Where Has All The Water Gone?
University of Arizona
April 24, 2002
Drainage plan keeps our campus safe from flooding Taco Bell at Water’s Edge
By Chris Morrison Have you thought about where our rainwater goes after a much needed rain? Would you believe that Taco Bell has something to do with its final destination? Here on our desert campus it is sometimes hard to think about water volume and the potential for flooding. We don’t get many rains, but when they finally arrive, we do see substantial amounts of water in a short amount of time. Much of the campus and the city of Tucson are covered with concrete and rooftops. This makes flooding a problem now that the soil is no longer exposed to soak in our rains. This creates small ponds and rivers that collect and flow through our campus. Now imagine a record setting 100-year flood. The same water that puddles in front of your house or dorm, now has headed into your doorway flooding your belongings. It could become a disastrous problem to the University with equipment losses and remodeling costs, not to mention student property damage. Don’t worry, a plan has been established to prepare for this record flood and protect our campus.

Melvin Calvin was born on April 8, 1911, in St. Paul, Minnesota . Calvin first studied at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1931. He then attended the University of Minnesota and received his Ph.D. in chemistry in 1935. In 1937, Calvin moved to California , where he studied and taught at the University of California at Berkley, advancing to Professor of Chemistry in 1947. He was again promoted by the university in 1963 to Professor of Molecular Biology. It was at the University of California that he founded the Laboratory of Chemical Biodynamics and assumed to the position of Director of Berkley Radiation Laboratory. It was in the latter, that Calvin completed much of his indepth research on chemical processes of photosynthesis. Time magazine. Calvin was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1961 for his discovery along with Adam Benson, of the Calvin cycle or the carbon movements through a plant. He acted on many different committees and academies overseeing the continuous research in science. Some of these committies include the Science Advisory Committee under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. Calvin was also elected to the National Academy of Science.

Melvin Calvin
Born 8 Apr 1911; died 8 Jan 1997
Melvin Calvin was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. His parents were Russian immigrants. He went straight from his first science degree to a doctorate and then on to a career in scientific research. He began his most famous work on photosynthesis at the end of the Second World War. The story is that on the day the Japanese surrendered after the dropping of the two atom bombs, Earnest Lawrence told the 34 year old Calvin that it was 'time to do something useful' with all the radioactive carbon-14 he had discovered how to make during the war years. Calvin set up a team of young scientists - at 34 he was about the oldest - and for the first time he got together biologists, chemists and physicists who all worked together contributing different skills to the research. Calvin decided to use carbon-14 isotope as a tracer in the reactions of photosynthesis. It was a very difficult process, because the reactions had to be carried out in living cells. The radioactive tracer in the form of labelled carbon dioxide was given to the plants for a brief time. The plant cells were then killed at various intervals after the labelled gas was given and the labelled chemicals identified. It took years, but eventually Calvin and his team mapped the complete route that carbon travels through a plant during photosynthesis, starting from its absorption as atmospheric carbon dioxide to its conversion into carbohydrates and other organic compounds. The sequence of reactions are called the

MELVIN CALVIN died in Berkeley on January 8, 1997, at the age of eighty-five from a heart attack following years of declining health. He was widely known for his mental intensity, skill in asking questions, and impressive presentation of his research and ideas. During the period 1946-57 Calvin directed laboratories utilizing radiocarbon-14 and other radioisotopes in the University of California's Radiation Laboratory, founded by Ernest Orlando Lawrence. Among his achievements was the delineation of the path of carbon in photosynthesis, for which he was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1961. He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1954. Among his many honors were the Priestley Medal of the American Chemical Society in 1978, the U.S. National Medal of Science in 1989, and the Davy Medal of the Royal Society in 1964. Born in St. Paul, Minnesota, Melvin Calvin was the son of a Lithuanian immigrant father and a mother from Russian Georgia; they ran a small grocery store in Detroit, where young Melvin helped while going to Central High School. He became intrigued by the products on sale in the store, began to wonder what they were made of, and early on recognized the importance of chemistry in their makeup. Deciding to be a chemist, Melvin received his B.S. in 1931 at the Michigan College of Science and Technology (now Michigan Technological University), where he was the college's first chemistry major. He went on to take a Ph.D. with George C. Glockler at the University of Minnesota in 1935.

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Melvin Calvin The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1961 Melvin Calvin was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, April 8, 1911, of Russian emigrant parents. He received the B.S. degree in Chemistry in 1931 at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology, and the Ph. D. degree in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota in 1935. He has served as director of the big-organic chemistry group in the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory since 1946. This group became the Laboratory of Chemical Biodynamics in 1960. His scientific life began with a thesis on the electron affinity of halogens, done under the direction of Professor George A. Glocker at the University of Minnesota and completed in 1935. The following two-year postdoctoral period was spent with Professor Michael Polanyi at the University of Manchester, at which time his interest in coordination catalysis, particularly metallorporphyrins, was awakened. This interest is still paramount and has resulted both in theoretical and practical applications. He has been the recipient of a number of medals, awards, and lectureships, and holds membership in numerous learned societies. In addition, he has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, that American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Royal Society of London, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and Letters, and the German Academy of Scientists, Leopoldina. He holds honorary D. Sc. degrees from Michigan College of Mining and Technology, the University of Nottingham, Oxford University, and Northwestern University.

"That got us into some pretty heavy molecular biology,” Bosma said, “a lot of which I had to learn as we went along. What we found is that the scid mutation crippled a gene that lymphocytes use to make receptors that recognize anything foreign to the body.” Go To
