Early life
Joseph Chamberlain , father of Neville Chamberlain was the eldest son from Birmingham Mayor Joseph Chamberlain 's second marriage and also half-brother to Sir Austen Chamberlain . His mother died in childbirth in when he was only six years old, and the young Chamberlain and his siblings found that as a result they had strained relations with their father, who had lost his first wife the same way. Chamberlain grew up developing his strongest bonds with those siblings who were closest in age to him, most notably his sisters Ida and Hilda to whom he would write every week he was away from them.

D.12 PEARL MARY TERESA RICHARDS CRAIGIE PAPERS, 1888-1911 1 box. Pearl Craigie (1867-1906) was the daughter of a New York merchant who settled in London soon after she was born. She was educated in England, and was married for a brief time to an Englishman, Reginald Walpole Craigie, by whom she had a son. In 1891, she published her first book, a short epigrammatic novel, under the pseudonym of John Oliver Hobbes, a name she continued to use to the end of her career. Her novels of society life were very popular, but by 1897 the tone had begun to change. She then produced novels which contained Roman Catholic themes, reflecting her deep commitment to the Catholic Church, which she joined in 1892, shortly after she left her husband. She also wrote critical essays and plays. The most successful of the plays was the comedy The Ambassador , produced by Sir George Alexander in 1898. The collection consists of letters written to Mrs. Craigie by various members of London society, and of the London theatrical and literary worlds concerning her novels and plays. The largest groups are those from James E. C. Welldon, headmaster of Harrow and Bishop of Calcutta, and those from Sir George Alexander, who produced her plays. There are also letters addressed to Mrs. Craigie's father, John Morgan Richards, concerning the "Life" of Mrs. Craigie which he edited after her untimely death at age 38.

In 1929 the German foreign minister Gustav Stresemann proposed that France, Germany and Belgium should recognize as permanent their frontiers that was agreed at Versallies . This included the promise not to send German troops into the Rhineland and the acceptance that Alsace-Lorraine was permantely part of France. The French foreign minister, Aristide Briand , agreed with Stressemann's proposals and signed the treaty. However, as Germany refused to guarantee its eastern frontiers France sought to give Poland and Czechoslovakia they security they required by signing treaties with them. The Treaty of Locarno was signed in October 1925. This enabled Germany to be admitted to the League of Nations . However, Adolf Hitler tore up the treaty when he sent in the German Army into the Rhineland in 1936.

    My dear P.M.,
Chamberlain [1] is evidently a very sick man. The photographs of
his departure oft his health trip to the West Indies were rather
alarming and would give one to think that he had had a stroke, but
I am assured that this was not so. He is 65, has taken no exercise
for years, has done himself very satisfactorily in the way of food
and drink, and has consistently overworked. Added to which he is
much the same type as his father, who cracked rather suddenly at

Hankey [1] is back from a few weeks' holiday abroad and I had a
    long talk to him yesterday.
He is very much concerned about the Anglo-French Naval muddle and
he is rather inclined to think that the only solution is to take a
strong line and place the Agreement before the Preparatory
Committee on Disarmament at Geneva when it meets next in about
January, and make an attempt to have it accepted by all concerned- this would mean, of course, the majority of nations outside of

