Mostly, it belonged to the upper middle class but also had certain aristocratic roots. His father was a Spaniard, his mother of English birth but also with some Italian blood - Cela is said to count with pride both English pirates and Italian politicians among his ancestors. After leaving school, he began medical studies but, with greater interest, attended literary lectures in the philosophical faculty. The studies were broken off, however, by the civil war. Owing to pulmonary tuberculosis, he made his way to his native district, where the nationalists were in control, and he was enrolled as a private on their side but was exempted after having been badly wounded. After the war, he returned to Madrid to resume his studies, this time, in law, but came to devote more and more time to writing. In 1942, he published the novel that made his name -

Nobel Prize-winning author Camilo Jose Cela dead
MADRID, Spain (CNN) Spanish writer Camilo Jose Cela, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1989, has died at the age of 85. He died in a Madrid hospital from complications due to his chronic heart and respiratory problems, attending physician Dr. Mariano Malillos, of the Clinica Cemtro, told CNN partner network CNN+. Cela was one of the best-known writers in Spain and Latin America. His works included "The Family of Pascual Duarte," ("La Familia de Pascual Duarte"), a 1942 novel about a man condemned to death, and "The Hive," ("La Colmena"), a 1951 novel portraying decadence and poverty in Spain after the Civil War of 1936-1939. "The Hive" was first published in 1951 in Argentina because it was banned in Spain at the time under the right-wing dictatorship of Francisco Franco. EXTRA INFORMATION In-depth Special: Nobel Centennial "We have lost probably the most universal writer Spain had in the second half of the 20th century," Spanish Culture Minister Pilar del Castillo told national radio.

Author: Cela, Camilo Jose
Date and Place of birth:
b. May 11, 1916, Iria Flavia - Coruña, Spain d. January 17, 2002, Madrid, Spain Life and Works:
Cela's mother was of British origin and his father was a part-time author. He studied at Madrid University, and served in Franco's forces during the Civil War. His first novel, La familia de Pascual Duarte The Family of Pascual Duarte ), was banned for its seemingly gratuitous violence. The novel had enormous influence during the decade after its publication. Cela employs techniques drawn from the Renaissance Spanish picaresque novel to give first-person account. In the purported autobiography, Pascal Duarte's prison memoirs, a primitive criminal awaits execution for the murder of his mother. Pascual Duarte is both a bloody criminal and victim of a destructive social environment. His life reflects the crude reality of rural Spain in Franco's time. The range of his work is vast and varied, but he is best known for La Colmena The Hive ), which recreates daily life in Madrid in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. In the fragmented chronology, which took more than five years to write, appears some 250 to 360 characters.

BIOGRAFIA
