The scientists of Weill Medical College of Cornell University are engaged in both basic and clinical research in such cutting-edge areas as genetics and gene therapy, neuroscience, structural biology, AIDS, cancer, and psychiatry. Our biomedical investigators are delving ever deeper into the realms of cellular and molecular biology, which hold the secrets to both the normal functioning of the body and the malfunctions that lead to serious medical disorders.
Among other notable accomplishments, Weill Cornell is known for the development of the Pap test, the first kidney transplant and dialysis treatment in New York City, the first human gene therapy trial for cystic fibrosis, the first successful embryo biopsy pregnancy and birth in the United States, and the first gene therapy for Parkinson's Disease as part of a new clinical trial.

Paul's background in computer science and ecology (M.S. Computer Science, Carnegie Mellon U., 1991; M.S. Organismal Biology and Ecology, U. Montana, 1998) serve him well as software architect and head of software development for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology (CLO) Information Science (IS) department. Since joining the CLO staff in 1997 and the IS department in 1999, Paul has focused on building software systems to collect bird monitoring information from citizen scientists. Most recently Paul has helped bring the "Birds of North America" into the digital age and will be building a new framework to create communities focused on scientific references such as the "Birds of North America."
While work on birds has taken Paul from Panama and the Bahamas to Alaska, the most important thing to him is using his skills for conservation. Back to top

Undergraduate Program Graduate Program Courses Links ... Open Positions Graduate Students Eric Henry E-mail: eh89@cornell.edu I am second year doctoral student here in the Department of Anthropology, and did both my undergraduate (in Canada) and Master's (in England) programs in the same field. My work centers on the city of Shenyang in Northeastern China where the one thing no one would stop asking me about was how to learn English. So now I study the process of language acquisition in an environment where the language exists as a fetishized object of desire; at times it is a market commodity, and at other times a fantasy, but always something elusive and beyond one's grasp and ability to possess it. Outside of academics, I dabble in cooking, writing, and have by far, the largest movie collection in the department.

After graduating from Cornell, Eric spent a year abroad in the United Kingdom studying plant taxonomy. He is now the Curatorial Intern at the Scott Arboretum at Swarthmore University.
Michael Van Valkenburgh '73
On March 7, 2005, well-known landscape architect, Michael Van Valkenburg, a 1973 graduate of Cornell's BSLA program, stopped in for a conversation with our students prior to delivering a larger presentation campus-wide. Some of Michael's more notable landmark spaces include Harvard Yard at Harvard University, the grounds for the Washington Monument, Pennsylvania Avenue at the White house, and Riverfront Park in Columbus, Ohio. The circularly arranged seats in the classroom were filled to overflowing, and the talk was as entertaining as it was informative. Michael's firm will be designing the landscaping for the Bailey Hall Renovation Project here at Cornell, so we look forward to future visits when he is in town.

Eric L. Savage
Welcome.
As you could probably guess from this picture , I am very fond of mountains. I especially like the White Mountains of New Hampshire, which is where I grew up. If the weather is good, with any luck I'll be hiking . I grew up and eventually moved back to the town of Exeter and taught at the Phillips Exeter Academy Summer School for twelve summers. I am also trying to finishing a Ph.D. dissertation in Operations Research at Cornell University where I work with Lee Schruben in the area of Discrete Event Simulation. My main interest is the logistics of modeling, particularly execution order and communication between different model representations.
On August 22, 2001, I finished the New England Four Thousand Footers and the New England Hundred Highest on Mt. Katahdin.
There is more information on my Hiking Page including upcoming trips that I am leading for the Appalachian Mountain Club and the newly added New Hampshire T3000 List Mountain pictures here and elsewhere are from the White Mountain Info Server Being away from Cornell, I have not been able to add as much to the page except for the hiking stuff.
