Compton, Arthur Holly
Encyclopedia Article Multimedia 1 item Compton, Arthur Holly (1892-1962), American physicist and Nobel laureate whose studies of X rays led to his discovery in 1922 of the so-called Compton effect. The Compton effect is the change in wavelength of high energy electromagnetic radiation when it scatters off electrons . The discovery of the Compton effect confirmed that electromagnetic radiation has both wave and particle properties, a central principle of quantum theory Compton was born in Wooster, Ohio, and educated at Wooster College and Princeton University. In 1923 he became professor of physics at the University of Chicago. While at the University of Chicago, Compton directed the laboratory where the first substainable nuclear chain-reaction was performed. ( see Nuclear Energy ). Compton also played a role in the development of the atomic bomb (

Arthur Holly Compton, a science prodigy, built and flew a glider at age 18. In 1920 he became a professor and head of the physics department at Washington University. There he deduced that X-rays, known to be waves, also act like particles. He proved it with an experiment showing the scattering action now called the Compton Effect. For that fundamental discovery, Compton won the 1927 Nobel Prize. After directing the World War II research that led to the atomic bomb, he returned to Washington University in 1945 as chancellor. In 1991 NASA named its new orbiting gamma-ray observatory after Arthur Holly Compton.

Arthur Holly Compton, 1892-1962
Arthur Holly Compton died on March 15 [1962], in Berkeley California, as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage suffered two weeks earlier. He was sixty-nine. He had retired last year as distinguished service professor of natural philosophy in Washington University (St. Louis) where he had served as chancellor from 1945 until 1953. he was planning to be active in retirement as professor-at-large between Washington University, the University of California (Berkeley) and the College of Wooster (Ohio), and had gone to Berkeley to deliver a lecture series on "Man, Science and Society". Compton received his B.Sc. from the College of Wooster, where his father, Elias Compton, was professor of philosophy, and received his Ph.D. in 1916 at Princeton University. The next year he was an instructor at the University of Minnesota, and then was for two years a research engineer at Westinghouse Lamp company in Pittsburgh. the year 1919-20 was spent at Cambridge (England) as a National Research Fellow, after which he was appointed Wayman Crow professor and head of the Department of Physics at Washington University, where he remained until 1923. During 1923-45 he served as professor of physics and dean of physical sciences at the University of Chicago, until he returned to Washington University as chancellor in 1945. He was president of the American Physical Society in 1934, of the American Association of Scientific Workers in 1939-40, and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1942. in 1927 he shared the Nobel Prize in physics with C.T.R. This award was established in 1966 in honor of the late Arthur Holly Compton to recognize and encourage outstanding contributions to education in nuclear science and engineering. The award is funded through an endowment by the wife of Edward Malinckrodt, Jr. and by George E. Malinckrodt, and is administered by the Education and Training Division.
The award recipient must have made an outstanding contribution to education in the field of nuclear science and/or engineering, but does not have to be an ANS member or work primarily in the education field. An engraved plaque and a monetary award of $2,000 to both the recipient and the recipient's academic institution are presented at the ANS Annual Meeting.
Nomination forms are available at this web site or from ANS headquarters. Eight sets of the nomination form and supporting materials should be sent to ANS headquarters by March 1.
