Nobel Prize for Peace The son of a Jewish merchant, Cassin studied law before entering the French Army in World War I. During the war he sustained a severe abdominal wound, the effects of which troubled him for the rest of his life. He later became a professor of international law in Paris and then, from 1924 to 1938, served as a French delegate to the League of Nations assemblies and disarmament conferences in Geneva. After the fall of France in June 1940, he joined General Charles de Gaulle in London and served as a key member of the Free French government in exile.

René Cassin (1887 - 1976) Surnommé “l'homme des droits de l'homme”, René Samuel Cassin fut le “père spirituel” et le rédacteur principal de la Déclaration Universelle des Droits de l'Homme adoptée par l'O.N.U en 1948. Gravement blessé durant la première guerre mondiale, il dénonce l'incohérence des conflits et fonde en 1918 l'union des anciens combattants comptant plus d'un million d'adhérents. Membre de la délégation française à la Société Des Nations en 1924, il participe à la création de l'Union Européenne n'ayant plus désormais qu'un seul dessein : concrétiser ses propensions humanitaires et « effacer toute frontière entre les hommes, reconnaissant à chacun d'entre eux les mêmes droits inséparables à la dignité d'être ». Plus proche des êtres que des idéologies, ce juriste hors pair participe à la vie politique de son pays comme un internationaliste, soucieux de mener sa mission d'humaniste à travers la défense des droits fondamentaux des individus. Ce faisant, dès la montée du nazisme, il énonce déjà comment les nations pourront rétablir une Paix durable. Aussi, pour son action en faveur du « respect des droits de l'homme sur le plan mondial », le comité Nobel d'Oslo lui attribue en 1968 le prix Nobel de la Paix.

Cassin, René born 1887, Bayonne, France died 1976, Paris Facts League of Nations and the Geneva Disarmament Convention and was a jurist by profession. He was vice chair of the Nuclear Committee, and the chief delegate to France in all three sessions. In 1949, Cassin was elected vice chair of the Commission of Human Rights and later on,in 1955, became chair. He also served as a judge on the European Court of Human Rights from 1959 to 1970. During this time Cassin was President of the Court during two periods. He recieved the Nobel Peace Prize in 1968, as a recognition for his work in the drafting of the Declaration of Human Rights Additionally, he was a Zionist. Assessment human rights . For these reasons, the delegates to the Commission on Human Rights selected Cassin to compose the first full draft of the Universal Declaration. This early draft would contain most of the rights and much of the language that would later be set forth in the final document. The failure of the League of Nations to address the human rights situation in Germany prior to World War II was a great disappointment to Cassin. As the Nazis launched their campaign of murder and terror unimpeded by the international community, Cassin became determined that any future organization of nations would have greater strength and courage to fight against violations of human rights. Horrified by emerging news of Nazi atrocities, Cassin spent World War II as a member of the resistance in London, serving as the legal advisor to Charles de Gaulle.

Cassin, René A jurist, humanitarian, and internationalist, René Samuel Cassin (October 5, 1887- )* is one of the world's foremost proponents of the legal as well as the moral recognition of the rights of man. Neither a pessimist nor an optimist, the peace laureate, eighty-one years old when awarded the prize in 1968, confessed that "men are not always good" but he has based much of his life's work on the premise that human responses can be constructive if states will transform the conditions that breed ill will into those that recognize the dignity of man. Cassin was born in Bayonne (Basses-Pyrénées), the son of Gabrielle (Dreyfus) Cassin and Henri Cassin, a merchant. Having established a record of intellectual brilliance at the Lycée of Nice, he added to it in his advanced studies at the University of Aix-en-Provence where, in 1908, he received a degree in the humanities, along with one in law. He took first place in the competitive examination given by the Law Faculty and in 1914 received the doctorate in juridical, economic, and political sciences. Cassin has made his career in law as practitioner, professor, scholar, administrator, and promoter. The legal career which he began in 1909 in Paris, where he was a counsel at the Court of Paris, was brought to an end when he was inducted into the infantry in 1914. Severely wounded in 1916 by German shrapnel, he survived, but only because his mother, serving as a nurse in the field hospital to which he had been carried, persuaded the doctors to perform surgery. Although the injury he sustained was to give him acute discomfort throughout his life, he recovered, married Simone Yzombard of Marseilles, and entered upon his career as a professor of law at Aix late in 1916.

Concours René Cassin Chaque année, depuis 1985, l'Association Juris Ludi organise le Concours Européen des Droits de l'Homme René Cassin. Son but est de promouvoir la connaissance et la pratique des droits de l'Homme, plus particulièrement de la Convention Européenne, par des étudiants en droit venus du monde entier. Le sérieux juridique et scientifique du Concours est assuré par le Conseil Scientifique de l'Association, composé d'universitaires, de fonctionnaires internationaux du Conseil de l'Europe et d'avocats. Il est chargé d'élaborer le cas fictif sur la base duquel des équipes de deux plaideurs et un conseiller juridique et/ou linguistique rédigent un mémoire et préparent leurs plaidoiries. Phase 1 : Le mémoire Le mémoire de chaque équipe, en requête ou en défense selon le tirage au sort, est ensuite corrigé par les membres du jury et le Conseil Scientifique. Ce mémoire doit allier une analyse approfondie des dispositions de la Convention Européenne des Droits de l'Homme, l'étude de la jurisprudence correspondante, la recherche de la doctrine, à un raisonnement juridique, cohérent et solide, fondé sur des arguments pertinents ainsi qu'une bonne maîtrise de la langue française, langue officielle du Concours. Phase 2 : Les plaidoiries La deuxième phase du Concours se déroule au Palais des Droits de l'Homme à Strasbourg et permet aux plaideurs de mettre en valeur leurs talents d'orateurs et de confronter leurs raisonnements juridiques.
