While at Cornell, he founded a group within the Hotel School with the auspicious name of the Student Committee for Continuous Improvement (SCCI). Still riding the high of this success, a now sun-tanned Sinoway returned to the United States. After his time in the Caribbean, though, the prospect of returning to work for a corporation must have seemed anti-climatic. Pioneering, ambitious, hardworking, and service-minded, Eric Sinoway continues the Cornell Tradition. (top)

Bio
Growing up at Lowell Observatory , Dr. Boyce was exposed to the outdoors, the night sky, and tarantulas, all of which affected his later life to various degrees. He went to school in New Jersey and Cambridge (see below), in between which he designed oceanographic instrumentation under the tutelage of Win Hill at the late lamented Sea Data Corp. In 1992 he came to Goddard as an electronics engineer. In 1997 he was magically converted to an astrophysicist, and moved down the hall to be nearer the other scientists. Despite his previous experience with oceanography, he was disappointed when Astro-E plunged into the Pacific minutes after launch. He is learning about the joys of low-cost web hosting at his personal web site . And he hardly ever writes about himself in the third person.
Current position:
Astrophysicist, X-Ray Astrophysics Branch Laboratory for High Energy Astrophysics

Lee, won the 1996 Nobel Prize in Physics for their 1971 discovery of the superfluid helium-3, a breakthrough in low-temperature physics, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced today. (Oct. 9, 1996). "I couldn't believe it," said Lee, Cornell professor of physics, about getting a 5:30 a.m. telephone call from Sweden informing him of the prize. "I always felt that this was an important discovery, but this was a surprise. I thought, I guess I'm not dreaming." Lee taught an 8 a.m. undergraduate physics section today for freshmen and sophomores, but he spent the period describing his discovery.

Junior guard Jose Juan Barea put on a show Saturday night, scoring Northeastern's last 14 points and 19 of its last 21, including a fallaway three-pointer with nine-tenths of a second left, to lead the Huskies to an 88-85 win in the consolation game of the Pepsi Marist Classic in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Barea finished with 35 points, the second most in his career after the 38 he scored against Maine in the 2003 America East tournament. He was 11-of-23 from the floor and 6-of-12 from behind the arc. In the Huskies two games in Poughkeepsie, Barea averaged 31 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals en route to being named to the all-tournament team. The Huskies (1-1) went up 48-45 on a three-point play by junior Janon Cole, but Cornell scored 10 straight points to regain the lead, at 55-48, with 15:21 to play. Cole just missed a double-double, with nine points and 10 rebounds. Senior Marcus Barnes drained three-pointers on consecutive possessions, the second one giving NU a 62-61 lead with 10:35 remaining. Barnes scored 23 in the game.

Who am I?
You can look at my home page for more information, but the short answer is that I'm a dilettante who likes thinking about a variety of subjects. I am more of a systems-level big-picture thinker, although I do get obsessed with the details occasionally. Mostly this is a place for me to rant about whatever comes to mind, from social software to books I've read to politics to management. email me if you have any questions or comments.

Luther College welcomes Eric Cornell, 2001 Nobel Prize winner in physics, for Distinguished Lecture on March 20
    LECTURE CANCELLED
Due to weather-related road and airport closures in the Denver area, Eric Cornell has been unable to travel to Luther College. Cornell's lecture scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight in Luther's Center for Faith and Life has been cancelled.
Eric Cornell, a joint-recipient of the 2001 Nobel Prize in physics and senior scientist at the Boulder, Colorado-based National Institute of Standards and Technology, will present a distinguished lecture on the Luther campus Thursday March 20.
Cornell will speak at 7 p.m. in the Luther Center for Faith and Life. His talk, intended for the general public, will center on the scientific process that led to the creation of a new form of matter-the Bose-Einstein condensate. The lecture is open to the public with no charge for admission.
Cornell, together with Carl Wieman, distinguished professor of the University of Colorado, led a team of physicists in the landmark 1995 creation of the world's first Bose-Einstein condensate, a new form of matter that occurs at just a few hundred billionths of a degree above absolute zero.
