A daring youngster and regular student, Cajal graduated in Medicine from the University of Zaragoza and worked with his father in the Anatomy department. Having been a military doctor in Cuba, he gained his doctorate and came into contact with Histology. After a short time in Valencia, he achieved the professorship of Histology of the University of Barcelona, and here he developed the first stage of his scientific work, where he managed to demonstrate the independence of the nerve cells and described the microscopic structure of the multiple nerve portions (marrow, cerebellum, retina, etc.) 1884 gave forth the first issue of his Histology Manual, together with various studies on tissues. A year later, following Jaime Ferrán's cholera vaccine, Ramón y Cajal took the opportunity to go further into bacteriological issues. His wish was to devote himself to these studies, but the research instruments were too costly for Spanish laboratories. From 1887 he worked almost exclusively on neurohistology. From 1892 he was the head professor for Histology of the University of Madrid, a post he held until he retired. At the beginning of the new century, in 1901, Ramón y Cajal was designated to run the Biological research Laboratory, where he laid the cornerstone to what would later be the Instituto Ramón y Cajal. At this time, Ramón y Cajal was one of the most famous members of the scientific world and had received a large number of international distinctions and awards. In the nineties he had encouraged Spanish researchers to open to foreign influences. One of the first distinctions he received from the scientific world was the Moscow medal (1900); the maximum recognition of his work would come with the Nobel Prize with Camilo Golgi, in 1906; in 1907 he was elected President of the Board for the Expansion of Scientific Studies and Research and in 1922 he was awarded the Echegaray medal. Santiago Ramón y Cajal died in Madrid in 1934, after a whole life dedicated to research.

Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852–1934)

BACK TO ANCESTORS OF SCIENCE S antiago Ramón y Cajal was born on 1 May 1852, in Petilla de Aragón, Spain. The Spanish histologist is regarded as the father of neuroscience because of his groundbreaking studies on the nervous system. Originally, Ramón y Cajal wanted to be an artist; however, he studied under his fathera professor of applied anatomy at the University of Zaragozaand earned a medical degree in 1873. From 1874 to 1875, Ramón y Cajal served as an army doctor in Cuba. Upon his return, he became an assistant in the Faculty of Medicine at Zaragoza, working with his father in the School of Anatomy. In 1879 he was appointed as the Director of the Zaragoza Museum. Thereafter, Ramón y Cajal accepted appointments at the universities of Valencia (1883), Barcelona (1887), and Madrid (1892), where he accepted the Chair of Histology. In 1900, he was appointed Director of the Instituto Nacional de Higiene and a year later the Laboratorio de Investigaciones Biológicas, which became the Instituto Ramón y Cajal. He served there until his death on 17 October 1934. During the early 1880s, Ramón y Cajal immersed himself in researching microbiology to help Valencia recover from a cholera epidemic. It wasn’t until he arrived at the University of Barcelona that he conducted his famous research on the nervous system. He distinguished individual nervous system cells (neurons) and established their polarized nature; he illustrated how nerve impulses were transmitted from the dendrites (primary entry points) to the axon (terminal nerve fiber). He also improved on Camillo Golgi's silver nitrate stain (1903) and later developed a gold stain (1913) for studying the structure of central nervous tissues of embryos and young animals. These neuron-specific stains enabled Ramón y Cajal to trace neural structures and connections. Thus, Ramón y Cajal proved that the neuron is the basic unit in the nervous systemnot an undifferentiated mass, as espoused by the reticular theoryand provided a modern understanding of the nerve impulse.

, (1852-1934), Spain, Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology, 1906. Santiago Ramón y Cajal was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work on the structure of the nervous system. His major contributions were in adapting Golgi's silver nitrate staining techniques to thick sections of embryonic material, in formulating theories of nervous system structure and nerve impulse transmission, and in explaining the areas of traumatic degeneration and regeneration of nervous structures. He was also a notable author and Spanish statesman, always concerned about the status of Spain and the Spanish language.

