Percy Williams OC May 19 November 29 ) was a Canadian athlete 1928 Summer Olympics Born in Vancouver, British Columbia , Williams surprised many - himself the most - when he won the Canadian trials and was sent out to the 1928 Olympics in Amsterdam British Empire Games and setting a World Record in . South of the border, the Americans were not happy. They didn't like being beaten by an unknown Canadian and they were determined to show it was a fluke. The Americans arranged a series of indoor track meets and invited Williams. If the Americans were surprised in Amsterdam, they must have been dazed when Williams won 19 of 21 races in the series. There was no doubt, Williams was the best sprinter in the world. A pulled thigh muscle stopped his successes for a while, and he never made a full comeback. At the 1932 Summer Olympics , he was eliminated in the quarter-finals. Subsequently, Williams stopped running and became an insurance agent.

P.W. Bridgman By courtesy of the Harvard University News Service (b. April 21, 1882, Cambridge, Mass., U.S.d. Aug. 20, 1961, Randolph, N.H.), American experimental physicist noted for his studies of materials at high temperatures and pressures. For his work he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1946. solids under pressure (which included the discovery of high-pressure forms of ice), and measurements of the physical properties of solids (such as electrical resistance). As the range of pressures was extended, new and unexpected phenomena appeared; thus he discovered that the electrons in cesium undergo a rearrangement at a certain transition pressure. Although Bridgman did not himself synthesize diamonds, despite repeated attempts, his experimentation led directly to their eventual synthesis by scientists of the General Electric Company in 1955. Many other minerals have been synthesized by the adoption and extension of his techniques; a new school of geology, based on experimental work at high pressures and temperatures, developed from his endeavours.

Bridgman, Percy Williams
US physicist. His research into machinery producing high pressure led in 1955 to the creation of synthetic diamonds by General Electric. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics 1946.
Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he was educated at Harvard, where he spent his entire academic career.
Bridgman's experimental work on static high pressure began in 1908, and because this field of research had not been explored before, he had to invent much of his own equipment; for example, a seal in which the pressure in the gasket always exceeds that in the pressurized fluid. The result is that the closure is self-sealing. His discoveries included new, high-pressure forms of ice.
His technique for synthesizing diamonds was used to synthesize many more minerals and a new school of geology developed, based on experimental work at high pressure and temperature. Because the pressures and temperatures that Bridgman achieved simulated those deep below the ground, his discoveries gave an insight into the geophysical processes that take place within the Earth. His book Physics of High Pressure 1931 still remains a basic work.
