Pearl Sydenstricker Buck was a well-known defender of human rights throughout her life. Whenever she found injustice, she stood up for the rights of the oppressed. To understand her views it is important to look at her life and how her character and mind were shaped as a young person.
Early Childhood Pearl was born in America, but because she moved to China as a baby she experienced life first as a minority. It was different there because the attitude towards other races and cultures contrasted greatly with the opinions held elsewhere, especially in the United States. Even though she was a minority the Chinese philosophy was that one should “judge a man or a woman by character and intelligence rather than by race”(Buck, My Several Worlds , 20). From her parents she learned that one should live life through love and brotherhood. It was with these kinds of ideals that Pearl grew up. Another factor from her youth was that she was exposed to so many different cultures coexisting peacefully. The family physician and his wife were from India, so she was privy to stories and beliefs from there. As neighbors they had a Japanese lady and her English husband, from whom she learned about Japan. After she stayed there, Japan became what she considered to be her third country. The family also had friends from the Philippines, Siam, Burma, and Korea who were all “friendly and ready to be visited.” Then there were also the numerous and friendly Chinese friends. They welcomed these foreigners into their homes and took an interest in, and accepted their differences. In turn, her parents welcomed the Chinese into their home, inviting them to supper, or even spend the night. Pearl also had a Chinese adopted sister whose children she would play with (Buck

Biographical Information
East Wind, West Wind was published in 1930, while she was still living in China. She followed that book with the Chronicles of the Family Wang, The Good Earth Sons (1932), and A House Divided (1935). It was The Good Earth that first brought Pearl Buck to the attention of the world, winning her the Pulitzer Prize and the William Dean Howell Medal. After her divorce in 1935 from John Buck, Pearl married her publisher, Richard Walsh, and the couple moved to Green Hills Farm in Bucks County, PA. From here, Pearl Buck would write more than 100 more books before her death in 1973. Her work brought numerous awards and recognitions, including the honor of becoming the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature (1938). Pearl Buck was more than just an author, even a great one, though. In her lifetime, she was recognized as a noted humanitarian, particularly concerned with the rights of women and children. She founded Welcome House, Inc., an international agency set up to promote the adoption of Asian-American children, now part of the Pearl S. Buck International Foundation, an organization "committed to making the world a more humane place for its children by promoting the appreciation and understanding of other cultures through education, adoption, and support." She used her work to bring attention to the inferior status of women in traditional China. Because of her experiences with her daughter Carol, whose story is told in

Randolph-Macon Women's College, 1914. Pearl Buck was awarded the 1938 Nobel Prize in Literature. Until 1924 she lived principally in China, where she, her parents, and her first husband, John Lossing Buck, were missionaries. She is famous for vivid, compassionate novels about life in China. The Good Earth (1931; Pulitzer Prize), considered her finest work, describes a Chinese peasant's rise to wealth and brilliantly conveys a sense of the daily life of ordinary Chinese people. Among her other novels of China are East Wind: West Wind Dragon Seed Imperial Woman (1956), and Mandala (1971). In 1935, she married her publisher Richard J. Walsh, president of the John Day Company. In 1949 she founded Welcome House, which provided care for the children of Asian women and American soldiers; the Pearl Buck Foundation of Philadelphia, to which she consigned most of her royalties, aids in the adoption of Amerasian children. Introduction
Print Preview of Section Buck, Pearl (1892-1973), American novelist, best known for her sympathetic portrayals of peasant life in China. Her residence in China, her study of classics of Chinese literature , and her understanding of Chinese character enabled her to make Chinese civilization understandable and significant to Western readers. Buck’s novel The Good Earth (1931) was the first widely read book to describe Chinese culture with accuracy and sympathetic insight. For her achievement she became, in 1938, the first American woman to win the Nobel Prize for literature. Buck’s interests extended beyond writing about the Chinese to active welfare work on behalf of children of Asian American ancestry.

Customer Rating: Review Summary: Insightful and romantic... Review: This was a quick and easy read told in the first person through the eyes of a Chinese woman. Also it's clear that the writer's own loyalty to the Western thought of romantic love is all over this story. It is this notion that ultimately drives the narrator to give up her old ways and accept the new. Buck describes how difficult it is for one to accept change in age-old rituals. Although many of the traditions are seen as unnecessary, foolish or just plain sadistic, it's difficult to question them after growing up in a culture where these traditions have been practiced for thousands of years. The narrator is a good vehicle to show how upsetting, confusing and frustrating it can be to incorporate these changes into one's life. Time and time again the theme of the generation gap is revealed, showing how many people simply cannot be changed.

Customer Rating: Review Summary: A family divided by the Cultural Revolution Review: "The Three Daughters of Madame Liang" was Pearl S. Buck's last major novel and it holds its own with the best of her work. In Madame Liang, Buck has created a fascinating character, a woman who is very much her own person. After doing the very un-Chinese thing of leaving her husband when he takes a concubine, which he claims is his right because his wife has produced no son, Madame Liang determines to make her own way in the world and opens a gourmet restaurant that caters to the high and mighty of the People's Republic (even good Communists appreciate good food). She has not only survived, but thrived, by keeping a low profile and providing her customers with the best. But she has sent her three daughters, Grace, Mercy and Joy, to America to be educated; and now, after many years separation, Grace has been called home by her government to serve the new society.
