Norman Borlaug: Geneticist
In Mexico Borlaug's team emphasized "production-oriented" research and restricted it to investigations that were "relevant to increasing wheat production." He recalled that "Researches in pursuit of irrelevant academic butterflies were discouraged, both because of the acute shortage of scientific manpower and because of the need to have data and materials available as soon as possible for use in the production program." As Borlaug's experimental plots produced increased yields, his staff distributed the seeds among farmers to help them improve their production. "We never waited for perfection in varieties or methods," he said, "but used the best available each year and modified them as further improvement came to hand." In addition, Borlaug advocated the creation of state supported demonstration projects in farmers' fields. Subsistence farmers were rightfully hesitant to make major changes in their farming practices because the risks and costs too easily could bring failure and even greater hunger. Tradition dies hard among farmers, and Borlaug drew upon his knowledge of the land-grant-college system as an agent of change. He wrote that if a farmer saw an agricultural demonstration on his own farm or his neighbor's farm, he became "the most effective extension agent in the whole countryside."

(34 kbps) The storybook journey of Norman Borlaug’s life turned a page to the American Society of Plant Biologists at its annual meeting August 3. There in Denver he wrote yet another inspirational chapter for all who came to hear. “Don’t be satisfied with mediocrity. Don’t waste the potential talent you inherited from your parents, grandparents and great-grandparents! Reach for the stars. You will not reach the stars – but with some stardust in your hands. You will be surprised at what you can accomplish for yourself, your family, community, state, nation and well-being of all humankind,” Borlaug exhorted. Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and Father of the Green Revolution, Borlaug spoke with experience on star reaching and other astronomical feats in plant science. He is credited with saving more lives than any person who has ever lived.

March 25, 2004 Norman Borlaug He turns 90 today. Most of you have probably never heard of him. Most of you probably have heard of Rachel Carson. Here's the difference between the two: Norman Borlaug likely saved more human lives than any human in history. Rahcel Carson is probably responsible for more human deaths than any human history. Guess which one environmentalists love? Guess which one they loathe? On a related note, Cato releases a paper today on bringing back DDT to erradicate third-world malaria. TrackBack Comments: More than Stalin? Very industrious. Posted by: DougB on March 25, 2004 01:52 PM Right on!! Quite a few years ago The Skeptical Environmentalist discussed the DDT ban with respect to mosquito eradication in the developing world and I'm glad to see Cato reopen this question. Maybe it's time to reprint Lomborg's book. Posted by: Alison Brown on March 25, 2004 01:58 PM There's only one person who can bring back the DDT, and his name rhymes with Break the Cake Woberts.

Norman Borlaug
Yesterday evening, the Competitive Enterprise Institute celebrated its 20th anniversary with a gala dinner in DC. (Congratulations, Fred ! You and your colleagues at CEI do important work.) One of the guest speakers at the dinner was Norman Borlaug , father of the green revolution. It isn’t often that any of us enjoys the privilege of being in the same room with someone who has saved over a billion lives, as Mr. Borlaug has. Relatively few people recognize Mr. Borlaug’s name. Makes me think of the world as a place in which melodramatic loud-mouths thunder to and fro in the foreground while actually doing very little of any value but stealing all of the credit for civilization and its benefits. Meanwhile, in the background, millions upon millions of decent, creative people work diligently at their specialties – welding, waiting tables, writing computer code, performing orthopedic surgery, designing shopping malls, running think-tanks – each contributing to the prosperity of the rest. Some contributions are larger than others – as Dr. Borlaug’s certainly is – but even a contribution as colossal as his is quickly taken for granted, any potential notice of it submerged beneath the swagger and bellicosity of the political classes who pretend to be prosperity's source. How wrong. How arrogant.

