An original and creative thinker, Carrel was the first to develop a successful technique for suturing blood vessels together. For his work with blood-vessel suturing and the transplantation of organs in animals, he received the 1912 Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology. Carrel's work with tissue culture also contributed significantly to the understanding of viruses and the preparation of vaccines. A member of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research for thirty-three years, Carrel was the first scientist working in the United States to receive the Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology. Early Success with Blood Vessel Sutures Despite Carrel's growing reputation as a surgeon, he failed to acquire a faculty position at the university. His colleagues seemed indifferent to his research, and Carrel, in turn, was critical of the French medical establishment. The final split between Carrel and his peers came when Carrel wrote a positive account of a miracle he apparently witnessed at Lourdes, a small town famous since 1858 for its Roman Catholic shrine and often visited by religious pilgrims. In his article, Carrel suggested that there may be medical cures that cannot be explained by science alone, and that further investigation into supernatural phenomena such as miracles was required. This conclusion pleased neither the scientists nor the churchmen of the day.

The French government called him to service with the army, assigning him to run a special hospital near the front lines for the study and prompt treatment of severely infected wounds. There, Madame Carrel, his wife of less than one year and a trained surgical nurse, assisted him. In collaboration with biochemist Henry D. Dakin, Carrel developed an elaborate method of cleansing deep wounds to prevent infection. The method was especially effective in preventing gangrene, and was credited with saving thousands of lives and limbs. The Carrel-Dakin method, however, was too complicated for widespread use, and has since been replaced by the use of antibiotic drugs. After an honorable discharge in 1919, Carrel returned to the Rockefeller Institute in New York City. He resumed his work in tissue culture, and began an investigation into the causes of cancer. In one experiment, he built a huge mouse colony to test his theories about the relationship between nutrition and cancer. But the experiment produced inconclusive results, and the Institute ceased funding it after 1933. Nevertheless, Carrel's tissue culture research was successful enough to earn him the Nordhoff-Jung Cancer Prize in 1931 for his contribution to the study of malignant tumors.

En 1905 se trasladó a Estados Unidos, donde trabajó en el Laboratorio Fisiológico de Hull (Chicago) y en 1906 se incorporó al Instituto Rockefeller de Investigaciones Médicas (Nueva York). Logró el trasplante de tejidos y órganos de un animal a otro y desarrolló un nuevo método de sutura de conductos sanguíneos, merecimientos por los cuales recibió en 1912 el premio Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina. En 1911 acometió importantes investigaciones sobre la forma de preservar la vida en medios fríos y el cultivo de tejidos vivos separados del cuerpo. En 1912 se entregó al cultivo de «un corazón de pollo», partiendo de diversos fragmentos de tejidos embrionarios que, al cabo de varias décadas, crecieron para convertirse en un órgano aislado vivo. Regresado a Francia durante la I Guerra Mundial, colaboró con Henry D. Dakin en el desarrollo de la solución antiséptica Carrel-Dakin para el tratamiento de heridas infectadas, preparado que se conoció más tarde con el nombre de «líquido de Dakin». Después de la guerra, dirigió sus investigaciones fundamentales al cultivo de tejidos y en 1935 atrajo la atención pública al anunciar la construcción, en colaboración con Charles A. Lindbergh, de un corazón mecánico que permitía conservar vivos los órganos del cuerpo en cámaras de cristal irrigadas por una corriente artificial de sangre. CARREL OF DISCONTENT by Sherwyn Warren, MD Delivered to The Chicago Literary Club November 8, 1999 In 1909, Dr. Karl Beck, professor of surgery at the University of Illinois, nominated Dr. Alexis Carrel for the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for work done at the Hull Laboratory of Physiology of the University of Chicago. Carrel, a surgeon, born and educated in Lyon, France, first saw Chicago in September, 1904. He described it as: "The big, dirty city. Heart rendering impression is the feverish activity of the crowds, Michigan Avenue, the Lake, the boulevards, the intersections, the terrible noise of the elevated metro; the mud, the dirtiness of the streets, the traffic, the big stores, high buildings, gray sky, dirty clouds, the heat and humidity." Carrel had left Lyon for Montreal in the spring of 1904, discouraged with his prospects for a surgical career in France and discontented with French medical politics. Pursuing the possibilities of life as a farmer or rancher, on August 10, he undertook a rail journey through western Canada and the United States. Thereby disenchanted with agriculture and husbandry, Carrel decided to stay in the big, dirty city. Two years of encouragement and opportunity at the University of Chicago was pivotal on his path to the Nobel Prize in 1912 and the century's most significant developments in surgery.
