Giosue Carducci: 19th Century Poet, Statesman and Satanist
by R. Merciless,
In 1906 the Nobel Prize for literature was awarded to Giosue Carducci of Italy for extraordinary lifelong accomplishment in the field of poetry. He was a Satanist. By the time he won the Nobel, Carducci had firmly established himself as one of the world’s most well-known and influential literary figures with a large body of distinguished work and a long career of artistic achievement, political activism and religious agitation. He had published several volumes of poetry attracting worldwide critical acclaim. In addition, his prose writings including literary criticism, biographies, speeches and essays filled some 20 volumes. He had also been elected a Senator of Italy and voted a very substantial life-long pension. The Nobel prize was merely the capstone of a long, brilliant and highly successful life. Carducci’s credentials as a Satanist include not only his worldly successes and overt opposition to Christianity but his writing of the highly controversial poem, Inno a Satana or “Hymn to Satan.” In writing, publicly reciting and twice publishing this astounding poem, he stepped firmly beyond his paganism and even his anti-clericalism into the realm of modern Satanism by embracing the mythic character of Satan as an exemplary role model and heroic archetypal symbol. Indeed, it is this taking of Satan as an exemplar symbol that is the defining characteristic of the Modern Satanist.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
(Redirected from Giosue Carducci Giosu¨ Carducci July 27 – near Lucca February 16 ) was an Italian poet, one of Italy's greatest, and a teacher. He was very influential and was regarded as the unofficial national poet of modern Italy He was born in Val di Castello , a small town in the northwest corner of Tuscany near Pisa . His father, a doctor, was an advocate of the unification of Italy. Because of his politics, the family was forced to move several times during Giosu¨'s childhood, eventually settling for a few years in Florence Homer 's Iliad into Italian. He received his Ph.D. in from the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and began teaching school. The following year, he published his first collection of poems, Rime . These were difficult years for Carducci; his father died, and his brother committed suicide. In 1859, he married Elvira Menicucci, and they had four children. He briefly taught Greek at a high school in Pistoia, and then was appointed Italian professor at the university in Bologna . He was a popular lecturer and a fierce critic. His political views were mercurial and alternated between pro- and anti-republicanism. He was the first Italian to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in . Although his reputation rests primarily on his poetry, he also produced a large body of prose works.

(1835-1907) was born in Val di Castello, a small town near Pisa. He was early attracted to the Greek and Roman authors; in addition, he conscientiously studied the Italian classics: Dante, Tasso, and Alfieri. At the age of twenty he graduated with a degree in philosophy and letters from the University of Pisa. After several difficult years in which he taught in various high schools, he was appointed to the chair of Italian Literature at the University of Bologna, a post that he held until his retirement in 1904.
Inspired both by his own time as well as by his study of the classical and Italian poets, Carducci began writing poetry when he was a child. The first two collections of his poetry were Rime Rhymes ] and Levia Gravia Light and Heavy ]. Both reveal his enthusiasm for and imitation of the ancients as well as a strong revolutionary tendency. Inno a Satana Hymn to Satan Giambi ed epodi Iambics and Epodes ], a collection of satiric poems of a political nature, expresses Carducci's indignation with his compatriots. In the Nuove poesie New Poems ] end the three collections of Odi barbare (1877, 1882, and 1889) [

Feb. 16, 1907, Bologna, Italy), Italian poet, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1906, and one of the most influential literary figures of his age. The son of a republican country doctor, Carducci spent his childhood in the wild Maremma region of southern Tuscany. He studied at the University of Pisa and in 1860 became professor of Italian literature at Bologna, where he lectured for more than 40 years. He was made a senator for life in 1890 and was revered by the Italians as a national poet. In his youth Carducci was the centre of a group of young men determined to overthrow the prevailing Romanticism and to return to classical models. Giuseppe Parini, Vincenzo Monti, and Ugo Foscolo were his masters, and their influence is evident in his first books of poems ( Rime, 1857; later collected in Juvenilia [1880] and Levia gravia [1868; "Light and Serious Poems"]). He showed both his great power as a poet and the strength of his republican, anticlerical feeling in his hymn to Satan
