My parents, Charles Brovarnik and Pearl Gorinstein, were born in Zhitomir in the Ukraine and came to London in 1908 as part of the vast Jewish immigration in the early part of this century. They were married in London. In 1909 my sister, Ann, was born. I arrived on May 22, 1912. In June 1914 my father decided to join his mother and father and other members of his family in Chicago, much to the dismay of my mother, whose own family largely remained in England. My grandfather's name had been anglicized to Brown, and that became our name. In the United States, my two sisters, Sophie and Riva, were born in 1916 and 1918.
My father had been trained as a cabinet maker, doing delicate inlaid work. However, he found little market for his skills in the U.S. and turned to carpentry.
The Depression of 1920 persuaded him to go into business and he opened a small hardware store in Chicago at 18th and State Street, largely a black neighborhood. We lived in an apartment above the store and I attended the Haven School at Wabash and 16th Street with predominantly black classmates.
I did well in school and was advanced several times, graduating at 12. Indeed, I was offered, but refused, further advancement since I did not want to be in the same class with my sister, Ann.

Brown, Herbert Charles,
original name HERBERT BROVARNIK (b. May 22, 1912, London, Eng.), American chemist whose pioneering work with inorganic and organic boron compounds won him (along with Georg Wittig ) the 1979 Nobel Prize for Chemistry Brought to the United States in 1914 by his Ukrainian-born parents, Brown grew up in Chicago and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1936. He received his doctorate in 1938 and remained at Chicago as an instructor until 1943. He taught at Wayne State University in Detroit from 1943 to 1947 and at Purdue University from 1947, becoming Wetherill distinguished professor there in 1959 and emeritus in 1978. Brown's work with borohydrides led to the development of an important new class of inorganic reagents. His discovery of the organoboranes revealed an array of powerful and versatile reagents for organic synthesis. He was also known for studies of reactions involving so-called carbonium ions or carbo-cations. Brown was the author of Hydroboration (1962) and Organic Syntheses via Boranes

Unfortunately, my father became ill of some sort of infection and died in 1926. I left school to work in our store. I am afraid that I was not really interested in the business and spent most of my time reading. My mother finally decided that she would attend the store and I should go back to school. Accordingly, I reentered Englewood in February 1929 and graduated in 1930. At Englewood I ran the humor column of the school paper and won a national prize. I never recovered. We sold the store at that time. I had no hope of going on to college. However, this was the beginning of the Depression and I could find no permanent job. Studying appealed to me much more than the odd jobs I could find. I decided to go to college. I entered college intending to major in electrical engineering. I had heard that one could make a good living in that area.

Nobel laureate Herbert C. Brown will give the third annual Joseph F. Bunnett Research Organic Chemistry Lecture at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 2, in the University Center. Brown's talk, entitled "The Discovery and Exploration of a New Continent of Organic Chemistry," is free and open to the public. Herbert C. Brown shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with German chemist Georg Wittig of the University of Heidelberg. Photo courtesy Purdue University The R. B. Wetherill Research Professor Emeritus of chemistry at Purdue University, Brown is most famous for his pioneering work with boron compounds, which revolutionized synthetic organic chemistry.
While working for the Department of Defense during World War II, Brown found a way to make sodium borohydride. This compound opened a new path for making hydrogen gas, used in weather balloons during the war and in fuel cells today. This was the first of many important reactions made possible by boranes, compounds of boron and hydrogen.
Boranes, which Brown has called "possibly the most useful intermediates currently available," are now used in the synthesis of many organic compounds, including medications such as the antidepressant Prozac and the cholesterol-lowering drug Lipitor.

OBITUARY
HERBERT C. BROWN DEAD AT AGE 92
Nobel Laureate will be remembered for pioneering work in boron chemistry MITCH JACOBY Herbert C. Brown , the R. B. Wetherill Research Professor Emeritus of chemistry at Purdue University, died on Dec. 19 at the age of 92. Brown will long be remembered for his pioneering work in boron chemistry and for the 1979 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Brown was born in London in 1912 and moved to the U.S. when he was two years old. He began high school at age 12 but dropped out two years later to run the family's hardware store when his father died, according to an interview in "Candid Science" by István Hargittai (World Scientific Publishing, 2000). "I'm afraid I neglected the business and spent a lot of time reading books," Brown recalled for Hargittai. "I enjoyed studying." So Brown's mother arranged for the teenager to return to school and work in the store in the afternoons. Later, he studied chemistry at the University of Chicago and completed a Ph.D. degree there in 1938. From 1943 to 1947, Brown held faculty positions at Wayne State University, Detroit, and then moved to Purdue, where he was appointed professor of chemistry.

Brown PHOTO BY ERNEST CARPENTER Herbert C. Brown , the R. B. Wetherill Research Professor Emeritus of chemistry at Purdue University, died on Dec. 19 at the age of 92. Brown will long be remembered for his pioneering work in boron chemistry and for the 1979 Nobel Prize in Chemistry that honored the accomplishments of his lengthy research career. Later, he studied chemistry at the University of Chicago and completed a Ph.D. degree there in 1938. From 1943 to 1947, Brown held faculty positions at Wayne State University, Detroit, and then moved to Purdue, where he was appointed professor of chemistry. While at the University of Chicago, Brown devised a method for preparing sodium borohydride, NaBH4. This compound was used to generate hydrogen gas for weather balloons during World War II and is used nowadays in some fuel-cell applications. Later, Brown discovered that unsaturated organic molecules can be converted readily to organoboranes through hydroboration reactions. He also investigated chemical effects of steric strain and developed methods to measure the strain quantitatively.
