Jules Bordet was born in Soignies, Belgium, on June 13, 1870. Hewas educated in Brussels where he graduated as Doctor of Medicine in 1892. In 1894 he went to Paris to work at the Pasteur Institute until 1901 when he returned to Belgium to found the Pasteur Institute, Brussels. He has been Director of the Belgian Institute since its inception (honorary since 1940) and Professor of Bacteriology, University of Brussels, since 1907 (honorary since 1935).
Bordet's early studies showed that antimicrobic sera include two active substances, one existing before immunization, known as alexine, and the other a specific antibody created by vaccination: he developed a method of diagnosing microbes by sera. In 1898, he discovered haemolytic sera and showed that the mechanism of their action on foreign blood is similar to that by which an antimicrobic serum acts on microbes and, furthermore, that the reactions of the sera are colloidal in nature. He has contributed much towards the understanding of the formation of coagulin and also anaphylactic poisons. Together with Gengou (in 1906), he cultivated B.pertussis

Biography
He became Doctor of Medicine in and began his work at the Pasteur Institute in Paris in , where, in the laboratory of Elie Metchnikoff, he described phagocytosis of bacteria by white blood cells . In he described hemolysis evoked by exposure of blood serum to foreign blood cells. In , he left Paris to found the Pasteur Institute in Brussels , and made his discovery that the bacteriolytic effect of acquired specific antibody is significantly enhanced in vivo by the presence of innate serum components which he termed alexine (but which are now known as complement ). This mechanism became the basis for complement-fixation testing methods that enabled the development of serological tests for syphilis (specifically, the development of the Wassermann test by August von Wassermann ). The same technique is used today in serologic testing for countless other diseases. With Octave Gengou he isolated Bordetella pertussis in pure culture in and posited it as the cause of whooping cough He became Professor of Bacteriology at the University of Brussels in The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to him in for his discoveries relating to immunity.

Jules Bordet (1870-1961), the Belgian bacteriologist, was awarded the 1919 Nobel Prize for physiology (medicine). He won the prize for his discovery of a bactericidal factor in mammalium blood serum, now known as complement, and for determining that complement binds with antigen-antibody complexes - so-called complement fixation - to produce antibody-caused immunity. This type of reaction became the basis for several diagnostic tests, such as the Wassermann test for syphilis. Bordet also discovered the bacillus that causes whooping cough and developed a vaccine against the disease.

Geriatrie
Dies betrifft v.a.
