The Emperor's "Alternartive" Autobiography, 6. Further Analysis of the British Political Scene, as it affected Ethiopia in 1935-6 By Richard Pankhurst As we saw last week the Emperor's "Alternative" Autobiography, which was written by a British adviser Percy Arnold, but never either officially accepted, or published, provides interesting insights on the history of the time it describes. Discussing the British political scene, and the British statesmen then on the world stage, the text continues: "In June 1936, when I [i.e. the Emperor] arrived in England, the British Prime Minister, one of those few men who held the fate of Ethiopia so much in their hands, was the Right Honourable Stanley Baldwin, Member of Parliament (Conservative). He had the reputation of being a superb political party manager, but notoriously uninterested in foreign affairs. He was also the leader of the Conservative Party and had now been Prime Minister for just a year in succession to Mr. Ramsay MacDonald. Mr. Baldwin had already in a previous government been Chancellor of the Exchequer (as the Minister of Finance in England is quaintly called) and had also held other government offices.

Lord D'Abernon, Austen Chamberlain and the Origin of the Treaty of Locarno
by Gaynor Johnson Bolton Institute
I.
1. At the end of the Locarno conference in October 1925, the Foreign Secretary, Sir Austen Chamberlain, sent a letter of thanks to Lord D'Abernon, the British ambassador to Berlin. He wrote: I wish to record my high appreciation of the services which you have rendered not only to H[is] M[ajesty's] G[overnment] but to the peace of Europe in your character as His Majesty's Ambassador to Berlin. I congratulate you on the success of an endeavour to which your influence and advice have so powerfully contributed. D'Abernon, flattered by the warmth of this tribute, returned the compliment, writing of the way in which Chamberlain had 'steered' the 'ship of negotiation' into the 'harbour of signature'. These letters reflected the views of a wide circle of opinion. D'Abernon, it was believed, had a special rapport with the Germans.

Biography Base Home Link To Us Search Biographies: Browse Biographies A B C D ... Z Stanley Baldwin Biography Stanley Baldwin , 1st Earl Baldwin of Bewdley (August 3, 1867 - December 14, 1947) was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on three separate occasions.
Born at Bewdley in Worcestershire he was educated at Harrow and Cambridge, and went into the family business. In 1908 he succeeded his deceased father as Conservative MP for Bewdley. In 1917 he was appointed to the junior ministerial post of Financial Secretary to the Treasury where he sought to encourage voluntary donations by the rich in order the repay the United Kingdom's war debt, notably writing to The Times under the peusdonym 'FST'. In 1921 he was promoted to the Cabinet as President of the Board of Trade in 1921.
In late 1922 dissatisfaction grew within the Conservative Party about the coalition it was in with David Lloyd George. At a meeting of Conservative MPs at the Carlton Club in October Baldwin announced that he would no longer support the coalition and famously condemned Lloyd George for being a "dynamic force" that was bringing destruction across politics. The meeting chose to leave the coalition despite the views of most of the party leadership. As a result the Conservatives' new leader, Andrew Bonar Law was forced to find new ministers for his Cabinet and so he promoted Baldwin to the position of Chancellor of the Exchequer. In November a general election was held and the Conservatives were returned with a majoirty.
