IN THE MATTER OF STANLEY ROBERT COHEN
Suffolk. May 11, 2001. - August 28, 2001. Attorney at Law, Disciplinary proceeding, Suspension. Collateral Estoppel. Information filed in the Supreme Judicial Court for the county of Suffolk on March 12, 1998. The case was heard by Greaney, J. Stanley R. Cohen, pro se. Terence M. Troyer, Assistant Bar Counsel. 1. Background. We recite the factual findings of the hearing committee, which were adopted by the appeal panel and the Board of Bar Overseers (board). In 1986, attorneys brought a class action suit, Lance Curley vs. Cumberland Farms, Inc., Civil Action No. 86-5057, on behalf of former CFI employees in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey (Curley court). The employees alleged that the defendant officers and employees of CFI had executed a scheme by which low-level employees were wrongfully accused of stealing from CFI. As part of that scheme, the defendants utilized threats, including that of being arrested, to coerce the employees into signing false confessions admitting guilt, even where the employees denied stealing. CFI allegedly fired the employees, used the coerced confessions to file criminal complaints against the former employees, and thereby obtained orders of "restitution" to which CFI was not entitled. On January 23, 1991, after the initiation of the Curley class action, the respondent commenced his representation of Cheryl Adams after she had been convicted, when he filed Cheryl Adams vs. Cumberland Farms, Inc., Essex Superior Court, No. 91-231 While representing Adams, the respondent became aware of evidence that CFI had engaged in the aforementioned improper scheme against many of its other employees. Over the course of the next several years, the respondent was retained to represent forty-six former CFI employees, whose cases will be discussed in greater detail below.

This Week Inventor Archive Inventor Search Inventor of the Week Archive Browse for a different Invention or Inventor Cloning of Genetically Engineered Molecules Herbert Boyer and Stanley Cohen combined their efforts in biotechnology to invent a method of cloning genetically engineered molecules in foreign cells. By this discovery and its applications Boyer and Cohen initiated what is now the multibillion-dollar biotechnology industry. Their collaboration began at a conference in Hawaii in 1972, when Boyer was a biochemist and genetic engineer at the University of California at San Francisco, and Cohen was an associate professor of medicine at Stanford University. The conference's topic was bacterial plasmids-circular segments of DNA that endow the cells carrying them with antibiotic resistance and other medical benefits. Boyer's lab had recently isolated an enzyme that could be used to cut strings of DNA into precise and "cohesive" segments: that is, the segments would carry the code for a pre-determined protein and could also be attached to other strands of DNA. Cohen had developed a method to introduce antibiotic-carrying plasmids into certain bacteria, as well as a method of isolating and cloning genes carried by the plasmids. Boyer and Cohen decided to pool their resources: Boyer's enzyme would allow Cohen to introduce specific DNA segments to plasmids, and use those plasmids as a vehicle for cloning precise, previously targeted strands of DNA. Within four months, the joint effort of Boyer's and Cohen's labs had succeeded in cloning predetermined patterns of DNA.

Cohen, born in Brooklyn, New York, attended Brooklyn College, Oberlin College, and the University of Michigan. In 1968, he took a research position at Stanford University. In the 1950's Cohen, working with Rita Levi-Montalcini, discovered proteins called cell growth factors that directed the growth of certain cells. For this work Cohen and Levi-Montalcini were awarded the 1986 Nobel Prize in Physiology. At Stanford, Cohen studied plasmids , rings of DNA found in the cytoplasm of certain cells. He succeeded in extracting plasmids from cells and transplanting them into the cytoplasm of others. In , Cohen combined his methods with Herbert Boyer's DNA splicing research to, for the first time, transfer DNA from one live organism to another, creating the first recombinant DNA organism. Cohen and Boyer's work had great effects in the fields of biochemistry and

I was born in Brooklyn in 1922. Both my mother and father were Russian Jewish emigrants who came to America in the early 1900's. My father was a tailor and my mother, a housewife. Though of limited education themselves, they instilled in me the values of intellectual achievement and the use of whatever talents I possessed.
I was educated in the public school system of New York City and was bright enough to be accepted at Brooklyn College. Fortunately for me, my college education was most thorough (I majored in both Biology and Chemistry). Perhaps equally important was the fact that Brooklyn College was a city school and had a policy of no tuition; the cost of an education would have been prohibitive for my parents.
My scientific interests throughout my undergraduate days were directed to cell biology and especially the mysteries of embryonic development. I think my one insight into these problems was the recognition that much could be learned by the application of chemistry to biology.
After working for a short period as a bacteriologist in a milk processing plant to save enough money to go to graduate school, fellowships enabled me to continue my education, first at Oberlin College, where I received an M.A. in Zoology in 1945, and then in the Biochemistry Department at the University of Michigan where I received a Ph.D. in 1948. My Ph.D. thesis concerned the metabolic mechanism by which the end product of nitrogen metabolism in the earthworm is switched from ammonia to urea during starvation. I remember spending my nights collecting over 5,000 worms from the University campus green.

Cohen, Stanley
(b. Nov. 17, 1922, Brooklyn, New York, N.Y., U.S.), American biochemist who, with Rita Levi-Montalcini , shared the 1986 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for his researches on substances produced in the body that influence the development of nerve and skin tissues. Cohen was educated at Brooklyn College (B.A., 1943), Oberlin College (M.A., 1945), and at the University of Michigan, where he received a Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1948. He joined Levi-Montalcini at Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., as a researcher in 1952. His training as a biochemist enabled him to help isolate nerve growth factor, a natural substance that Levi-Montalcini had found stimulated the growth of nerve cells and fibres. Cohen found another cell growth factor in the chemical extracts that contained the nerve growth factor. He discovered that this substance caused the eyes of newborn mice to open and their teeth to erupt several days sooner than normal. Cohen termed this substance epidermal growth factor (EGF), and he went on to purify it and completely analyze its chemistry. He and his coworkers found that EGF influences a great range of developmental events in the body. He also discovered the mechanisms by which EGF is taken into and acts upon individual cells. Cohen conducted his research at Washington University until 1959, upon which he moved to Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn., becoming professor of biochemistry there in 1967.
