He became a director at the Foundation and headed a team of scientists from 17 nations experimenting with improvement of grains. In 1970 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to eradicate hunger and build international prosperity. His “green revolution,” which involves the use of improved wheat seed, new types of higher-yield rice, and more efficient use of fertilizer and water, has provided larger food crops in many of the less-developed countries of the Middle East and Latin America. • "There can be no permanent progress in the battle against hunger until the agencies that fight for increased food production and those that fight for population control unite in a common effort."
    • 1970 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech "It is a sad fact that on this earth at this late date there are still two worlds, "the privileged world" and "the forgotten world". The privileged world consists of the affluent, developed nations, comprising twenty-five to thirty percent of the world population, in which most of the people live in a luxury never before experienced by man outside the Garden of Eden. The forgotten world is made up primarily of the developing nations, where most of the people, comprising more than fifty percent of the total world population, live in poverty, with hunger as a constant companion and fear of famine a continual menace."
      • From his 1970 Nobel Lecture "I now say that the world has the technology – either available or well advanced in the research pipeline – to feed on a sustainable basis a population of 10 billion people. The more pertinent question today is whether farmers and ranchers will be permitted to use this new technology? While the affluent nations can certainly afford to adopt ultra low-risk positions, and pay more for food produced by the so-called “organic” methods, the one billion chronically undernourished people of the low income, food-deficit nations cannot."

http://www.crescoia.com/normanborlaug.html
Norman Borlaug is credited with saving millions of people from starvation in what has been named the Green Revolution. His role as an international leader is due not only to his research in wheat genetics, but also to his unique ability to create and implement programs which shared that knowledge with farmers in underdeveloped countries throughout the world. That work was especially honored in 1970, when Borlaug became the only agricultural scientist ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize. The boyhood home of Dr. Borlaug in Howard County, Iowa, is now being preserved as a living memorial to his life and values. The buildings, landscape and setting will enable young people to personally experience part of the history, community and environment that shaped a world leader, inspiring them to leadership as well. Born and raised in a close-knit northeast Iowa community, Norman Borlaug received his early education in a one-room schoolhouse before attending Cresco High School. From age seven to age nineteen, lie lived and worked on a 106-acre farm west of Protivin, Iowa. He farmed, hunted, fished, explored the creek and woodlots, and grew to manhood immersed in the values of this rural community. Borlaug and his sisters, Palma Behrens of Cedar Fills and Charlotte Culbert of Cresco, eventually came to own this farm. Recently, Borlaug donated his portion of the property to the Norman Borlaug Heritage Foundation, a nonprofit, privately supported organization dedicated to the protection and enhancement of Iowa's natural resources. The Foundation is an education outreach program dedicated to life and legacy of Dr. Norman Borlaug.

Dr. Norman E. Borlaug
Nobel Prize-winning Agricultural Researcher
Presented in 1984 to: Dr. Norman E. Borlaug Dr. Norman Ernest Borlaug joined the Rockefeller Foundation staff in Mexico in 1944 to increase the production and productivity of Mexican wheats. This Iowa native continued as Director of the National Wheat Program in Mexico until the research center, Centro Internacional de Mejoramiento de maiz y Trigo (CIMMYT), was formed in 1965. He continued as Director of Wheat Programs in CIMMYT until he retired in 1979. Dr. Borlaug devoted his energies to improvement of wheat for more than 30 years. He contributed more than any other person to the so-called "Green Revolution." This revolution made it possible to improve living conditions for hundreds of millions of people living in the developing countries. This eminent researcher is a man of ideals, and man of action. His writings reflect not only a fight against rust and weeds, but a strong outcry against bureaucracy and paperwork which interfere with rapid action. By his own admission, he is an impatient man and he does not readily accept the slow changes in the developing world. Yields of crops must increase rapidly, and he realizes that there is no time to waste, considering the magnitude of the problem of feeding the world's population. He has been honored by numerous institutions in the United States, Pakistan, India, Norway, Canada and many other countries. He serves on many boards and advises governments in the developing world on food production.

He received his B.S. in forestry from the University of Minnesota in 1937, his master’s degree in plant pathology in 1939, and his doctorate in 1942 (Nobel, 2004). In 1944 Borlaug moved to Mexico to direct the Cooperative Wheat Research and Production Program. At the time, Mexico was importing much of its grain; the program sought to boost local wheat production. Borlaug spent years crossing wheat varieties and eventually produced high-yield, disease-resistant, widely adaptible dwarf wheat. By 1963 Borlaug’s wheat, growing in 95% of Mexico’s wheat lands, produced a harvest “six times the 1944 level” (COAFES, 2004). Once Mexico’s grain production was self-sufficient, Borlaug began a campaign to ship his wheat to Pakistan and India.