A partir de entonces los premios, reconocimientos y distinciones nacionales e internacionales se suceden año tras año. Sobreponiéndose a todo ello, Cajal mantiene siempre su dedicación constante a la investigación y a la formación de sus continuadores. Each man is the sculptor of his own brain. (Ramon y Cajal)
A practical book: "Advice for a Young Investigator"

Recently, I sent this book as a Christmas present to some friends, so I had a good excuse to read it again. I found the reading, once more, full of intriguing suggestions. One of them was especially interesting:
"... if the young... has created his own laboratory where he tries to improve his technical skills... then the professor must intervene with determination to support him."
The economic cost of the creation of a laboratory dedicated to Clinical Neurophysiology
Ramon y Cajal had a very practical mind, so he analyzed the cost of a laboratory on Botanic, Biology, Physics..., detailing the main acquisitions that should be included. Certainly, the estimated cost of a "home laboratory" is difficult to translate to present currencies and I know almost nothing on these fields, but, following his steps, I would like to detail the cost of a domestic laboratory on Clinical Neurophysiology nowadays.
Basically, the next elements would be needed:

Santiago Ramón y Cajal
Spain is very proud of Nobel laureate Ramón y Cajal. He was closely associated with the Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid, where I lived. His death in 1934 was a day of national mourning. He was important not only as a neuroscientist but as an educational leader, and indeed as a man of letters. He was elected to the Academy of Sciences. I cannot evaluate his work as a scientist, but I certainly can as a writer.
As a devotee of faction, of which biography and autobiography are important elements, I gave courses on them regularly at Stanford. One of my favorite books was Santiago Ramón y Cajal's Mi infancia y juventud , in which he tells the remarkable story of his early life. Born in an Aragonese village, he was a young trouble-maker, landing once in jail. He studied medicine at the University of Saragossa, the state of which may be judged from the fact that anatomy was taught with cardboard skeletons.
He was sent to Cuba to fight in the 1898 war. He gives an account of the experiences of a Spanish common soldier. Americans know the war only from the American viewpoint. Few know anything about the Cuban viewpoint, and virtually none have any idea of the Spanish experience, which led to the important Generation of '98. The war wounded the Spanish psyche, and this must be born in mind today. (See the accompanying posting on the visit of King Juan Carlos to Cuba).
He told the later story of his life in his two-volume memoirs and in his account of his view of life at age 80. He was born in 1851, so he was 80 in 1931, just the year the monarchy was overthrown and Ramón y Cajal's liberal friends came to power. He wrote stories and a book about

Biography: Santiago Ramón y Cajal
Nobel Laureate (Medicine, 1906) Santiago Ramón y Cajal was born on March 1, 1852, at Petilla in Aragon, Spain. As a boy he was apprenticed first to a barber and then to a cobbler. He himself wished to be an artist - his gift for draftsmanship is evident in his published works. His father, however, who was Professor of Applied Anatomy in the University of Zaragoza, persuaded him to study medicine, which he did, chiefly under the direction of his father. (Later, he made drawings for an atlas of anatomy which his father was preparing, but which was never published.) In 1873 he took his Licentiate in Medicine at Zaragoza and served, after a competitive examination, as an army doctor. He took part in an expedition to Cuba in 1874-75, where he contracted malaria and tuberculosis. On his return he became an assistant in the School of Anatomy in the Faculty of Medicine at Zaragoza (1875) and then, at his own request, Director of the Zaragoza Museum (1879). On December 6, 1883 he obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine at Madrid, after having been the day before unanimously nominated Professor of Descriptive and General Anatomy at Valencia. In 1887, after an examination, he was nominated Professor of Histology and Pathological Anatomy at Barcelona and in 1892 he was appointed to the same Chair at Madrid. In 1902 he was appointed Director of the "Investigaciones Biológica" and of the "Instituto Nacional de Higiene."
