Genetics
"While there have of course been many important discoveries made during the 20th century in various areas of science, perhaps the most momentous of these advances have been in the area of genetics. Humans now have acquired the capability to use genetics to prevent and cure afflictions that previously were not treatable and to address issues such as pollution of our planet and the need for environmentally-friendly methods of producing food and energy. There is now the ability to understand through the study of genes the way that living cells function in health and disease, and perhaps most importantly—the potential of humans to affect their own evolution as well as the evolution of other living creatures. The ability of mankind to determine its future is a heavy responsibility that raises societal and ethical issues as well as scientific ones. "The ability to do all of these things stems from the discovery in 1973 that genes can be manipulated, transplanted between living cells, and cloned and propagated in cells that are not their natural host. It was for this discovery that Dr. Herbert W. Boyer and I have received both the National Medal of Science and the national Medal of Technology. I suggest that it may be appropriate to include some item or idea related to this discovery in the time capsule described in your letter."

Lab Information Stan Cohen's lab is located in the Department of Genetics at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Stan's primary field of research is molecular genetics, and the research interests of his lab focus on understanding important biological processes and events at the molecular level. His lab also develops bioinformatics tools to aid in this understanding.
Research in the Cohen lab is multifaceted. Rather than studying a particular organism, Stan tries to choose systems best suited to answering the particular questions that he and members of his lab group are interested in.
There are about 20 members of the Cohen research group. Our investigations are supported by the NIH, DARPA, the National Foundation for Cancer Research, and the Ellison Foundation for Biomedical Research.

Over hot pastrami and corned beef sandwiches, Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen opened the door to genetic engineering and laid the foundations for gene therapy and the biotechnology industry. For these outstanding achievements, the two collaborators received the $500,000 Lemelson-MIT Prize in 1996. Boyer and Cohen met in 1972, while presenting papers in Hawaii at a conference on bacterial plasmids. A Stanford University professor, Cohen had been working on ways to isolate specific genes in antibiotic carrying plasmids and clone them individually through introducing them to E. coli bacteria. Boyer, hailing from the University of California, San Francisco, had discovered a restriction enzyme that cut DNA strands at specific DNA sequences, producing "cohesive ends" that could stick to other pieces of DNA. Following the conference, the two colleagues met at a local deli to discuss using plasmids as a vector for cloning individual DNA segments. Boyer and Cohen agreed to collaborate, and in a matter of months succeeded in splicing a piece of foreign DNA into a plasmid carrier, which then inserted genetic information into a bacterium. When the bacterium reproduced, it copied the foreign DNA into its offspring, acting as a natural factory producing biological substances.

  • I was born in Brooklyn in 1922. Both my mother and father were Russian Jewish emigrants who came to America in the early 1900's. My father was a tailor and my mother, a housewife. Cohen, Stanley I was born in Brooklyn in 1922. Both my mother and father were Russian Jewish emigrants who came to America in the early 1900's. My father was a tailor and my mother, a housewife. Though of limited education themselves, they instilled in me the values of intellectual achievement and the use of whatever talents I possessed.
I was educated in the public school system of New York City and was bright enough to be accepted at Brooklyn College. Fortunately for me, my college education was most thorough (I majored in both Biology and Chemistry). Perhaps equally important was the fact that Brooklyn College was a city school and had a policy of no tuition; the cost of an education would have been prohibitive for my parents.
My scientific interests throughout my undergraduate days were directed to cell biology and especially the mysteries of embryonic development. I think my one insight into these problems was the recognition that much could be learned by the application of chemistry to biology. After working for a short period as a bacteriologist in a milk processing plant to save enough money to go to graduate school, fellowships enabled me to continue my education, first at Oberlin College, where I received an M.A. in Zoology in 1945, and then in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Michigan where I received a Ph.D. in 1948. My Ph.D. thesis concerned the metabolic mechanism by which the end product of nitrogen metabolism in the earthworm is switched from ammonia to urea during starvation. I remember spending my nights collecting over 5,000 worms from the University campus green.
