementing their plans to improve the quality of life in Clark communities and schools.

I often get angry with the leadership of my church, because of what I feel to be the faint-hearted manner in which it implements Jesus’ message. Nevertheless, I feel part of this church, because it is my spiritual home. Jesus recognized that people lived within social contexts, and loved them even in their weakness. He condemned all forms of abuse of power. I try to follow this example every day in my life and in my work. God and the Women’s Ordination Question
