Ralph Bunche
by Mary-Ossei Anto The name of Ralph Bunche is unfamiliar in too many textbooks.
He is a hero of world peace and, in actuality, devised and implemented
the mediation principles that now govern all UN peacekeeping efforts. Born in 1903 into a poor, black family in Detroit, Michigan, Ralph Bunche became an ambitious individual, a scholar on racism, a skilled diplomat and tireless peacemaker and humanitarian. He co-authored an important book on racism, fought against all forms of hatred, and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1950. He was Undersecretary-General of the United Nations; negotiated four peace agreements that ended the 1948-49 Arab-Israeli War; and was responsible for the first UN program on peaceful uses of nuclear energy. Indeed, Ralph Bunche was a man who rose from modest circumstances to become the foremost international mediator and peacekeeper of his time. This is his inspiring story. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. And Dr. Ralph J. Bunche:
Nobel Peace Prize Winners Whose Paths Converge

    by Keith Beauchamp
The Nobel Peace Prize is an international award given yearly since 1901 for achievements in peace. The prize, which includes about $1.3 million, a gold medal, and a diploma, is presented on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, its founder. Dr. Ralph J. Bunche was the first African American to win the Nobel Peace Prize, in 1950. Fourteen years later, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was the second, the youngest person thus far to receive the Peace Prize. As Peace Laureates, they are on a list of organizations and people that includes Theodore Roosevelt, 1906; Woodrow Wilson, 1910; Mother Teresa, 1979; Desmond Tutu, 1987; Nelson Mandela, 1993; and Jimmie Carter, 2002. Certainly the life of Dr. Bunche demonstrates that no African American of the 20 th century, however prominent, escaped the racial forces shaping the United States, forces that led to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. But why is Dr. King revered and Dr. Bunche all but forgotten?

February 26, 2004 Thank you very much, Ambassador Gates-Lynch. As your honorary chair tonight, I must say that the honor is, indeed, all mine. I am delighted to participate in this tribute to excellence in diplomacy. And, indeed, to recognize the tradition of excellence long sustained by the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training, the State Department’s accomplice in promoting the practice and the people of America’s foreign policy. Of course, I am particularly honored to present tonight the Ralph J. Bunche Award to my friend, Mr. John Whitehead. He may be a tennis player rather than a weight lifter, but he is without question a giant among Deputy Secretaries of State. I also wanted to take a moment to congratulate the other two awardees tonight. J. Bruce Llewellyn, who shares the habit of high achievement and public service with a certain cousin of his, Secretary of State Colin Powell. And Mr. Secretary, Mrs. Powell, thank you for honoring us with your presence tonight. Mr. Kennedy, I’d also like to honor you and to let you know that I intend to put your oral history project to good use this evening. We come together in appreciation of these three people, but we also come together in celebration of the life of one of the 20

    Dr. Ralph J. Bunche biography
Biography of Ralph J. Bunch, first African American to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, Undersecretary of the United Nations, and peace negotiator for world crises in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
Ralph Johnson Bunche was born on August 7, 1904 in Detroit, Michigan. Bunche's family was poor and his father moved from city to city looking for work. Ralph attended Barstow School in Toledo, Ohio and sold newspapers to add to the family income. Bunche would later recall that, "My childhood days were poor days, but happy ones and filled with music." Ralph's mother died when he was thirteen years old, after which his maternal grandmother reared him. Ralph attended Jefferson High School in Los Angeles. He experienced racial prejudice when he was not allowed admittance to the Ephebain Socity, the citywide honor society. He was so upset that he wanted to quit school. He did not quit and graduated from high school in 1922 with academic honors. Ralph's grandmother encouraged him to continue his education. After graduation, he entered the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). At college Ralph participated in athletic and social activities. He was on the staff of the college newspaper, the "Daily Bruin," and sports editor of the college yearbook. Although he worked part-time jobs to help pay for his college expenses, he excelled in his subjects. He majored in political science and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, the most prestigious honor society in the U.S. In 1927, Bunche graduated from UCLA with the highest honors.
