He attended Manchester High School before entering Manchester University in 1908. He graduated from the Honours School of Physics in 1911, and then spent two years in the Physical Laboratory in Manchester, where he worked on various radioactivity problems for Professor (later Lord) Rutherford. In 1913 he graduated with a M.Sc. degree and received a scholarship to work for Professor Geiger in the Physikalisch Technische Reichsanstalt at Charlottenburg, Berlin. In 1919, he returned to England and resumed working for Rutherford, who had moved to the Cavendish Laboratory , Cambridge. Rutherford had succeeded in disintegrating atoms (spontaneous emission by a nucleus of photons or particles) and Chadwick joined Rutherford in his studies of the properties and structure of atomic nuclei. In 1932, Chadwick made a fundamental discovery in the domain of nuclear science: he proved the existence of neutrons - elementary particles devoid of any electrical charge. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 1935, "for the discovery of the neutron". This discovery provided a new tool for inducing atomic disintegration, since neutrons, being electrically uncharged, could penetrate into the atomic nucleus without deflections whereas protons cannot do so.

JAMES CHADWICK (1891 - 1974)

Sir Ronald Ross Professor Charles Barkla Sir Charles Sherrington Sir James Chadwick ... Professor Joseph Rotblat In addition, two of the University's scientists were recently awarded what is popularly known as the ' American Nobel Prize in Medicine In 1902, Sir Ronald Ross was the first Briton to be awarded a Nobel Prize for Medicine - for demonstrating that malaria parasites are transmitted by Anopheles mosquitoes. At the time, he was a lecturer - and subsequently Professor of Tropical Medicine - in the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine. Professor Charles Barkla won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1917 for discovering the electromagnetic properties of X-rays - a discovery of considerable importance since it meant that X-radiation could be regarded as similar to ordinary light. Charles Barkla obtained his excellent grounding in physics at University College, Liverpool, where he studied under Oliver Lodge, gaining a first class honours degree and then a Masters degree in physics.

English physicist who worked with Rutherford on the bombardment of elements with alpha particles In the 1920s, Rutherford and Chadwick attempted to find a uncharged elementary particle, but failed. Then, Chadwick repeated the earlier experiment of Bothe and and by exposing beryllium to alpha particles The Be then gave off radiation which could eject protons from the paraffin. In 1932, Chadwick showed that a neutral particle beam was the only way to interpret the ejection of protons This amounted to the discovery of the neutron For this, he received the 1935 Nobel Prize in physics. With Goldhaber , Chadwick also determined the structure of the deuteron Furthermore, he showed that the spectrum of beta particles emitted by radioactive elements was continuous, providing the experimental need for neutrinos and discovered deviation from the r law for deep Rutherford scattering Bothe Goldhaber Joliot-Curie (Frederic) ...
