Biographical Information Occupation, Sphere of Activity William Lawrence Bragg was educated at first in Australia at the University of Adelaide, where he took his degree in mathematics with first class honours. He then moved to England where he entered Trinity College, Cambridge as an Allen Scholar, taking first-class honours in the Natural Science Tripos in . In the autumn of that year Bragg began his examination of the von Laue phenomenon and published his first paper on the subject. In he was appointed as fellow and lecturer in Natural Sciences at Trinity College. Later that year he and his father were awarded the Barnard Gold Medal of the U.S. Academy of Sciences, the first of many such honours. From he had been working with his father, Sir William Henry Bragg ( ) in the study of X-ray diffraction, the results of which were published in an abridged version in X-rays and Crystal Structure ). As a consequence of the Braggs' research, the structures of many kinds of crystals were discovered with the aid of the X-ray spectrometer. It was for this work that the Braggs were jointly awarded the Nobel prize for physics in From , during World War I, Bragg served as technical adviser on sound ranging in the map section of British army headquarters in France, calculating the distance of enemy artillerey from the sound of their guns. After the war Bragg succeeded Ernest Rutherford (

  • Pierre and Marie Curie are the first and only husband and wife to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics (in 1903). Marie Curie was also awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911. The Curie's younger daughter, Eve, married American diplomat Henry R. Labouisse. As Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Labouisse received the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1965 on behalf of UNICEF. Marie Curie is only one of two women to ever receive the Nobel Prize in Physics. (The second being Maria Goeppert-Mayer in 1963.) Sir Joseph John (J.J.) Thomson received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1906 and his son, Sir George Paget Thomson, received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1937. Sir William Henry Bragg and his son, Sir William Lawrence Bragg, both received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1915. The Bragg's are the first and only father/son team to have jointly received the Nobel Prize in Physics. William Lawrence Bragg was awarded the Nobel Prize at the age of 25, and as of yet he is still the youngest-ever laureate.

William Henry Bragg
William Henry Bragg was born at Westward, Cumberland, on July 2, 1862. He was educated at Market Harborough Grammar School and afterwards at King William's College, Isle of Man. He studied mathematics at Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1881. He studied physics in the Cavendish Laboratory during part of 1885, and at the end of that year was elected to the Professorship of Mathematics and Physics in the University of Adelaide, South Australia. Subsequently he became Cavendish Professor of Physics at Leeds (1909-1915), then Quain Professor of Physics at University College London (1915-1925), and Fullerian Professor of Chemistry in the Royal Institution. His research interests covered many topics and he was skilled at picking up a subject, almost casually, making an important contribution, then dropping it again. However, the work of Bragg and his son Lawrence in 1913-1914 founded a new branch of science of extreme importance and significance, the analysis of crystal structure by means of X-rays. The use of X-rays as an instrument for the discovery of the way in which crystals are built was entirely due to the Braggs. This was recognized by the award of the Nobel Prize jointly to father and son in 1915.

Japanese physicist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics (1973) in recognition of his pioneering work on electron tunneling in solids. From some deceptively simple experiments published in 1958, he was able to lay bare the tunneling processes in solids, a phenomena which had been clouded by questions for decades. Tunneling is a quantum mechanical effect in which an electron passes through a potential barrier even though classical theory predicted that it could not. Dr. Esaki's discovery led to the creation of the Esaki diode, an important component of solid state physics with practical applications in high-speed circuits found in computers and communications networks. William Halse Rivers Rivers was an English medical psychologist and anthropologist. Rivers, who originally trained as a doctor, did work as a pioneering psychologist in the First World War. This background enabled Rivers to bring a scientific approach to anthropology and to set the trend for anthropologists to go and visit the cultures they are studying rather than stay at home and theorize. River's did his major field work with Torres Strait Australian aborigines and with a hill tribe in Southern India, the Todas. He is known principally for The Todas (1906), a model of precise documentation of a people, and the important

    The theme of discovery
It was a scientific expedition that brought the navigator James Cook to Australia's shores in 1770, an event which led directly to the settlement of the continent in 1788 by Europeans. The newcomers set about establishing a society and an economy, based on their own traditions, in a distinctly unfamiliar environment, linked to their former homeland only by often infrequent and unreliable shipping. Australian scientists and scientists from many other countries continue to collaborate to extend the frontiers of human knowledge in ways that echo the scientific purposes of Cook's first voyage. The Tidbinbilla Deep Space Station near Canberra, for example, tracks the automated spacecraft that explore other planets of our solar system. The Anglo-Australian Telescope at Siding Spring Observatory, New South Wales, measures the motion of neighbouring galaxies using quasars as reference points.

    Bragg, Sir William Henry
