The landscape of the Longlier region is covered with remnants of the primeval forest of oak trees, progressively invaded by evergreens. The bluegreen color of the pines, which blends with the blue-grey color of the massif of slate rocks emerging through a meager soil gives the countryside an aspect, severe, but also of serene beauty, and even more, when the pure coat of the snow covers it during the long and cold winters.
The population was sparse, at least at the time I was a boy. Our agglomeration was made of scattered small farms, regrouped into hamlets which, with the village, amounted to about 800 inhabitants in all. Rarely, because the people were few, a funeral procession was climbing slowly from the valley, back of our house, and to the old church next to the Charlemagne farm, with the cemetery between them.
The unique school of the Longlier region was built at the outskirt, a kilometer from my home, and about equal distance from the surrounding hamlets, so that the children could leave their home, and reach the school at about the same time. Actually, this school was just a single room with high windows, and a central stove, fed with coal and wood, by the teacher himself. As I remember, there was a set of 5 benches at either side of the stove, with a common sitting board which could accomodate 5 children, in all 50 seats, for an average population, from year to year, of 40 pupils, at the most. The sexes and grades were mixed, and the ages, from 6 to 11 years old. All the courses were taught at the same time, in the same room, by the same and unique teacher. Under this highly pluralistic system, the school was running smoothly, and the results, as remembered over the years, turned out to be, in every respect, excellent.

As usual for the time, the roads were not lighted at night, and no water distribution was available, nor in prospect. Due to the elevation of the site, we had to rely on rainwater, collected from the roofs, and on the clear water, filtering and running from the bare rocks, to the river and the streams below.
In the Ardennes, the washed soil is poor, and the configuration rugged. When the spring and summer came, the heat of the sun brought life and beauty to the land. The farmers, however, rose early and worked late, each on their farm, relatively far apart, without the occasion, or the need, to communicate between themselves. Even more than in the cold of the winter, there was a strange stillness, in the heat of the afternoon.

Celebrating 50 Years of Electron Microscopy and Modern Cell Biology
Journey Into the Cell
"The key to every biological problem must finally be sought in the cell," wrote the great classical cell biologist, E.B. Wilson, in 1925. Yet at the time Wilson wrote, the world inside the cell was largely inaccessible. The primary instrument of investigation for classical cell biologiststhe light microscopewas physically incapable of resolving a cell's fine interior details. Albert Claude compared the situation encountered by Wilson and his contemporaries to that faced by astronomers, "who were permitted to see the objects of their interest, but not to touch them; the cell was as distant from us as the stars and galaxies...." Indeed, before the advent of modern cell biology, pioneered by Claude at The Rockefeller University (then Institute) in the 1940s, many biologists viewed the cell as a mere "bag of enzymes," a "biochemical bog" filled with formless protoplasm and devoid of inner structure.
This famous first electron micrograph of an intact cell was published in The Journal of Experimental Medicine in March 1945, in "A Study of Tissue Culture Cells by Electron Microscopy," by Keith R.

Plexifilm introduces its most elaborate release yet: . This three-DVD set is the most complete motion picture collaboration ever released between filmmakers and artists. Spanning 30 years, this unique DVD package shows the passion, vision and complexity of the environmental art of Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The five award-winning films have been digitally remastered with new transfers supervised by Albert Maysles and presented with new interviews, feature commentary on all five films by Christo, Jeanne-Claude and Albert Maysles, an 82-page full-color booklet with an introduction by Albert Maysles, an essay by film critic Charles Taylor and a detailed history of the projects with exclusive photos, technical details, film stills and credits. This deluxe box will be released in association with Distributed Art Publishers (D.A.P.).
These huge undertakings, such as surrounding eleven islands in Biscayne Bay in Miami, Florida, erecting a 24-mile-long/18-foot-high fence in two Northern California counties or hanging a giant curtain between two mountains in Rifle Gap, Colorado, become stories of hope and triumph in the face of adversity. The act of filming becomes the project itself, as the filmmakers are present every step of the way from planning, approval, execution and display of these temporary artworks.
"[The Maysles Brothers] have made a compelling statement about the artist and society; Christo's success becomes personal, artistic and allegorical triumph." -Desson Howe, THE WASHINGTON POST

