Albert Einstein to Max Born
Translated by Irene Born Newton-John In this letter to his old friend, now at Edinburgh University, Einstein first responds to Born's description of a local physician "who wouldn't hurt a fly, but [states] that no sacrifice is too great [for] the realization of Marxist ideals, not even the destruction of millions of human lives." And then it's back to the old quarrel about quantum mechanics. (See Born's comment below.) Princeton, 15 September 1950 Dear Born, . . . People such as your Bolshevik doctor come by their fantastic attitude as a result of their objection to the harshness, injustice and absurdity of our own social order (escape from reality). If he happened to be living in Russia, no doubt he would be a rebel there as well, only in that case he would take care not to tell you about it. Nevertheless it seems to me that our own people here [in the US] make an even worse job of their foreign policy than the Russians. And the idiotic public can be talked into anything. And they really are very shortsighted, for technological superiority is transitory, and if it comes to an all-out conflict, the decisive factor is sheer numerical superiority. So far, you may not object. But you will probably take the position that a complete description would be useless because there is no mathematical relationship for such a case. I do not say that I am able to disprove this view. But my instinct tells me that a complete formulation of the relationships is tied up with complete description of its factual state. I am convinced of this although, up to now, success is against it. I also believe that the current formulation is true in the same sense as e.g. thermodynamics, i.e. as far as the concepts used are inadequate. I do not expect to convince you, or anybody else. I just want you to understand the way I think.

Albert Einstein to Max Born
Translated by Irene Born Newton-John
Hedi [Born, Max's wife] had sent her play, A Child of America , to Einstein, asking his opinion. Einstein's son-in-law, who had married the eldest of his stepdaughters, Ilse, was the then well-known and respected author and critic, Rudolf Kayser. 4 December 1926 Dear Born, You will have to be a little patient. My son-in-law is certain to read the play, and I will write to you. But the poor man has to economize with his strength, as his heart is in poor condition. I have reminded him again to give an opinion on the play as soon as possible. I liked the beginning of the play very much, and I think its impact will not be lost on him. Quantum mechanics is certainly imposing. But an inner voice tells me that it is not yet the real thing. The theory says a lot, but does not really bring us any closer to the secret of the "Old One." I, at any rate, am convinced that He is not playing at dice. Waves in three-dimensional space whose velocity is regulated by potential energy (for example, rubber bands) . . . I am working very hard at deducing the equations of motion of material points regarded as singularities, given the differential equation of general relativity.

Cowan et al. ( p. 199 ) demonstrate that the fastest hydrogen bond fluctuations in neat liquid water (H2O) occur on a sub-50 femtosecond time scale, resulting in an extremely fast loss of structural memory. This has been revealed by multi-dimensional vibrational spectroscopy of the O-H stretching vibration of water. Nano-Motion Pictures: One goal of ultrafast x-ray structural studies is to image atomic motions in materials in a nondestructive manner. Bargheer et al. ( p. 1771 ) imaged coherent atomic motions in a GaAs/AlGaAs superlattice that were induced by exciting electron-hole pairs in the GaAs subband. This excitation process weakens the bonding in the GaAs layers, which causes them to expand and the AlGaAs layers to contract. From their analysis of the small changes they observed in weak reflections, the authors argue that the layers cycle between expansion and contraction every 3.5 picoseconds and launch coherent acoustic standing waves. 2.) Max Born
Renowned physicist Max Born was born in 1882 in Breslau, Germany. His father, Gustav, was a member of the medical faculty at the local university who made a meager salary. Born's grandfather, however, was a very successful textile industrialist, who owned a number of houses and apartment buildings throughout town. In one of these houses is where Born was raised. Born's mother died when he was four years old and the only memories of his mother that he carried with him throughout his life were second-hand. He had a sister, Kathe and the two of them were raised mostly by servants. The two siblings led a rather shut-life in which their only other companions were there cousins and the servants who raised them. Born was a rather sickly child, but in his own words "We were certainly rather spoilt children." (1) Every summer, Born and his sister traveled to their summer home in the village of Tannhausen, which was near the river Weistritz. The children would spend their summers playing in the large park that surrounded their summer home and riding the many horses in the stable their grandfather owned. Born referred to this summer home as "the really great paradise" of his childhood. (2) Because he suffered from bronchitis, Born began his schooling at home and continued studying at home for his first year. He then attended Wankel's Knabenschule for the next two years. Born went to high school at the Konigliches Konig Wilhelms-Gymnasium. Here the main subjects were Latin and Mathematics. Latin was not a favorite subject of Born's, he later reflected that the subject was taught in an excessive manner, considering the lack of use it would provide him later in life. The mathematics that were taught to him sparked no particular interest, in fact he often found them boring.

Nordau, Max (born Simon Maximilian Suedfeld 1849-1923) Co-founder of the World Zionist Organization, philosopher, writer, orator and physician. Nordau was born in Pest, Hungary, to an Orthodox family, but later abandoned all religious observance and was even accused of being anti-religious. He became a physician, settling in Paris in 1880 and also pursued a career as a journalist, eventually becoming a correspondent for leading newspapers in the western world. He achieved fame as a thinker and social critic with the publication of several works highly critical of society, religion, government, art and literature. His works aroused much controversy and continued to be studied and discussed many years after their first appearance. Among his most famous publications are The Conventional Lies of Our Civilization (1883); Paradoxes (1896); and Degeneration (1895).
