Clifford G. Shull Wins Physics Nobel Prize

Professor Emeritus of Physics Clifford G. Shull will share this year's Nobel Prize in Physics for his development of neutron scattering techniques to analyze condensed matter. The $930,000 award was announced by the Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm, Sweden on Wednesday. Shull, 79, will share the prize with Bertram N. Brockhouse of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. Shull is the fourth member of the MIT physics faculty to win the prize. "It is very exciting to be honored in this fashion," Shull said. "It's all the more exciting" that it happened over 40 years after the work was done, he said. The neutron scattering techniques developed by Shull and his colleagues are "tools for learning things about materials," Shull said at a press conference on Wednesday. Using these techniques scientists can find "very basic information that determines the physical properties of a material." "In simple terms, Clifford G. Shull has helped answer the question of where atoms Œare,' and Bertram N. Brockhouse the question of what atoms Œdo'," according to the Nobel citation. Shull received "a very, very well deserved prize," said Professor of Physics and Department Chair Ernst J. Moniz.

OSLO, Norway (OTVNewswire) At the Nobel Peace Prize Centennial Symposium here yesterday celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Nobel prize, 100 Nobel laureates have issued a brief but dire warning of the "profound dangers" facing the world. Their statement predicts that our security depends on immediate environmental and social reform. The following is the text of their statement: THE STATEMENT
The most profound danger to world peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust. It cannot be expected, therefore, that in all cases they will be content to await the beneficence of the rich. If then we permit the devastating power of modern weaponry to spread through this combustible human landscape, we invite a conflagration that can engulf both rich and poor. The only hope for the future lies in co-operative international action, legitimized by democracy.

The Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering
Objective The Brockhouse Canada Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering recognizes outstanding Canadian teams of researchers from different disciplines who came together to engage in research drawing on their combined knowledge and skills, and produced a record of excellent achievements in the natural sciences and engineering in the last six years. and collaborative research. Who Is Eligible The research teams nominated for the Brockhouse Canada Prize must have two or more members who are independent researchers, one of whom must hold an NSERC grant. The team must still be working together at the time of nomination. Team members may be from academia, government or industry. NSERC recognizes that teams may change between the time the specific research was conducted and the nomination for the Prize. Nominations in which such changes have occurred will be accepted as long as the core of the team is still intact. Prize The Brockhouse Canada Prize will be accompanied by a research grant of $250,000 for the team.

Tue Oct 14 16:20:08 CDT 2003 Dear Friends and Colleagues; It is with deep regret that I inform you that Prof. Bertram N. Brockhouse passed away yesterday in Hamilton, Ontario. As you know Bert was a heroic figure in the development of neutron scattering as a technique to study materials at a microscopic level. His invention of the triple axis neutron spectrometer and the "constant-Q" technique for inelastic scattering allowed the first detailed determination of the dispersion relations for spin and lattice vibrations in solids. These in turn allowed for a detailed microscopic understanding of the forces present between atoms in materials, and for the nature of atomic motion in solids. He was recognized for these achievements at the highest level, culminating with the 1994 Nobel Prize in Physics, which he shared with Cliff Shull of MIT. Further details on Bert's life can be found at: http://www.physics.mcmaster.ca/people/fs3_people_Brockhouse_BN.html

I received some sad news last night and I thought you would want
to know about it as well.
Cliff Shull died on Saturday 3/31/01, apparently from failing
kidneys. Mike Horne (a friend and colleague from Cliff's lab) told me that he had gotten a call from Bob Shull, one of Cliff's sons, who said that Cliff had kidney problems over the last year or so, but in fact never told anyone, including his children about it. An Obituary (printed below) appeared in the Boston Globe on Tuesday and there should be one in the New York Times today. There will be calling hours at a funeral home in Lexington, Mass. on Thursday (I'm sorry I don't have the address) and a memorial service at MIT on Friday 4/6/01. The contact for the MIT service is Marc
