Samen met de Britse wetenschapper Sir Peter Medawar ontving hij in 1960 de Nobelprijs voor Medicijnen als erkenning voor zijn ontdekkingen over immunologische tolerantie. Burnet werd geboren in Traralgon, Victoria en genoot zijn opleiding aan de universiteit van Melbourne. Hij werd benoemd tot patholoog in het ziekenhuis Royal Melbourne. In 1926 ging hij naar Londen om een jaar te studeren aan het Lister Instituut voor Preventieve Medicijnen. In deze tijd haalde hij ook een graad aan de universiteit van Londen. Week in Photos Search the Globe: Today Yesterday SIR MACFARLANE BURNET, AT 85; WON NOBEL FOR MEDICINE IN '60 Author: Associated Press Date: Tuesday, September 3, 1985 Page: Section: OBITUARY Sir MacFarlane Burnet, Australia's only Nobel laureate for medicine, has died at his son's home in Port Fairy, western Victoria. He was 85. Sir MacFarlane, who died Saturday, was born Frank MacFarlane Burnet in Traralgon, eastern Victoria, the second of six children. He won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1960 for his work in immunology. Sir MacFarlane studied the nature of antibody formation and immune processes and developed the notion of immunological tolerance to explain why humans do not form antibodies to their own bodily constituents. He also wrote about how mistakes of the immune system might cause obscure forms of blood, liver and kidney disease. From the early 1930s to the late 1950s, Sir MacFarlane was a leader in the science of virology, pioneering the use of fertile hen's eggs as hosts for virus multiplication. He developed concepts that are part of the basis for current theories about viruses as cancer-causing agents. At age 14, Sir MacFarlane went to Geelong College, and won a residential scholarship to Melbourne University's Ormond College. He graduated second in his class.

The exhibition brought together portraits and personal memorabilia from the lives of three of Australia's most remarkable scientists - Frank Macfarlane Burnet, Jean Macnamara and Ian Clunies Ross - all born in 1899. A Broader Vision: Macfarlane Burnet, Jean Macnamara, Ian Clunies Ross was mounted in partnership with the Tall Poppy Program of the Australian Institute of Political Science. In different ways each contributed to our collective knowledge of science, tackled wider social issues, and showed it was possible to have an international 'voice' while based in Australia. Macfarlane Burnet spent his childhood in Terang, where his early drawings and notes on beetles hinted at his budding skills in the observation of nature.
