C. Die Partei setzt ihn ein, um im arabischen Bevölkerungsteil der Stadt antikolonialistische Agitation zu betreiben und auch Mitglieder zu werben. Letzteres erweist sich zwar als unmöglich (weil der kommunistische Atheismus die Moslems abstößt), doch erhält Camus Einblick in die sozialen und psychologischen Probleme der damals etwa 8 Millionen "Araber", die beherrscht und ausgebeutet werden von etwa 800.000 Algerienfranzosen, d.h. den Nachkommen französischer, spanischer und italienischer Einwanderer sowie der französisierten einheimischen Juden (wobei diese Algerienfranzosen, "les pieds noirs", keineswegs allesamt wohlhabend sind). Als 1936 die Volksfront die Wahlen gewinnt, werden in ganz Frankreich neue kulturvermittelnde Institutionen gegründet, um das Bildungsniveau der "Werktätigen" zu heben. In Algier gründet Camus mit anderen Linken ein "Théâtre du travail", wo er ein erstes Stück redigiert und inszeniert:

Escritor y filósofo, nacido en Mondovi, (actualmente Drean, Argelia), el 7 de noviembre de 1913 es uno de los exponentes del existencialismo francés. Estudia en la universidad de Argel, donde sus estudios se interrumpen pronto debido a una tuberculosis, trabaja como periodista en el Alger-Republicain, primero, y luego, trasladado a Francia en 1940, en el Paris-soir. Durante la guerra, combatió en la resistencia y, a partir de 1943, dirigió Combat, órgano clandestino de la misma. Su novela El extranjero (1942), en la que presenta el tema favorito de sus escritos, lo absurdo de la vida humana, le lanza a la fama. En El mito de Sísifo. Ensayo sobre el absurdo (1943), repite temática, reelaborándola en un ensayo ya filosófico. Expone en esta obra su “filosofía del absurdo” - “juzgo que la noción de lo absurdo es esencial y puede figurar como la primera de mis verdades” - tema central en toda su obra: el absurdo nace de la confrontación entre la experiencia del mundo y el “deseo desenfrenado de claridad”. El suicidio no puede ser la salida de este absurdo, ya sea el suicidio corporal que elimina la conciencia, ya sea el suicidio moral del hombre con el sometimiento al absoluto irracional, en la filosofía, o al consuelo y la esperanza que ofrece la religión. Albert Camus Philosopher of the Absurd Jim Marshall The Auckland University - New Zealand Albert Camus (1913-1960), novelist, dramatist, philosopher, essayist, was born in Algeria on 7 November, 1913. His mother was Spanish and his Breton father was killed in World War I in 1914. Camus was raised and studied under difficult but reasonably happy circumstances: "though I was born poor, I was born under a happy sky in a natural setting with which one feels in union, unalienated". Initially a journalist in Algiers, and later in Paris, he was Editor of Combat, the underground resistance newspaper from 1942 to 1946. Camus, like his friends Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, was then an active member of the resistance. He was but 46 when he was killed instantly in a road accident in January 1960, having been offered a lift back to Paris by a close friend (Roger Gallimard, the publisher, who later died of injuries sustained in the crash). The Nobel prize for literature was awarded to Camus in 1957. In Le Myth de Sisyphe absurdity is a sensation or feeling, which seizes us suddenly. It is at the base of thought and action, even though it is indeterminate and confused and, if present, it is distant in time. Time is our worst enemy, causing us to place ourselves in time, and live with the future in mind – we are ardent for tomorrow – even though much of life is mechanical repetition. Faced by the absurdity of life consciousness becomes crucial to Camus’ thought – it is the only good and the real good. It permits one to discern meaning and, as the world has no meaning, it is ultimately absurd (though it is the relationship between consciousness and the world which is said to be absurd).