Baron Claude Lloyd Albert Smallwood
From Gamegrene
Baron Claude Lloyd Albert Smallwood (born -62/7/11 EC , ennobled -12 EC , the XIXth Baron Smallwood) is the estranged former husband of the infamous Bavarian Creame and is the most important producer of Adlorst wines . Baron Smallwood also grows a number of other grapes besides Adlorst Vinifera on his sprawling plantation in the Evesque Valley , as well as a decent-sized crop of Fefferberry , from which he makes the traditional Fefferberry wine. In addition to being a well-known vintner, the Baron is also known for dabbling in alchemy and is a suspected member of the Karcist League . His alchemical experiments are believed to have led to the inadvertent creation of the doggerel plague which swept certain parts of Ghyll in -11 EC , though he strenuously denies it. Quite the "gentleman farmer", Baron Smallwood has written any number of monographs on subjects as varied as "Maximizing Your Fefferberry Crop During Tourist Season", "On the Appreciation of Calvados", and "Favorite Plants of the Alchemist: Their Sacred, Healing, and Hallucinogenic Powers". In recent years, his ever unquiet mind has led him to explore numerous new avenues in animal husbandry, including his attempts to engineer a new breed of Mute Chukarandos Also a student of linguistics, the Baron has collected a vast library on his estate filled with explorations of language on Ghyll. He has been heard speaking to both plants and animals on his plantation in tongues previously thought lost to mankind. Occasionally, it seems as if the animals have even answered back! Though, this has yet to be fully documented. Baron Smallwood has funded several expeditions into distant lands for the sole purpose of cataloging and recording the languages of small, dying peoples. He is also the author of "Speaking of the Night; On the Ritual Use of Language in Midnight Ceremonies"

Albert Claude
In 1974 Albert Claude was awarded nobel price for his magnificent work in medicine. Belgian-American cytologist who developed the principal methods of separating and analyzing components of the living cell. For this work, on which modern cell biology is partly based, Claude, his student George Palade, and Christian de Duve shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1974.
Upon obtaining his M.D. at Liege University, Belgium, in 1928, Claude began research at the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research (now Rockefeller University) in New York City. In attempting to isolate the Rous sarcoma virus from chicken tumours, he spun cell extracts containing the virus in centrifuges that concentrated heavier particles in the bottom of the test tube; lighter particles settled in layers above. For comparison, he began centrifuging normal cells. This centrifugal separation of the cell components made possible a biochemical analysis of them that confirmed that the separated particles consisted of distinct organelles. Such analysis enabled Claude to discover the endoplasmic reticulum (a membranous network within cells) and to clarify the function of the mitochondria (see Figure) as the centres of respiratory activity.
Claude turned in 1942 to the electron microscope - an instrument that had not been used in biological research-looking first at separated components, then at whole cells. His demonstration of the instrument's usefulness in this regard eventually helped scientists to correlate the biological activity of each cellular component with its structure and its place in the cell.

USA 1974 - 1995 A lot of readers would have heard of Christo, an artist who they might consider strange given that most of his publicised projects seem to involve wrapping large objects like buildings and landmarks. In 1969 he wrapped the coast of Little Bay in Sydney with 90,000 square metres of erosion control fabric. But Christo's artworks encompass more than just wrapping things.
Born in Bulgaria in 1935 as Christo Javacheff, he met his Casablanca-born wife Jeanne-Claude in Paris in the late 1950s. They began wrapping structures and objects in the early 1960s, and moved permanently to New York in 1963. It looks like they spent a decade just wrapping things, but they began to branch out in the 1970s by creating enormous structures, not necessarily enormous in size but often enormous in scale; a 24.5 mile fence across the Californian landscape, half a million square metres of fabric surrounding eleven islands, a 381 metre-wide curtain across a valley in Colorado. Their latest project is to construct 7,500 gates in New York's Central Park, a project that was conceived in 1979 and is due to be realised in early 2005. All of their projects are self-funded through the sale of Christo's artworks, and all of the materials used are recycled.
In 1972 the pair commenced a working relationship with the Maysles brothers, David and Albert, two well-known documentary film-makers whom they had met a decade earlier. The collaboration has extended to five films, which are included in this deluxe package. Several were edited by Charlotte Zwerin who worked extensively with the brothers. The last of the five films only involved Albert, as David died in 1987. Apart from Christo, they made some superb films, like the Rolling Stones documentary Gimme Shelter and Horowitz Plays Mozart. Their style is very much cinema verite, with the narrative driven by the editing and eschewing the use of voice-overs.