    http://www.marxists.org/archive/chamberlin-william/1929/soviet-russia/ch10.htm
    MAIN CURRENTS IN FOREIGN POLICY
THE whole trend of Soviet foreign policy is first of all determined by the political isolation of the Soviet Union. Isolation, of course, is a relative term. The Soviet Union is no longer commercially blockaded or subjected to a complete diplomatic boycott, as was the case during the period of civil war and intervention, from 1918 until 1921. But the recent Revolution and its results, the unsolved question of foreign claims for repudiated debts and confiscated property, Communist activity in the labor movement of Western Europe and in the Asiatic colonies of the European powers - all these factors, to a greater or less degree, tend to estrange the Soviet Union from the other nations of the world. Hence there is an essentially defensive character in Soviet foreign policy. Holding aloof from the League of Nations, in which it sees an assembly of mostly hostile powers, taking no part in the new groupings and alliances which have grown up in post-war Europe, the Soviet Government is first of all concerned to block the creation and paralyze the activity of military, political, and economic understandings which may be directed against it. In the spring of 1927, when three ominous developments, the raid of the Chinese police on the Soviet Embassy in Peking, the breach of diplomatic relations with Great Britain, and the murder of Volkov, the Soviet Ambassador in Warsaw, followed in fairly quick succession, there was a quite genuine and wide-spread conviction in Soviet official circles that Russia was in imminent danger of actual war. The events of the following two years did not bear out these extreme apprehensions; but the shadow of the possible war menace has by no means disappeared from the Soviet political horizon. To ward off attack or hostile encirclement is, I think, the primary objective of Soviet diplomacy at the present time.

    HISTORY: Intellectuals and leadership
    Walter Elliot, 1888-1958
“He talks too much”. Such was Sir Winston Churchill’s less than generous summary of Walter Elliot, Scots Tory Member of Parliament, cabinet minister, coming man of the 1920s and 30s and widely imagined, at least by his many friends, as a certainty for the premiership. It is ironic, therefore, that a man marked down by the hero of the last century as having too much to say is, less than fifty years after his death, now virtually unheard of. Ironic but hardly surprising. Except for a rather sugary account by his lifelong friend and posthumous champion Sir Colin Coote, published nearly forty years ago, there is no modern biography of Walter Elliot. And as Coote’s work is long out of print , now only to be got on the musty shelves of second hand bookstores in Hay-on-Wye, his subject seems destined to languish, increasingly discarded by history, as just another index reference in other people’s stories. And yet, but for the indecision of a single night, it is arguable that things might have been very different. The stars in their courses are apt to be capricious but for the first twenty years of Walter Elliot’s political life, they seemed set firm in their ascent and he along with them. A Baldwin Boy though, unlike Eden, never a “glamour boy”, a successful cabinet minister with the common touch, warmly regarded, at least until he was Prime Minister, by Neville Chamberlain, the gaming chips of political preferment seemed his for the cashing. Munich changed all that.

    Neville Chamberlain
Neville Chamberlain (1869-1940), British prime minister from May 28, 1937, to May 10, 1940, whose name is identified with the policy of "appeasement" toward Adolf Hitler's Germany in the period immediately preceding World War II. The son of the statesman Joseph Chamberlain and younger half brother of Sir Austen Chamberlain, he managed his father's sisal plantation on Andros Island, Bahamas, and then prospered in the metalworking industry in Birmingham.
Chosen lord mayor of that city in 1915, he organized in 1916 a municipal savings bank, the only one in Great Britain. In December 1916 he joined David Lloyd George's World War I coalition government as director general of national service, but, having insufficient powers, he resigned in August 1917.

    http://www.le.ac.uk/hi/pg/mahist/conservative_century.html
CONSERVATIVE CENTURY: THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY IN BRITISH POLITICS The Conservative Party has been the most successful force in modern British politics. Although identified with the elite, they were consistently able to mobilise popular support. They have had three long periods of dominance since the advent of mass democracy in 1918, and taken as a whole the twentieth century was indeed the ‘Conservative century’. Yet the party’s position has rarely seemed secure, and its leaders were often under threat. The Conservatives have been continually troubled with factionalism and internal revolts, and suffered three landslide defeats in 1906, 1945 and 1997. As well as being the most significant, the Conservatives remain the most complex and least understood force in modern British political history. This module explores the history and nature of the party from Balfour to Major, and considers the reasons for the periods of dominance and of defeat. It takes two parallel approaches: a chronological examination of the party’s history, and a structural analysis of the role and development of its various elements. Themes considered include the rise and fall of leaders; the roles of the MPs, party organisation and the local grass-roots; effectiveness in government; electoral performance, and adaptability and recovery in opposition.
