He received the BS degree in Biology from the University of Washington in 1982. He then received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1990 studying molecular biology. Afer spending 5 years at the NIH, Dr. Denkers joined the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Cornell. He currently has funding from NIH to study toxoplasmosis. Research Interests This image shows cells from the peritoneal cavity of a mouse infected with T. gondii tachyzoites. Cells were stained with antibody to IL-12 (shown green in this image), and nuclei were counter-stained red with the DNA-binding dye propidium iodide. At the bottom of the image are two neutrophils which display high levels of IL-12. In the top left of the image are two macrophages infected with T. gondii tachyzoites (four red parasite nuclei are visible in each cell). Although macrophages possess the capability of producing IL-12, the parasites are actively suppressing the cells' ability to produce this cytokine.

Eric C. Kollman Memorial Lectures Department of History, Cornell College Eric C. Kollman was a distinguished professor of history at Cornell College from 1944 until his retirement in 1973. During those years he inspired awe, respect, and affection for his scholarship, his commitment to teaching, and the friendly counsel he gave to his students. He taught frequently in summer sessions at many universities in the United States and Canada, and, on leaves of absence, at the universities of Mainz, Kiel, and Köln. In 1973 his biography of Theodor Koerner, a post-World War II president of Austria, was published in Vienna. Kollman's life was touched by many of the major events of twentieth century history. He was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire before the First World War and lived through the breakup of that empire. His formal education was completed in the 1920s with a doctorate from the University of Vienna. In addition to his major subjects of history and German literature, he studied philosophy, psychology, education, and geography. He was pursuing a teaching career when Nazi German occupation of Austria forced him into exile.

Eric Cornell, from the University of Colorado-Boulder, recently made a visit to Centre's campus. Eric, along with
Carl Wieman (CU-Boulder) and Wolfgang Ketterle(MIT), won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2001. His
lectures detailed the method that he and Carl Wieman used to achieve the world's (and the universe's?) first
Bose-Einstein Condensate. Also, he talked about the subsequent experiments he and his group are doing
on the phase of matter that won him a Nobel Prize. To view pictures of Eric's

Eric's Cornell Hockey Page
Well, I caught the college hockey bug when I was an undergraduate at Cornell has a beautiful campus located in scenic (but remote?) Ithaca, NY. In fact I got so involved, that for my last two years ('86-'87 and '87-'88) I was the skating mascot: the Big Red Bear. Cornell has a NCAA Division 1, hockey team affilitated with the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC). I try to keep up with them as best as I can. Of couse, I make it a point to go to the games when the Red play locally at Union and RPI, oops they want to be called Rensselaer. Although the program went through a slump in the early '90's Cornell usually has a top notch program that regularly challenges for the ECAC title and produced a number of professionals including: Joe Nieuwendyk Last Update: Jan, 27, 1998
The Current Season ('97-'98)
This years Cornell squad certainly has a tough road to follow as us fans may have become used to all the winning over the last three years. Realistically, Cornell has a shot to win the ECAC's again, but they will have to overcome upstart's Yale and Colgate as well as the always tough Clarkson and Rensselaer squads. Here's hoping that the Red make a good run! Check out the latest standings and the season long results:

Research - 60%, Teaching - 40% Research Interests and Current Projects The goal of my research program is to understand the nature of microbe-microbe and microbe-plant interactions that lead to reduced competitiveness and pathogenicity of seed- and root-infecting oomycete plant pathogens in the genus Pythium . I also seek to understand the mechanisms by which root-infecting fungal and oomycete pathogens and other root-associated bacteria respond to plants and plant exudates. This information is essential for the development of biologically-based technologies for plant disease control. Using techniques of molecular biology, biochemistry, microscopy, population ecology and community ecology I currently focus my study of the following research areas:

"natural language processing" means the processing of natural language (as opposed to language processing which is natural). Natural language is as opposed to artificial language - so English, French, etc. as opposed to C, Prolog, Perl, etc. Also, NLP is most concerned with processing of written language rather than spoken. Finally, note that another expansion of NLP ( neurolinguistic programming ) has nothing to do with this field.

Nobel prize winning physicist Eric Cornell to speak at ACU
For immediate release
Oct. 30, 2003 Nobel prize-winning physicist Dr. Eric Cornell will speak at ACU at a lecture open to the general public Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. in Hart Auditorium on ACU's campus. Cornell will also speak to physics classes and groups of students the next day. Cornell's public lecture will be on the topic "Stone Cold Science: Bose-Einstein Condensation and the Weird World of Physics a Millionth of a Degree from Absolute Zero." He will explain how and why atoms act the way they do when the temperature drops and the theory of this process, which scientists Albert Einstein and Satyendra Bose formed 70 years ago, said Dr. Rusty Towell, assistant professor of physics. "The significance of Cornell's work is that Einstein made this prediction, and Cornell proved that Einstein was right through lab work," Towell said. Cornell holds a bachelor's degree from Stanford and a Ph.D. from MIT. Since 1992, he has been a senior scientist with the Institute of Standards and Technology. He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado. Prior to receiving the 2001 Nobel Prize in Physics (shared with Carl Wieman and Wolfgang Ketterle), Cornell received awards including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the King Faisal International Prize for Science and the Benjamin Franklin Medal in Physics. On Nov. 7, Cornell will speak to a Modern Physics class at 9 a.m., have an informal pizza lunch with physics majors, and present a lecture to physics students at 2 p.m. on the topic "Rotating the Irrotatable: Quantized Vortices in a Super-Gas."
