Summary These volumes contain the Ooyama, Esbensen and Chu analysis of upper air soundings taken during Phase III of GATE. The analyzed data has been interpolated to a regular grid using a statistical interpolation technique developed by Ooyama (1987: Mon. Wea. Rev., v.115, pp.2479-2506). The method was applied to the wind data by KV Ooyama and J-H Chu, and to the temperature and relative humidity data by SK Esbensen. A technical report on the temperature and relative humidity analysis is available from SK Esbensen Variables: temperature, relative humidity, u wind component, v wind component, divergence, vorticity, vertical motion Periods: August 1974 - September 1974. It's very simple. When an atom absorbs a photon from the laser, it absorbs the momentum of the photon. And every time it absorbs a photon, its velocity slows down by three centimeters a second. It then reradiates the photon with no preferred direction; what this means is that if you average over many photon absorptions, the atom constantly gets momentum kicks in the direction of the laser beam.... [T]he atom can absorb a photon and reradiate it in about 30 nanoseconds. So in the course of one second you can get a pretty substantial force on the atom, something like 100,000 times the force of gravity. This means that over the course of a millisecond you can slow an atom to an insect's crawl. What are the actual dynamics of the molasses?

The First World Scientific Nobel Laureate Public Lecture
by Goh Liang Zhen Professor Steven Chu, the Theodore and Frances Geballe Professor of Physics and Applied Physics at Stanford University, and the joint winner of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics visited Singapore in December. He delivered a public lecture at the invitation of World Scientific at the Marriott Hotel on 7 December 1998. He also visited the SPS Room the following afternoon, before delivering his second lecture entitled The Study of Individual Bio-molecules at the Lim Seng Tjoe Lecture Theatre. It was a cool evening after the long afternoon shower. The Marriott Grand Ballroom had a thousand seats placed in it, and they were nearly filled by the time Associate Professor Baaquie, the Master-of-Ceremony for the evening, went up on stage. The list of invited guests included Mr Peter Chen, Senior Minister of State for Education, who was the guest-of-honour; Professor Chong Chi Tat, Deputy Vice Chancellor, NUS, the chairman of the lecture; and of course, Professor Lee Soo Ying, Dean, Faculty of Science. The crowd included many members of the NUS Physics Department, and there were also many young and old faces, all gathered in the name of physics. SPS was well represented by Shang Shan, Hway Kiong, Hock Leong, Alexander, Alex, Yeong Cherng, Kim Yong, Serene, and Yuting, just to name those that I spotted.

Stanford Professor Steven Chu graduates to the rank of Nobel laureate BY BERT ELJERA When Professor Steven Chu got the early morning phone call last week informing him that he had won a share of the Nobel Prize in physics, his first reaction was one of overwhelming relief. After his breakthrough work in 1985 on cooling down atoms with laser lights, Chu became what is known as "PNL," or pre-Nobel laureate. He was, in effect, a Nobel Prize-winner-in-waiting. But that wait can seem like forever. Chu has friends who have waited 20 years to get the prize, and some have not received it at all. "You expect to graduate from college, but no one really has the right to expect the Nobel Prize," he said from his home in Palo Alto, Calif. "If you get it, keep calm." Now, he can move on, he said.

    NOBEL PRIZE: PHYSICS
    October 15, 1997
NEWSHOUR TRANSCRIPT Phil Ponce talks with Steven Chu, one of the three Nobel Prize winners in Physics, about his collaborative effort in developing a way to cool and trap atoms with laser light. Professor Chu shares the prize with fellow American William Phillips and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, a French colleague. PHIL PONCE: The last of the Nobel prizes were announced this morning, and today’s winners were in the sciences. In Physics two Americans, Steven Chu and William Phillips, and a French colleague, Claude Cohen-Tanoudji, won the prize. The scientists developed ways to cool and trap atoms with laser light. To explain that and its implications we’re joined by one of the winners, Steven Chu of Stanford University. Prof. Chu, first of all, congratulations. STEVEN CHU, Nobel Laureate, Physics: Thank you. PHIL PONCE: Did you have any inkling that this prize might be in the works, or did it come as a complete surprise? STEVEN CHU: Perhaps not a complete surprise but because every time about this time friends who mean well might say, well, here’s hoping, and so there’s a bit of agitation that I try very much to ignore these things and just proceed with my life. PHIL PONCE: Professor, what is it exactly, the work that you did, that precipitated the prize?

DNA Replication, Recombination and Cell Division in E. coli Our laboratory is interested in the processes of DNA replication, Recombination and Cell Division in E. coli . In particular, we are interested in how these processes are coordinated. It has been recently shown that replication forks stop for a variety of mundane, housekeeping reasons as they replicate chromosomes. This happens both in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. After stopping, these forks need to get repaired. This is thought to occur predominately by homologous recombination. Then after repair, these forks need to get up and running again. A special set of proteins call the Replication Restart Proteins form a multi-subunit complex at a repaired replication fork that helps to reload the replisome. In E. coli

Stanford, CA 94305 This is an abstract for a presentation given at the
Sixth Foresight Conference on Molecular Nanotechnology

There will be a link from here to the full article when it is available on the web. A brief history of the laser cooling and trapping of atoms developed over the past 15 years will be presented. The cooling and trapping technology is already being applied in numerous areas of science and engineering. Applications to be discussed include atomic clocks, atom interferometers, as well as studies in polymer dynamics and protein motion. Corresponding Address:
