Or search the encyclopaedia: Camus, Albert Algerian-born French writer. His works, such as the novels (1942) and La Peste/The Plague (1948), owe much to existentialism in their emphasis on the absurdity and arbitrariness of life. Other works include Le Mythe de Sisyphe/The Myth of Sisyphus (1943) and The plays Le Malentendu/Cross Purpose and Caligula (both 1944), and the novel Le Mythe de Sisyphe is a philosophical treatment of the same concept. With La Peste , the play (1948), and , Camus moved away from metaphysical alienation and began to explore the problem of suffering in its more historical manifestations, and the concept of revolt.

In early 1995, I began surfing the 'net. Much to my surprise, I found no pages listed in any of the major web indexes at the time dedicated to the works of Albert Camus. I decided someone needed to create a page to link bits of information together. I don't claim to be an expert, and I haven't read much Camus since then, but this page carries on. Every time I think I'll pull it down, I check the stats and see that more than 7,000 people a month are clicking through this page, so I keep it here. Biography Born: November 7, 1913 in Mondovi, Algeria
Died: January 4, 1960 in an automobile accident After winning a degree in philosophy, he worked at various jobs, ending up in journalism. In the 1930s, he ran a theatrical company, and during WWII was active in the French Resistance, editing an important underground paper, Combat Albert Camus won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957 "for his important literary production, which with clear-sighted earnestness illuminates the problems of the human conscience in our times". Check out the Nobel site for a copy of his acceptance speech, an in-depth biography, and other information.

On this day in 1960 Albert Camus was killed in a car crash outside Paris, at the age of forty-seven. The incomplete manuscript of The First Man , the autobiographical novel that Camus was working on at his death, was found in the mud at the accident site and published by his daughter in 1995. Camus hoped that it would be his masterpiece and some critics think it is, even unfinished. Albert Camus, The Outsider
Camus' first and most famous novel L'Etranger , translated as The Stranger , or The Outsider , was published on May 19th, 1942, the same year as the movie Casablanca was released. Camus, like Rick, helped with the Resistance movement, and many photographs show him looking like Humphrey Bogart; his book became a cult-classic too, and the best-selling French novel of the 20th century.

Albert Camus L'Envers et L'endroit , which would constitute Camus' first experience of writing for theatre. They also produced plays by Malraux, Synge, Gide and Dostoevski. The theatre company was intended to produce socialist plays specifically for the audience of Algerian workers. In 1938 Camus became a journalist for an anti-colonialist newspaper called the Alger-Republicain. He reported specifically on the state of the Muslims of the Kabylie region, attracting public notice and finally rousing the Algerian government to take action. Abridged versions of these articles were published again much later in Actuelles III Camus left Algiers in 1940 for Paris, hoping to work as a reporter for the leftist press. This same year the German army invaded France, so he returned to North Africa. He found a teaching position in Oran, and was married for his second time to Francine Faure, a mathematics instructor. Camus was a self-proclaimed pacifist, writing openly against war in Europe, and this put him in danger at this time due to the political right's rise in power in both France and Algeria. His stay in Oran was short-lived, as he was "advised" to leave Algeria in March 1940, having been declared a "threat to national security". During the war, Camus published a number of works which have become associated with his doctrine of the absurd: his idea it is impossible to make rational sense of one's experience, and human life is made meaningless by mortality. He writes: "This heart within me I can feel, and I judge that it exists. This world I can touch, and I likewise judge that it exists. There ends all my knowledge, and the rest is construction." The novel

Camus, Albert The Plague
Genre Novel Keywords Epidemics Freedom History of Medicine Individuality ... Time Summary One April morning in the 1940's in Oran, Algeria, Dr. Rieux, preoccupied with his ill wife's imminent departure to a sanatorium, discovers a dead rat. This unusual event marks the beginning of an epidemic of bubonic plague that will besiege the city until the following February. Over the long ten months Rieux, his acquaintances, friends, colleagues and fellow citizens labor, each in his own way, with the individual and social transformations caused by the all-consuming illness. Separation, isolation, and penury become the common lot of distinct characters whose actions, thoughts and feelings constitute a dynamic tableau of man imprisoned. Commentary As the epigraph makes clear, imprisonment by the plague is a metaphor for other forms of occupation. Nonetheless, the impact of the epidemic is fully rendered, including in comparison to other historic plagues. Together, the epigraph and the body of the novel invite a discussion of literary theories of representation, and particularly, because of the subject matter and its treatment, of the representation of illness and related topics.