Collapse of Economy May Prove Fatal to Food Security
ASHOK B SHARMA / Financial Express (India) 21mar2005
See comments below article please NEW DELHI, MARCH 20 — The father of the Green Revolution, Dr Norman E Borlaug cautioned that the collapse of the economy may prove fatal to food security. He urged the world leaders to prepare themselves to meet such an eventuality. The Nobel laureate said: “Such a situation happened way back in 1929 in the US when the stock market crashed. Collapse of the economy can happen any time any where, if weakness creeps into the system. We need to be vigilant.” He said that it can happen both in developed and developing economies. He also cited the recent financial crisis in Argentina, which took a toll on food security. According to Dr Borlaug food production alone cannot ensure food security. “The problems of food distribution and raising the income of people need to be addressed,” he said. He indicated that he is confident that there is enough food in the world, today, to meet the needs of food security. The problem is about distribution of food to 800 million underfed and low purchasing power of the poor. Asked to comment on the situation of heavy farm subsidies given in developed countries which have depressed global prices affecting the interests of Third World farmers, Dr Borlaug said: “Initially these subsidies were given to small and marginal farmers in Europe. Today rich peasants are cornering large amounts of subsidy. This is the compulsions of a democracy.”

Audrey Seiler found
Audrey Seiler, the missing Wisconsin student I mentioned in an earlier post , has been found alive . It's all over the news right now, just happened a little bit ago, so I don't know details. But when I know them, I'll link them. A happy day for her and her family. Fox News reporters are speculating on the story behind her disappearance. She was attacked and left hurt in early February, returning to consciousness several blocks from where she was attacked, so the question is - is this connected? The Madison police are searching for an armed man right now. UPDATE: The latest on Audrey . I'm curious to know the whole story. Police are saying she was abducted at knifepoint, but she had left her building in the middle of the night without a coat or purse before the abduction. So is the abduction connected to her leaving the building? It's odd behavior itself, and it would be bizarre (although not impossible) for them not to be connected. Then there's the attack and abduction she suffered in early February. That surely can't be a

DR. NORMAN E. BORLAUG, NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNER, TO SPEAK AT UNU ON 1 OCTOBER Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, 1970 Nobel Peace Prize winner, will give the 4th U Thant Distinguished Lecture on Tuesday, 1 October 2002. Dr. Borlaug will discuss his views on "Agriculture and Peace - the Role of Science and Technology in Feeding Humankind in the 21st Century." The lecture will take place from 10:30 a.m. - noon in the U Thant International Conference Hall of the UN House in Tokyo. The U Thant Distinguished Lecture series, co-organized by the United Nations University (UNU) Centre and the UNU Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU/IAS), is a forum through which leading thinkers speak on the role of the United Nations in addressing the challenges facing the world in the twenty-first century. Previous speakers in this lecture series have been Dr. Mahathir Bin Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia; Mr. Thabo Mbeki, President of the Republic of South Africa; and the Honorable William J. Clinton, 42nd President of the United States of America. Dr. Borlaug is known for his innovative work to overcome constraints on wheat production. During his sixteen years in Mexico he developed disease resistant, high-yielding wheat varieties that grow under a variety of climatic conditions. These crop types, along with improved management practices, transformed agricultural production and sparked the "Green Revolution" of the 1960s. The increase in food production assuaged starvation for hundreds of millions of people and, as a result, Dr. Borlaug is credited with saving more lives than any other person in history.

(Doctor of Science)

Norman E. Borlaug In 1970 Dr. Norman E. Borlaug was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his life's work of ending world hunger. He is credited with saving millions of lives. Although a superlative scientist, perhaps his greatest achievement has been to successfully put agricultural research and technologies into practice in order to combat starvation. Born and raised in Cresco, Iowa, Borlaug displayed skills as an athlete - mainly in wrestling - that opened the path for him to attend the University of Minnesota, where he studied to be a forester. After graduating in 1937, he went to work for the U.S. Forest Service before he returned to graduate school at the University of Minnesota and took up the study of plant pathology. He received his Ph.D. in 1942 and went to work as a microbiologist for E.I. Dupont de Nemours until being released from wartime service. In 1944 he joined a pioneering technical assistance program between the Mexican government and the Rockefeller Foundation, where he was a research scientist in charge of wheat improvement. For the next 16 years he worked to improve wheat cultivation in Mexico and helped train a generation of young Mexican scientists.  In Mexico,  Borlaug developed wheat varieties with broad and stable disease-resistance, broad adaptation to growing conditions, and with exceedingly high yield potential. These wheats and improved crop management practices transformed agricultural production in Mexico during the 1940s and 1950s, sparking what today is known as the "Green Revolution."
